We're planning our first extended overland trip this summer. This video is incredibly helpful! You're right - the most uncomfortable piece of this for us is figuring out where we'll spend our nights, so this was very timely. Thanks!
Great video! I've been a "casual" user of Gaia and I've followed similar principles for searching trails; however, finding campsites is very cool (didn't think of using it to this extent). Thanks for the tutorial Matt.
Matt, at always very informative. I love Gaia GPS, have been using it for years.. and when they released the Overland layer that 100% became my base map. Doing aerial (SAT GPS) recon is so easy with the tools today. makes trip planing a breeze... hope one day to run into you on the trails!
I must say that was perfect!! Really liked how utilizing the separate maps to see where possible sites would be and look like. Thank you!! Cheers!! J & C
Matt, thanks for the info. I guess great minds think alike as this is pretty much my workflow as well. :) One tip I can add is that while you are looking at the google maps, if you hold down the Command key (Control key on a PC) and then move your cursor, you will be able to tilt the map into 3D mode and actually see the view from that spot, if it is a hill. For example, on that fire tower you found, I was able to see the view from that hill which to me is also some great info to have. Hope you have a great time on your upcoming overland trip.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures It woks in Google maps for sure on a mac. Perhaps I am gettign the keystroke wrong as I am on a mac and not a PC. Maybe try option key?
Can’t wait to see more from your New Mexico journey. I will be hitting that area going to Las Cruces from Phoenix. Let me know if you are heading west from there. We are hitting the best time to hit the Arizona trails!
Thanks for your videos! New sub and new to Overlanding. We just picked up a slightly modded 5th gen 4runner as a family vehicle. We have been wanting to do a trip from MO to out West and hit as many National Parks as possible, may even go all the way to Oregon coast. Wanting it to be all about back roads, trails and dispersed camping. Will be building and overland camper for this kind of journey. Really appreciate the videos and info people like you produce! Thanks and God Bless!
I must have watched this on Patreon last week. I just went on a five day adventure and found a couple of great campsites just as you explained (Gaia, google earth, and TH-cam). One was on an island in the middle of a river, another was at the entrance of a cave/overhang beside a river, and another was next to the Rio Grande where I saw 4 black bears on the Mexico side (Black Gap Wilderness Mgmt area - like Big Bend but zero pavement, electricity, or connectivity) I saw maybe 2 cars the whole time I was there. Epic site. I’ll never camp at Big Bend again.
off topic, I enjoyed your overlanding videos and I am planning to do the same adventures as well. Is there a video about the safety for cooking at campsite, more specifically against the wild animals? if not, can you make video about it? I learned a lot from your contents. Thank you. Keep those video coming.
Hi again Matt. Lots to learn, and you’re a great teacher. I have an issue using my smartphone in another country - roaming charges. They’ve gone through the roof, so much so I’m looking for alternatives. I’m new to GaiaGPS, and there are offline maps, but is there something else NOT relying on an app? How about a Garmin unit, like the Montana 700i series that has inReach built in? I wonder if it could be used along side Gaia? I don’t have that model of Garmin, and I’ve only used Gaia a very little bit, so that’s why I’m asking…
Great, informative video, thanks so much. Not something you would necessarily know if you’re not from the Southwest, but just a little heads-up, the “G” in Gila is pronounced like an “h”. So you pronounce it like “hee-la”. At least that’s how we pronounce it in Arizona, so I’m assuming NM would be the same. Hope you have/are having a great trip, look forward to seeing the vids.
Would you then organize the waypoints by folder? I struggle with the best way to carry all this pre-planning information (possible this, maybe that, etc) into my iPad that doesn't clutter the display when I'm not looking for waypoints, crowd sourced routes, etc. If you would do a follow-on vid on the organization of all this data for effective on-trail use that would be a good complement to this vid. Cheers! -- ,\\
After you have marked your route and possible camp sites, do you then download it? How do you access it all when you are out on the trail with no internet/wifi, etc?
When you open Gaia on your phone or ipad, it will sync with your account and automatically download anything you created on the desktop version. Just be sure to open and sync it before you are out of Cell coverage or wifi. Then you will have your data..

That keystroke didn't work on Google Maps. Maybe it's just a Google Earth thing?

Thank you for the very valuable information

That sounds incredible!!! I'll have to check out that Black Gap Wilderness Area.
Google Earth is great to use for the 3D feature. You can really manipulate it to see many angles.

the only wild animal I've ever had an issue with when it comes to food is racoons. LOL.
Great Video Matt!! Thanks 👍🏻
Glad you liked it!
Thanks Mat. Great info

Awesome good stuff
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the insight, tips and methods for trip/route planning, very informative!
Come do the China Dam loop if you stop by the Phoenix area
Good stuff. FYI Gila is pronounced hee-la
Loved watching your workflow!!
Very interesting.
Will you be putting on a class at MOORE?
if so. What do I need to bring to class?
Yes I will be teaching at MOORE. See you there. Just bring you and the app.
Any of ya'll around El paso Texas area? I plan on going out around September for a week long adventure
Im in Austin.
I’m going on a two nights camping “overlanding” to the oazarks for Labor Day weekend.

What Chasing Dreams said.
@@ChasingDreamsLivingLife thank you! 😊
What are the two websites you use to find sites?
Matt, I love ya buddy but Gila is pronounced with an H, not a G. It’s Hee-luh, not Gee-luh.
I know I know. LOL
What do you need to look for in a laptop to use for planning an overland route. I am looking to purchase a laptop for planning routes
Any laptop that can handle the internet should be fine.
That is so cool that you're a patron yourself!!
Thanks! We support 6 different youtubers.
Gila is pronounced Hila. :-)
Thanks!
No problem!
