Abandoned Dutchess Center in Poughkeepsie, NY

  • The only store that’s open here is Aaron’s and they don’t look like they are doing much business here in this empty shopping area. The Blockbuster Video closed down probably in 2010 when the original company went defunct. Payless closed in March 2019. I’m not sure when all the other stores closed down but that ShopRite looked like it closed down like 10-15 years ago. There isn’t a lot of info about the Dutchess Center online, that’s all I can give you really lol

I used to work at that Blockbuster! So weird to see people exploring this as abandoned now! I wish y’all could have gone inside lol would have been dope and eerie to see inside now. I used to go get lunch at that Chinese buffet too. The one across the parking lot used to be a Walgreens (or maybe a Rite Aid, I forget, it’s been so long!) There was also a mega Kmart there but that was the most recent store to close, and there was also an furniture rental store next to Payless as well. So weird this whole plaza is just sitting there empty now.

The one thing I didn't do was go at the back of the Blockbuster, the door could have been open in the back. Plus the other stores there too. I'm guessing Habitat for Humanity took over Walgreens or Rite Aid over there at some point and then they closed down. I filmed the Kmart there in a separate video if you wanna see that, it's in my collection. Aaron's is the only current store that is open there right now and I don't know how much longer they are gonna be open in that location, they might move to a better spot. It's depressing to see a shopping plaza that once used to be thriving a long time ago now just a shell of its former self.

As a kid in the 80's I remember when the Blockbuster used to be an actual movie theatre. It was called Dutchess Cinema. I remember going to the blockbuster in the late 90's thinking: "wow, this used to be a movie theater but now thanks to progress we have a Blockbuster! Can't get much more advanced that renting DVD's" little did I know.

Great video......That shopping center was hopping back in the day. I remember as a kid when the abandoned Kmart was Grants department store and shop rite was always packed. I used to get my haircut at Raffael’s barber shop there and Leeds department store was down from there and then Walgreens was there. Payless shoes used to be Shoe-Town and Buffet 2000 was originally Dragon Lady Chinese restaurant. Cero Italian restaurant was next to blockbuster which originally was the Dutchess Cinema. I hope they tear down that whole plaza and put in a super Walmart which that area could use. Behind the old Kmart is an an abandoned garden center/nursery as well. What a shame that area of the Town of Poughkeepsie has become.

I’d rather see something else go there instead of a Walmart. No offense but I hate that store lol. I used to work in one and they treat their employees like crap. And besides, they are one of the reasons a lot of these department stores like Kmart and others are not open anymore.

You guys might not know but the Blockbuster was originally a movie theater called the Dutchess Cinema! I was a little kid when I saw The Omen and Jaws there back in the mid 70s! And the liquor store next door was a Chinese Restaurant, I can't remember the name, but it was a very good one. And we shopped in that Shop Rite, it was the biggest market at one time in the area. We drove there from Pleasant Valley where we lived. And of course Carrolls Burgers, long out of business that I remember as a very young boy in the early 70s, was at the entrance of the Dutchess Center, then it became some other fast food stores over the years.

Oh wow, this place had some history to it. It’s sad that almost nothing is open there, different times now

It definitely needs to be demolished and rebuilt, like South Hills mall.
