  • Here is my reaction to IU Eight feat. Suga. This was my first time listening to Kpop outside of BTS and wasn't what I expected at all. I feel like I got hit in the gut with all the emotion behind the lyrics. I really liked IU and definitely want to check out more.

this song was definitely dedicated to close friends that she's lost. In the last few years she's lost 3 close friends to suicide, because of the unnecessary hate and pressure they received from the public.
The lizard that turns into a dragon in the video represents one of those friends named Jonghyun, who was a part of the group Shinee, and sadly passed away a few years ago. He was also really close with Taehyung, and many people mourned his death. People say he was represented this way because he was known for being a huge fan of the pokemon charmander. The girl in white who ends up on the back of the dragon is speculated to represent the 2 other people she lost, Sulli and Goo hara, who were lost last year because of the amount of hate they received from the public. IU is most likely the girl in the plane, who cries while smiling while looking out the window seeing how happy they are in the afterlife, and her tear in the real life counterpart could represent that she's found some sort of closure.
Overall a really good song, IU and Suga were said to have both contributed a lot to the production, finding themselves to work really well together because they had a lot in common.

Thank you for this information. I had heard about those deaths when I watched a video to better understand UGH! by BTS, but I didn’t know that IU was friends with any of the people who passed. That must have been devastating for her. I hope that she has been able to start healing from those loses.

You were spot on with lyrics!
IU's close friends Jonghuyn from Shinee and Sulli from a Girl group F(x) passed away, sadly they took their own lifes. Many fans think this song dedicated to them. 💔

Thank you. I had heard about the deaths in Kpop last year when I watch a video to better understand UGH! from BTS. It didn’t mention IU at all so I hadn’t realized that she was friends with any of the idols who passed. It’s very tragic and I hope that IU is able to find a way to heal from their loss.

IU has been in the industry since she was 15. She's a singer, songwriter, and actress. She's highly respected in South Korea. I know you mentioned only really listening to BTS, but I highly suggest checking out her other songs. She's not afraid to try different genres but her music overall is known to have a "healing" quality to it. I suggest checking out Blueming, Bbi Bbi, Palette, 23, Red Shoes, Ending Scene, and Through the Night to start. But she has tons of music!

Kudos to you for being so perceptive and emphatic when listening to this song. IU is not only a singer and music producer, but also a well respected lyricist in Korea. Her original songs almost always carry specific message for the audience. One theory is that the moments of IU in and around the house are her memories and the animation could represent the the imaginary world of those lost. While suffering from the pain of loss, our mind would create an alternate, happy ending for those we miss. That's the duality of the memory.

@@RoziReacts Her last few title tracks and singles are pretty upbeat:
      Twenty-three
      Palette
      Bbibbi
      Blueming
If you want slower, more emotional songs, then:
      Through The Night
      Ending Scene
Shs also writes her own lyrics, and is a fantastic lyricist, a lot of her songs are pretty meaningful (especially the first three I suggested) so you'll want to have captions on when watching 😊

Her real name is Lee Ji-Eun and her stage name is IU. She is a soloist. She writes most of her songs and always puts a message in her songs. She has been in the industry for like i think 12 years now. This song is about her loosing her memories and she is downloading all of her memories happy and sad one. There are some theory that this song is about her 3 friend that passed away months ago. Her friends are also in the K-pop industry. The song is called EIGHT because she wants to express her self as an 28 years old woman. This song is a continuing song from 23 and Palette. 23 is about her being 23 years old and Palette is about her being 25 years old. She sometimes also write for other singers too. She also have a channel called IU official and Edam Entertaiment. And this english lyrics are kinda wrong.
    Suggestions:
You And I and Above The Time ( watch it together because there is a continuing story )
    Bbi Bbi
    Blueming
    Through The Night
    Good Day
    23
    Palette

I cried as soon as the background singers came on because I understood what IU was doing and it was very touching. IU is always doing something for unknown singers to help them be heard and she is the only artist I know who does that a lot. You should also check out the song called "The Meaning of You" from her Flower Book Mark album, it's a very nice song also. Actually the entire album is great so check out all the songs from this album since many songs are a remake from the old songs by varies singers.

I'm actually quite amazed by hlw you got the main idea so accurately without the context (her having lost close friends in these past few years) now this explanation is ofc not an official one but it's what most fans relate the lyrics and the symbolism in the mv to.
IU is a, if not the, biggest artist of this generation in korea (with bts and other groups and artists too ofc) she isn't that much known to international kpop fans but yea she is huge and a respected senior to many new gen idols including bts.
    some background info on her:
she debuted in 2008 when she was 15 years old and she is a soloist so she has been in the business for a very long time and has been through some very hard stuff at this young age but she came out of this journey as a legend honestly.
eight is actually a part of her "age series" in which the songs are connected to the way she perceives life etc. at that current age.
the first part of the series was twenty-three in 2015 (23 years old) and then palette in 2017 (25 years old) and now eight (28 years old).
I recommend watching them as IU takes us on quite a journey of her thoughts and mentality changing throughout the years.. it's beautiful but with the addition of eight also heartbreaking and bittersweet in a sense.
she has been producing, writing all of her songs herself ever since her chatshire album (with twenty-three as it's title track) in 2015 so her messages are quite personal so if you are interested, her side tracks in her albums are amazing and give more insight into her thoughts and her artistry

    • @RoziReacts
      @RoziReacts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

to add on what another comment said i think the theory about it being about her friends is more correct than not. especially since bts released ugh and yoongi (suga) participated in both songs production and lyrics. and we know bts refer to the hate artists actors and public figures recieve. im glad that suga participated in ius song and i hope shes found a friendship with bts or other people. i know many fans and non fans were worried about her how shes handling everything etc.

I’ve been watching reactions since this dropped and have cried during all of them, regardless if the reactor grasped the real meaning of this song and video, and I watched yours this morning while drinking my morning coffee and cried with you, like “yes, feel those feelings, let it out I’m right here with you” you weren’t aware of it but we had a moment together lol. It really hits hard for anyone who had experienced loss, and I’m so grateful you felt comfortable enough posting this even though you don’t often get emotional during reactions :) thank you for being so sweet to IU, she’s been my favorite artist for years. She’s kind of a chart bully and digital monster when her songs drop and Korea’s favorite, even though she gets a lot of hate and scrutiny from the korean public. The sci-fi device featured in the first scene of this video is for downloading personal memory to an external memory device. So she finally stores all her memories on a computer device in which her memories will be preserved forever. This song is very sad and very beautiful. I can't stop crying after watching this video. This work is comparable to Morzart's works in which beautiful melodies are always tinged with deep seated sorrow. In my opinion, this IU and BTS's work, "Eight" is more than just music video. It is a profound quest for humanity's single, the most universal and fundamental question.

yes, this song is dedicated to her friends whom due to unfortunate events, arent in the world anymore. all three committed suicide. when her good friend sulli died, she's devastated. but whats more sad is that her other friend(hara) committed suicide weeks after sulli's death. hara, sulli, and iu are all great friends. hara have depression way before sulli died. so u could guess its the last straw for her.
iu was performing at a concert that day. she's halfway through the concert when she heard of her second friend's(hara's) passing. let me tell you, the next song she sung absolutely broke my heart.

In 2012 IU wrote a cute little song named 'peach' that was a love song to her friend Sulli. In this MV, when the house scenes started there was a bright peach colored light. The happy woman in those memories was dressed in a style Sulli dressed in, quite unlike IU. And the girl in the second animation didn't resemble IU, it resembled Sulli.

I like how you try your best to understand the lyrics rather than just listening to the melody since IU is known to put a lot of efforts to her lyrics.
For the MV, I think you got the most of it right. I believe the red button in the beginning is the recording button for the memories, and the orange screen asks back "Are you going to save all your memories?" Then she chooses "yes." So, the device is basically memory saving device.
Lizard represents that 'someone' she lost without saying farewell, and all the moments with it would be the happy memories with that someone. IU in the dress would be IU after she lost that someone, looking back in the past, remembering good times with that someone. That is why IU in the airplane, IU in the dress, and futuristic IU are bursting in tears looking outside the wet window. (looking back in the happy memories) Turbulence and the rain could mean the incident that took away that someone/lizard. IU in the end slightly smiling then quickly fades to sadness would also be the mixed emotions from recording her memories.
Of course, this is not official, just one of the theories from IU's Fandom that I found persuasive.

    • @RoziReacts
      @RoziReacts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s pretty interesting. I think there was writing on the orange screen. Is that what it actually said? Asking if she wanted to save her memories? That’s such an interesting concept for a music video. I’m going to have to watch it again. I only have BTS and now IU as a reference, but Korean MVs are just so much better than American ones.

i'm Vietnamese, and i'm a huge fan of IU over 7 years. She is regarded as NATIONAL MUSICAL TREASURE of Korea. She composed many songs that touch to many heart of listeners, "Dear name" is one of her song i extremely love, this song recalls again images of a biggest real accident in Korea happening in 2014, she wrote it to show her love to ill-fated victims. I cried listening to it. "Love Poem" is also so great. "Bbibbi" is song for all the haters and the sasaeng who try to invade her private life. The lyrics are so metaphorical. Her every song is a meaningful story. Although she is young, she's highly respected in South Korea and junior and senior artists by her talent

Just wanna say something about you saying this is the first time checking out anything in kpop outside of BTS. I was once like that, I had tried getting into kpop YEARS ago, but the two songs I checked out I wasnt into (still not into them today). Fast forward a few years and someone was talking to me about kpop, I was being close minded based on past experience, she recommended blackpink to me. I gave them a shot and was instantly hooked, after listening to their songs, and watching all of their variety appearances they had at that time a few years ago, I just kind of stuck to the few songs they had. I wasn't interested in trying other groups because I knew from trying others in the past I wasn't into them. But one day I decided to go through a kind of kpop time machine, exploring music from way back at the beginning of kpop in the early 90s, to newer stuff. At first there was a lot I wasn't into, but as I started to hear more I began picking up on things that they do different in kpop compared to other types of music. Song styles, mv styles, whatever else and I began to appreciate it much more beyond just the song I was hearing. Because when it all comes together, even the most cheesy type of mv/song is really great when everything is put together. Eventually I discovered IU through all of this and besides probably being the best person on earth with everything she does with donations etc, her music truly is top tier. It's worth it to give other artists a chance, because even if you dont like a majority of what you find, theres def the chance of finding something else you love as well.

    • @RoziReacts
      @RoziReacts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I definitely agree on that. It’s not so much that I was reluctant to try anything else, it more that since I only started reacting to BTS a few months ago and they have so much content, I was (and still am) very much in the rabbit hole. I typically like trying new things and I usually give things a couple of tries before officially deciding if I like/dislike it. I figure that I may not like the first song I hear from a particular artist, but that doesn’t necessarily represent their whole discography so I should give them another chance. :-)
Oh yeah, and just from what I’ve seen from BTS and the couple of reactions I’ve done to IU, KPOP really is something special. The amount of detail that goes into everything is amazing.

As i heard this that girl in a white dress is sulli and she's running from this cruel world then she jumps and the lizard catch her wich means that lizard is Jonghyun and the girl in the plane is iu who is crying out of joy seeing her friends flying together but the song could it be maybe and about herself that she was depressed before or something like that I'm not really sure but for my opinion i think this song was made for Sulli and Jonghyun the way the lyrics perfectly fits them soo

IU has been around from 2008 (child singer) but the same age as Min Yoongi, she is great at what she does and the biggest rival for BTS for the end of the year awards, she is really great, I personally love BBIBBi th-cam.com/video/nM0xDI5R50E/w-d-xo.html but she has so much more wiki bio en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IU_(singer)
Min Yoongi has been either doing production for other singers and or being in the song it self can't pick my favorite but both Song Request and We Don't Together was both up for and award last year for the same award a few times en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suga_(rapper) and of course is first mixtape with for half of it you will need tissues
RM has also colabled a few in recent years (a lot) favorite from last year is Younha Winter Flower th-cam.com/video/OcCkAG_LO9Y/w-d-xo.html and he has a mixtape and a playlist also , Hoseok hasn't done much other than is mixtape and Chicken Noodle Soup with Becky G but we are hoping for more as he is also very talented too.

Its funny because you said "I've never hear kpop except BTS..., and now I start to listen to IU" XD
    :D
maybe its just a problem in nomenclature, but actually in Korea kpop is just a part of kmusic. Kpop = idol music, and that kind of music (mostly) loved by teenagers and some ppl in early 20's. There are some other scenes like rap/hiphop/RnB, ballads, indie, folks, trot, rock, and jazz. That doesnt means kpop is not popular, yes its popular but its not crazily loved by people/general public. Koreans especially love their ballads :D and that's when we talk about IU .... :)
I think IU is more like k-music singer, as her music now dominantly is ballads and even folks. And BTS, I think they have embarked from KPOP term, maybe they have created a new genre?! :D
