Hello my friend, just stumbled across your channel.... When I see or hear the Subbuteo, I get such grand memories of the love and passion I still have and had for, in my Opinion, The Greatest Ever game made.
Our family have years, decades worth of memories both good and the bad of Mr Adolfs brilliant and unbelievably addictive creation.
These memory's range from very Sore knees, setting up game, trying to find the best Carpet available that would keep the pitch nice and smooth during our game, if of course you weren't lucky enough to have your pitch mounted on a board or table if again you were lucky enough to have a table big enough and a mum that let you!!! Lol. Then of course you had the major issue, during, before, or after the game that your star striker had an injury. Want too upset if the player had injured just a wee ankle tear.. This being you knealt on the player with your knee and the player had been crushed flat, "forwards" but hadn't snapped off the players base. Now, I said forwards as with the players being mounted in the famous Subbuteo stance it wasn't an injury that would mean, writing off to Waddingtons(manufacturer) and your player wouldn't be fit for a month or so (until Waddingtons got off their ass and sent me, well my dad, the new, rested, tested and polished base, replacement). Which then the player you had spent ages looking in the spares box of old teams, knackered pieces, lost and found bits and bobs, for a player that had the correct colour kit on or close too, could then be sent back to youth team, second team, etc etc!!! Lol. right stop rambling Steve, sorry... Right upto the good memories of scoring that late stunner from just in the shooting zone, right up the corner(bit like that Gordon Strachan goal in real life that beat the keeper and went in. There was no question whether it had gone in or not as at the time, most stadiums had the goals that had that semi circle(near enough) up the top corner of each post where the post and cross bar met!! yep scoring the last minute winner against your Dad, Friend, other Family etc etc! and then receiving the Huge, I mean Huge FA Cup, World Cup, League Cup and so on. The cups were that big you near enough could smother your whole team. But to make it a bit more real life for us they had a little set of Royals you could buy, I think it was made to look like the queen holding the trophy in her hands.. SQUEEZE into your stadiums royal box. Only problem was the players with their Huge (ladies, hang on, let me finnish!!) Bases would fit in the box, or the steps and walkways of your Red and Blue(big grandstand) or white/creme(I think the corner sections and stands for behind the goal just one tear as you had to account for the Goalkeepers green rod at the back of the Goal to Operate/use the Keeper) or all green(older stands). I ever ever got one of those and I was so gutted as, if memory serves me well, those stands had a wee tunnel that was for even more realism as you could place your players, subs, police, police horses, camera man figures that came with that really ode Camera tower, lol and of course the figures that were meant to look like subs and reserves warming up which came with your wee set of manager, sitting or standing and a couple of other players sitting with the green tracksuits on. They were also supplied with a plastic, clear Managers bench with Subbuteo printed on top of the bench in green!!!! I'll shut up as I have so much, much more of history to share with folks of Mr Adolfs genius invention!!! Please stay safe all, families too.
