  • Barnsley Archives have allowed Dave Cherry, the Barnsley film documentarian, to show and discuss an archive cine film belonging to them. The film was donated to them by someone unknown. It is a remarkable insight into the towns, vibrant, outdoor market of fifty years ago. Using modern computer imagery Dave and Wayne Sleight speak about life in a bygone age.

Thanks for putting this up Dave. That lady at 16.33 is my Grandma. She had a heart of gold and would always ask my Grandad for a Park Drive. They lived in Sheffield but used to stand Barnsley markets on Wednesdays. Sadly they passed away in mid 80's. Brought tears to my eyes seeing her again. I'm now in my mid 70's.

Hi! Just found this video. My grandma used to have the hairdresser's next door to Gordon Denton on Agnes Road. Great memories!

As my cousin mentioned above, the lady with the cigarette was our grandmother, May Needham. Their stall was next to Herbert Warner, who's stall appeared twice, at the beginning with the gold bought sign, and with the Leeds United picture. He was a big fan and actually had the FA cup on his stall when Leeds won it in 1972. We have a picture of our mam holding it. My mam and uncle had a material stall opposite Roseby's. Roseby's, or at least the name, became a nationwide business, of warehouses, before going out of business a few years ago. My brother and I would come with mam, in the school holidays, and go to the pictures at the Odeon. Happy days, and great to see my grandma again. Thanks.

My aunty worked for Joe for a few years, nice bloke, this was when he was on the indoor market too. My Aunty Frances worked on Joes fashion stall in the upstairs market for years, she had red hair, and you would see her sat at the front of the stall doing her knitting in between serving customers.

What get's me is the listing of buildings started in 1947 with the Town and Country Planning Act, why weren't so many of Barnsley's old buildings listed? I'm 7:16 into the film, and I could honestly cry that these old buildings were ripped down for the concrete monstrosity of the Metropolitan Centre and new market.

you're right Carol-criminal damage to heritage buildings-have just passed the new market bridge-the old Ceag building was a lovely avante guard building there and what will happen to the old M and S in town which is moving to a glass and tin out of town place-ta for your interest

@@DaveCherry Oh I'm absolutely fascinated in old Barnsley history. I'm currently researching my family tree, and so many of my family lived around the area where Morrisons is now and Heelis Street (which isn't really a street anymore), Thomas Street, Princess Street and I've just found out my 3x granduncle had the Musical Tavern on Shambles Street for years, his name was Joshua Wilkinson. So if you've got any information about the pub I'd love to hear it.
