    What would subtracting the two x variables divided by 2 (instead of adding as you demonstrated in the video) give you?

      Pick 2 numbers on the number line like 4 and 8. Now add them together and divide that sum by 2: (4 + 8)/2 = 6 (which is the midpoint between 4 and 8). Now subtract 4 from 8 and divide by 2. What do you get? Do it again with the 2 numbers 8 and 10. As you can see there is no recognizable pattern when you subtract, but there is when you add.

    Proof: middle = A + (B - A)/2 = (A + B) /2
