This is still one of his best movies. My personal favorite is the Darjeeling Limited, but while that film really speaks to me for a lot of reasons, I still think overall, this film is one of his best in general.
Love the touch of the movie opening with Hey Jude: the song Paul famously wrote after Johns son, Julian, during his own family trauma as John left for Yoko
@@Awhmanitsdanttv definitely Darjeeling Limited is his most underrated. The Royal Tenenbaums is probably Wes's best and definitely gets the praise it deserves. But Darjeeling Limited is a fantastic movie that rarely gets any props.
This is hands down my favorite Wes Anderson film, something about it hits me so deeply I can’t describe it. I feel so much happiness and sadness by the end of the movie. It’s almost like a window into a life I’ll never live but one I always wanted to have. Gene Hackman is also so good at playing a jerk you just can’t help but like his character, almost like Chuck from BCS but with more chicanery.
Still my favorite of his. His style is there but there's a sense of melancholy to this one that I just love. Plus it's a little more grounded than a lot of his other material.
@@tornoutlaw Agreed this one hits a sweet spot. I put it tops for me with Moonrise Kingdom right behind, though that one leans more heavily on the whimsy.
Fantastic Mr fox will always be my favourite Wes Anderson film, but I think the Royal Tenenbaums could be his best. It's the perfect example of who he is as an artist, emotionally and thematically and aesthetically. The cast is so vast and yet it feels so intimate, every character is balanced well into overarching narrative and they're all really well defined and developed individually. This one, along with Darjeeling limited perhaps, is definitely Wes' most emotional film too. I wish his more recent films could feel this heavy and vulnerable - Richie's suicide attempt is haunting.
Absolutely, just watched it for the first time recently and it's insanely charming. All his films are, really, but there's something even more endearing about his lower budget, simpler early work. Funny as hell too.
This is my second fav Wes Anderson (with Fantastic Mr. Fox as number one)! It has so much heart, the direction is brilliant, the cast portrays their characters perfectly (and those characters are incredibly well written), and it is genuinely so funny! So excited to see you react to this one!
Super pumped to see you go back to Wes Anderson. Royal Tenenbaums is on my top 5 list for sure. Its a depressingly fun story with unique camera work and an absolute incredible soundtrack. Commending before you finish it, but I hope you enjoy it Brandon. Thanks for sharing your reaction!
One of my favorite movies ever, it's my overall Wes Anderson favorite. Wes had a huge rift with Gene Hackman during filming and Bill Murray(!) famously was the mediator.
The younger actors, Gwyneth, Owen, Ben and Luke were so intimated by Hackman that Angelica Huston had to intervene with him and ask him to take it easy on the "kids."
"Your reviews aren't that good." God, I love that line. It's a throwaway line, but is so perfect. Easily my favorite Wes Anderson film. No idea how many times I've seen it. Not enough.
Absolutely, hands down my favourite film by Wes Anderson. I wish there was a word to describe how art can make you feel something deeply for another time and place. That's what "The Royal Tenenbaums" does for me. Thanks for reacting to this one.
Thanks, Brandon!!! What a surprise! LOVE this movie, there really needs to be so many more reactions to this one!!!! Checking it out now! Had to thank you in advance!
I am such a big fan of Wes Anderson's work. The way he dresses a set, to the way the scene to scene movement shows the walls like a cross section, to the way he lays down the soundtrack. I am not a film or acting student, but Anderson has a unique style that gives it away early in the movie. I just saw The French Dispatch (2021) for the first time a couple days ago, and I knew literally within the first 3 minutes that this was an Anderson picture. Rushmore, Grand Budapest and Moonrise Kingdom are fantastic. The only bummer is that he doesn't crank these masterpieces out on a monthly basis.
The last great performance from Gene Hackman, and one Angelica Huston's best as well. Man oh man, what an actor Hackman was. Still alive. I had always wished him and Jack Nicholson had made a movie together (where they appear in the same scenes together - so "Reds" doesn't count!) Could still happen! lol. Man oh man, "The Conversation" with Gene Hackman (directed by Coppolla) is AMAZING. I also love him in his debut: "Bonnie And Clyde", another fantastic (and groundbreaking) movie - I put that movie (and "The Graduate", which came out a few months later) as the dividing line between the old and newer, more realistic, modern style (although it wasn't that cut-and-dry!) Great reaction, great movie! My fave Wes Anderson movie, definitely.
Hey Kate, just to let you know, ReactWithMike just did a great reaction for "Rushmore" (all his reactions are great, I must say) (and if you like the new show "Severance", he's doing that also, one of the only reactors to do it so far) ;) Anyways, here's Rushmore, if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/onjlv5sgmz8/w-d-xo.html
This waz the first WA ive seen and I was both baffled at the directing and fast paced narrative and at awe with the visual style. Been a fan ever since.
Love this one, so creative and funny, in a low-key way. I also like the font used....it's been seen in a few of his others, it reminds me of the type of lettering I used to see in grade school, usually in third grade and under. Rushmore is the first movie by Wes Anderson I ever watched and recommend it highly. Island of Dogs is another one to see. Just amazing work.
Moonrise Kingdom is my all-time favorite and I thoroughly cannot wait to see you react to it if you have not already. When I was younger I tried to watch the Royal Tenenbaums and got it out from the library but my parents watched it first to approve it and they wouldn't let me watch it (Which is ironic because they used to let me watch The Brady Bunch which is similar if you get what I mean). But so many years went by and I saw a trailer for Moonrise Kingdom and I instantly wanted to watch it not realizing it was made by the same director. Even more, years went by and I was too busy among other reasons until someone came into my life that meant a lot to me. He was the first person who I connected with especially on a film level who essentially introduced me to the world of Wes Anderson "again." He mentioned Moonrise Kingdom and I said I had been wanting to watch it forever but couldn't afford to get it originally, then I had forgotten the title of it at that point since it had been so long. And we watched it together and I fell in absolute love with the movie, it became "our movie" and I was able to watch all of Wes Anderson's other movies including this one that I couldn't watch when I was younger. Moonrise Kingdom ended up being my first Wes Anderson film and it will always have such a near and dear place in my heart because of who introduced it to me. We also saw Isle of Dogs in theaters which was my 1st time watching his work on the big scene and we loved it as well
Such a joy seeing you experience Wes Anderson's incredible work. So far you've reacted to my top 3. Looking forward to your take on the rest of his epic filmography. These are truly my favorite kind of reactions.
I saw this in an early theatrical release in late 2001 at the Uptown Theatre in MN (since closed). It was an old style single theatre with creaky chairs and wild ornate walls. It was perfect for this film. I was in college and the movie floored me. I feel like later Wes films leaned far too much into the artifice for my tastes, but Royal Tenenbaums followed closely for me by Moonrise Kingdom hit the balance perfectly.
If you've not yet seen it, SNL had a wonderful parody of Wes Anderson called "The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders." They completely nailed the style and tone. Certainly worth a few minutes of your time.
The Tenenbaums is the first Wes Anderson movie I've ever watched so it's got a big place in my heart but honestly Rushmore would be on the same level for me, I'm so in love with this fucking movie that it makes me pretty sad so few people mention it in the comments, Bill Murray and Schwartzman are amazing, the soundtrack, the aesthetic, ugh, it's all so well done, I really think you'd love it !
This is classic Anderson. Something changed around the Moonrise Kingdom and on. Can’t put my finger on it. But his earlier films are definitely my favorites.

Rewatch the beginning of grand Budapest. When Jude law is describing the present hotel guests, one smoking on a balcony looks suspiciously like what Royal would have looked like in the 60s.

You seem to honestly enjoy Wes A's style and unique form of visual storytelling.... You really should check out the French director, Jean Pierre Jeunet. Similar amazing attention to every visual detail - yet a wholly unique style all his own. Amelie or The City of Lost Children would be a great place to start. Cheers!

And I adored it (though I did skip a bit of it for my health). It's so unapologetically about mental illness and manages to make it a story about a cast of what I think are all mentally ill characters heavy, funny, and charming. In stories about mental illness, you don't get that variety often. And fun fact! One of Chaz's kids is played by the same actor who played young Monk in the show "Monk", which is kinda also like this film in terms of its handling of anxiety and trauma. Funny but melancholy.

You should definitely check out The Darjeeling Limited. I feel like it's a very underrated film from his filmography imo. And of course Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson continue to kill it
The fact that most of the movie is so charming makes Luke Wilson’s bathroom scene much heavier

This is one of my favorite movies. A memorable experience for me and my friends that we'll share for life. I'm interested to know what you think of Rushmore. It has a lot of Bill Murray in it.
this is almost my favorite by Wes. Isle of Dogs is still #1, this probably lands #3
You should definitely check out The Darjeeling Limited. I feel like it's a very underrated film from his filmography imo. And of course Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson continue to kill it
If you like Bill Murray, you really got to do *Rushmore* next
