  • India’s power sector is racing ahead to meet the country’s immense and rapidly growing electricity demand, Power Minister Raj Kumar Singh, Minister of Power and Minister of New and Renewable Energy, declared at the recent ET Global Business Summit 2024.
Highlighting India’s remarkable growth trajectory, Singh pointed out that “no other economy is expanding as quickly as ours,” with power demand increasing by 9% annually. In the past decade alone, capacity additions have topped 190,000 megawatts (MW).
This growth is set to continue; Singh targeted adding another 136,000MW along with boosting demand by over 20,000MW. Achieving these goals will be crucial for supporting India’s broader economic growth and development objectives. As Singh stressed, “We are evolving, we are changing.”

Modi’s leadership is reflected in selection of his ministers. Each has great calibre and integrity to deliver. Congress rule is filled with corrupt ministers and scandals are testimony of it.

I like his enthusiasm, but he should avoid talking about stock price in a public forum.

Really good discussion. Just a point of feedback to the journalist. Please come prepared with difficult questions and dont be shy to challenge the minister. Makes for more credible and interesting conversations.

Our electricity consumption has increased rapidly but what about the growth in our electricity generation capacity?

The power ministry has done great work on many many fronts. Minister trumpets the success. Has talked in detail in his previous interviews.
His biggest achievement is to make states pay their dues.
The minister wants to talk about the most pressing concern which is adding humungous capacity to what has already been added in the last 10 years.
It is mostly generation but also transmission.
However, the interviewer is very enthused by the recent PSUs' stock performances. Raised it repeatedly Eg. when can the markets expect more PSU privatisations. Wealth funds are eager to partner/invest in PSUs. Ask how has PSUs' profitability grown so fast that it is matching the private sector.
The minister is bubbly. He gives good answers without raising expectations.
He says there is no shortage of funds. All projects receive multiple competitive bids. Says 90% of transmission is done through auction. Auctions are the way to go.
Says the private sector should just invest in generation, as grid access is the best in the world. Allows the firm to trade anywhere in India.
Says the power ministry has simplified rules and brought transparency & certainty. Made dispute resolution simple and prompt so work is being completed.

Gandhi's family and Congress are people-centric parties that believe that half of all Indians should receive free electricity. Also, free bus rides are available for all women.
