I'm 16 rn so I don't remember Barnsley being like this at all but I can tell u something I'd rather Barnsley be the way it is on the video now than what it is today - Adam Steven Robinson
it's worse since they've finished the Glassworks and that ridiculous footbridge that no one asked for, it all looks sterile now. i know the Metropolitan Centre was a concrete relic of the 70s, but at least it had character
Great video im from wakefield my mums from barnsley i remember going to barnsley market when i was about 5 ( we moved when i was 6 ). As for the below comments i agree that the council have taken barnsley from a individual nice looking town into a industrial town just like any other.
amazing video my nan loved this as she grew up in Barnsley i was wondering if by any change i could use some off this footage in my college documentary about life growing up in Barnsley
I was a member of Barnsley Cine Club in the 1950s/60s and remember Tony Harrison and Brian Haigh very well. I know Tony is no longer with us, but what about Brain. Anybody got any news of him? Bill Edgar.
HAHA i love the music at the begining lolll most of my dads family are in barnsley lol id love to go to england one day =] yorkshire accents are the best haha x]
I wonder if Barnsley had as many drunken slappers back then? I don't live in Barnsley, it's just that I used to work in a pub in Blackpool and had the pleasure of 'serving' many a refined and demure Barnsley lass over the years.
1. I'm not trying to make you look stupid 2. Lol you seem to think I work or have worked for the council. 3. Everything in my previous comment is true - Unemployment has been brought down in Barnsley due in part to new business moving into new unoccupied buildings. Education has been improved through the new college sites. Housing has been /will be made slightly more affordable by the new apartment buildings.
Define and identify "pretentious buildings"... if buildings like the new council offices, the new college site, the capital business park at dodworth, the new transport interchange, the ongoing development of the Manvers area and the series of new apartment buildings currently being built bring down unemployment, provide a better education resource, attract commercial business thereby resulting in more job opportunities and stimulate the local economy...well I call that progress not pretence!
4. Sorry it's not regurgitated tripe it's fact and I can back it up with sources and figures. 5. I think your a bit paranoid and afraid of change....nothing personal :P 6. I'm also guessing you used to work for the council but you got sacked and are now bitter about it? Near the mark? 7. In your opinion WHY do the council want to improve the town's image?
just wanting to say... wht ur saying is right, but only applies to the majority..alot of people i know tho, understand barnsleys gone to shit. personally im getting the fuck outta here after colledge

Many thanks for this - it's all very interesting even if the commentary is dreadful. Dorothy Hyman looking at cups indeed.

Sounds remarkably like David Dickinson but I don't think he has any connection with Barnsley, does he ?

“One of the finest bus services in the country,” maybe. But a crap 💩 bus station. The drivers used to have to reverse out of the station.
