one of my favorite jokes in this game is how the narrator *always* says that it would be doing the princess a favor because of how rough the staircase is. so good
The game got an update recently and it added a Chapter 3 where the cabin is so nice that he gives up halfway through saying that line because he knows it’s not believable lol
Honestly the "good" ending of slaying the princess then yourself in chapter one actually has a surprising amount of weight behind it if it's your first run, because even you, the player, aren't aware of the looping mechanic yet. It really reads as a route that's just going to end because you did something wrong.
Something I hadn’t really considered before but realized watching this is the Princess becomes more self aware in some paths and knows the cold is her greater self and some she doesn’t. Of note, in the wholesome endings where she’s happy at the prospect of being the princess and you leave the cabin with her she doesn’t understand what’s going on. This mirrors the ending where you both choose to leave the cabin together as people and not as gods. I think that’s really sweet.
I’ve been trying to re-find this playthrough for ages. I just vividly remembered someone saying “What? Nooo” right before the princess says “What? Nooo” and that I laughed about it for two minutes straight awesome video my dude~
I think the comparison with the Stanley Parable is only a surface level thing. Sure they have the same concept of being able to defy the narrator and they’re trying to railway you into doing what they want but the way both of them feels completely different to me. Stanley’s narrator is for a commentary on a railway narrative in a medium that can let you make your own decisions while STP’s narrator is seemingly the theme of wanting to keep things the same for the sake of having things being done the way they should be done and to defy change. One is commentary, one is a narrative device. But what do I know? I can barely parse my own thoughts on the game and its narrative themes
Great edit as always, really appreciate you doing these! For this game though, I wish chat would have been moved since it covers the princess' dialogue quite often. Maybe it could have been in the bottom left corner instead or just a little smaller/less opaque?
Opacity doesn't work too well with blending chat and the background without sacrificing a lot of readability. I thought about rewriting her dialogue but because they are all voiced and I planned to do a chatless render, keeping chat at eye-level avoids the time sink.
Thank you so much for telling what references there are, like I wouldn't get the Alan Wake 1 Stream 2 ref at 1:37:45. As an occasional VOD binger, helps a lot.
Ohhh I really want to watch the stream, but for the first time in a Joseph Anderson video I haven’t played the game he’s playing/discussing and actually want to play it. It’s reminds me of the Stanley Parable but in a visual novel format, it’s got to be great.
I wonder if he'd count it as an anime game, since it's just the art style that's anime Also, has class of 09 gameplay been popping up a lot in everyone else's youtube feeds all of a sudden?
This shit was great. The voice in your head is the only thing keeping me entertained while the princess gives me the story to keep me intrigued. The drawings really set the mood too

It’s kind of wild how the princess VA is constantly praised by people but the hero voice, the voice of ALL the male voices seems not to get brought up anywhere close to as much for being so incredible with his range I guess waifus stay winning
Do we live in alternative realities or something? The male VA gets praised all the time, even got nominated for his performance. I only ever saw anyone praising the Princess' VA twice: one of them was in this video (the streamer saying "they both did a really good job") and the other was a random comment where the person explicitly stated that they wrote it, because only the male VA was getting praised and nobody was talking about the female VA's work. Even the reviewer at the end of the video applauses how good the male VA is and says they dislike the female VA's performance. Not trying to say one person did a good job and the other bad, because I love the work of both voice actors in this game, but wanted to point out that the male VA gets praised a lot more and it's wild to claim it's the opposite
Sorry for the late comment, but there's a lot of routes and endings this video (and the stream) hasn't covered, so you can still play the game if you want to (and also that's what I did). Even the routes shown in this video can have different voices and thus different choices and interactions
Well most people miss this one line that makes the narrator’s motivations sound more reasonable: Player: “If I destroy her how is that existence any better than death? Or even different from death at all? Honestly it feels worse” Narrator: “When I broke the cycle, I made sure the tear was rough. You carry a part of what should be her, and she carries a part of what should be you. Things won’t be as they are now, but they won’t be nothing, either. Besides… anything is better than oblivion. Rip missed the ending that lets you smooch the princess. Spoilers: Its Act 2 Witch into Act 3 Thorn. You betray her, then she betrays you, then both of you learn to trust each other and smooch. Edit: Saw the bonus at the end. Noice.
This game seems really well made, but unfortunlatley I feel like the ending got really really pretentious. Kind of a weird turn it decided to take but I gotta respect it for taking such big risks.
Bit late to the comment, but Joe kinda got the submission ending because he assumed everything the princess said was true and capitulated. Remember, she's only 1 half and her perspective is not absolute. I think her line about dictating to you from atop the throne of truth is meant to stress that point. SPOILER FOR OTHER ENDINGS: You can challenge her and with the help of the Hero get past all her godly layers and meet her mortal aspect to talk things out or end her for good. You can either choose to both relinquish your divinity and leave the cabin as mortals, slay her to create a new universe without death, or wipe your memory to reset the loops all over again.
That’s because he got the ending where he agreed with the shifting mound and missed the (much better imo) ending scene where the voice of the hero returns.
