  • How to trap and remove sparrows that may be killing native songbirds. This live catch cage allows you to manage them unharmed so it does not risk injuring harmless songbirds that are native to the United States. This is the best trap system I've found.
Here is an alternative Design: goo.gl/Cm7HQJ
Inside your bluebird box trap system: • How to Trap House Spar...
I have no affiliation with that channel, just a great design :)
Should you be trapping House Sparrows?
Why use a live catch trap system?
Trapping anything should not be taken lightly and live catch systems are only humane when they are continuously monitored.
This system does not stress the birds and you can release easily after capture, completely unharmed.
Articles that I would like you to read before you get upset:
    www.nabluebirdsociety.org/PDF/...
Purple Martin Societies and Bluebird Societies nationwide endorse trapping of House Sparrows.
With Live Catch systems, if you change your mind, you can release the birds unharmed.
In cities, you see house sparrows displacing native song birds in huge numbers, most people think they are cute sparrows and provide seed feed and housing with perches as they help them overtake urban areas bird houses and feeders. They simply don't know what they are capable of.
I feed only black oil sunflower seeds at my feeders, I use seed feed in the live catch trap as this is most likely to attract the house sparrows.
If you do take measures to control house sparrow populations, you will see songbird numbers rebound in your area. I have seen a steady decline in BlueBird egg hatch rates and have watched House Sparrows attack and destroy baby birds and chase away BlueBirds. Wood Peckers and some other nesters seem able to defend themselves. Tree Swallows nest in groups and fight off House Sparrows with superior numbers, but even tree swallows that start early or remain nesting late, will be attacked and often killed.
This Trap was purchased from: www.SparrowTraps.net
I was not compensated for my review in any way.

You might try using just millet and/or bread crumbs for bait. It might discourage the good birds and attract the trash sparrows. I only use millet in my trap. This is a great trap, I have two of them.

Nice video and excellent trap. Used to build large 6'X6'X6' Troyer V - traps for Euro. Starlings. They work very well and some days I would catch 35 - 40 birds in 24 hours. I used garbage for bait and always had water available in the trap area.. As you point out it's very important to monitor the traps -- one afternoon I had trapped about 15 Starlings. The next time I looked at the trap chaos was prevailing. An immature female Cooper's Hawk had entered the trap and proceeded to kill 3 Starlings -- the trapped Starlings were panicking and fighting back at the same time. It was a mess to untangle -- but I got the hawk out unharmed -- but with a lot of bird shit on my coveralls. I released her but she stayed in a tree in the yard until I took the 3 dead Starlings out of the cage and put them on the ground. The hawk immediately snatched one as soon as I was out of sight. It was dusk and all three were gone the next morning. It was a very cold winter and I surmise that the hawk, not having refined her hunting skills yet, was very hungry - she had to be to take such chances?

I have used this trap for years with great success trapping house sparrows. I now raise 2 clutches of bluebirds per year on my farm. These sparrows love to hang around farms. I bait with straight cracked corn from Tractor Supply. I rarely ever get any other species but house sparrows.

I host nesting bluebirds, tree swallows, woodpeckers and purple martins. I have one of these traps installed on a shed with an indoor roosting compartment. I only use white bread as an attractant and I keep a few house sparrows live in that trap that act as decoys. It makes it much more effective. There is nothing worse then having house sparrows or Starlings devastate your cavity-nesting birds that you are trying to preserve. Fred you and I are similar thinking people. I wish there were more people like you. On a side note I started keeping chickens 2 years ago.

Yes! There is an old gentleman who has actualy made a side-box for this trap and has the results you're describing. I can't get mine to pay attention to bread, but the city sparrows sure do! Mine seem to like that mixed seed. If I leave them in the trap through the day and past sunset, others seem to join them in those last few hours of sunlight - leaving the females and removing the males is an excellent magnet :) Yep, great minds!

They are one of the species who go into my henhouses for a free meal. I see them waiting in the bushes till I feed. I now only put enough feed in just before roost time for the chickens. Can't afford to feed every sparrow and cardinal around here.

Nice video Fred. I have used a couple of these traps for past 10 years and they work great. When actively trapping, I try to leave a couple live House Sparrows (we call them decoys) in the trap to draw in more. These highly social birds are attracted to more of their kind and other native species are more likely to stay away when they are in there. Trap is also very effective during winter months for capturing a LOT of European Starlings (non-native bird that also kills our native cavity nesters). It only works for them when there is a little snow cover, and especially when snow is flying. Trap baited with peanut butter at back of bait tray and weighted for larger bird works great. Important if leaving decoys in trap to feed and water them.

I ordered mine and getting it today in the mail. Last year English house sparrows killed one of my adult Male bluebirds right in the nest box. The year before, they pierced the eggs and tossed them out of the box. The chicks inside were developed enough for me to see them. They want a war? Now it's on! I notice that you dont have baffles or sparrow spookers. The baffle is good to keep snakes out. I had that problem also before putting them up

Frederick-- Ive mentioned this before but enjoyed watching your double suet cage vid many times , the music blends well. I have the same cage but after a period of time the house sparrows mobbed it and I no longer use it and the starlings were a pest too. So I made a couple upside down suet feeders which eliminated the HS and only an occasional starling which I can live with.

when i was young i was compelled by a mysterious blue bird that appeared in my hometown. I was never really into electronics on tv heh...so I spent the summer trying to catch it!😂
I did a lot of research and even built a trap just like this! but not as sophisticated.
but...m I caught a bunch of sparrows instead.
I ended up making a good ole fashioned stick trap heh. tied a thin rope to a stick and placed a basket on the end of the stick and it took a few days but with a few bags of peanuts and a little luck I got it! it was a western scrub Jay. I observed it for a few hours then set it free.

Good video. I appreciate you taking the time to explain why we catch sparrows and why we try NOT to catch protected songbirds. Hopefully those that use this style of trap will monitor it as well as you do. My fear is most people do not have the skills to identify a HOSP vs some songbirds and thus there will be casualties. This style of trap trap is a copy of an old design. There are newer,. more technically proven and targeted means to humanely catching invasive sparrows. The one I prefer is the Sparrow Trap Door used with Sparrow call to catch the decoy bird. Then using the decoy bird you can use a simple, inexpensive funnel trap to catch the remaining ones. Do this in the spring to catch all the new sparrow fledglings and you will definitely make a dent in the population.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is extremely interesting.. if you have a link to the sparrow call partnered with the trap door system you describe, that would be very helpful for others. You are exactly right, these systems are only good if people monitor them. Same goes for any and all live catch traps, they are only humane if frequently monitored. Should be put away or inactivated when owners are not home.

I saw a blue jay then never again, chickadees I see 2 or 3. It's all just house sparrows. There was a native bird who made a nest in my tree and the very next day I already 2 sparrows mating in it. Not only that there are 4 stray cats. That I need to catch and take them to a shelter. 2 invasives in my backyard. So unfortunately I will not be feeding anymore birds until I can find a solution to both problems. Cardinals must have been easy for these strays to get. Dr Phil said this once and I never forgot it "there are people in the world who wake up each and every day with the intention to bring harm to others". It's sobering to know they are out there.

It's frightening. And justice does'n"t her work. The criminel and the mad people are not punished or confined inough. And here in France the prisons are almost looking like a holliday in hotel... Just last saturday a women was victim of a knife attack near my dougther's shop. (excuse if my English is not very good). The man was more time in psychiatrik thérapie but they let him free and this poor woman never now him she was just on wrong place at wrong time. He said his life is "shit" and he was just angry... And the woman ?... She's between life and death. Sorry to have deviated from the subject of your vidéo. Successful continuation and if you are interest for birds and have a little time to look my vidéo from our house sparrow TCHIPI you will see how much lovely he is and be surprised of the plays we made with him like a dog lol. th-cam.com/video/Rl9AUkXq8mw/w-d-xo.html

Yikes! For anyone watching this - be very careful about cowbirds because the video was not clear on that. The video mentions "why we want to trap" them. While these birds are heartbreaking, they are native to North America. Most states protect them. Therefore we Do NOT want to actively trap cowbirds. As a native species, nor do we want to euthanize them. Occasionally states will lift these requirements when numbers are out of hand in order to control populations. But in general, native species play a role in their ecosystem and we must be careful about interference.
Now when it comes to house sparrows and starlings, they are not native. Instead they are invasive and have decimated the populations of native birds. They are not federally protected either. Without trapping and euthanizing them, their proliferation could lead to extinctions or endangering many native species.
Tldr: do not actively trap and euthanize cowbirds or interfere unless your state has given you clearance - otherwise doing so is illegal and could have unanticipated environmental consequences. Do actively trap the invasive species so that we can protect our native birds from endangerment.

True, you need to release cowbirds.

Do you have a preferred humane way to euthanize the house sparrows?
Also what to do with their eggs

Hand them over to wildlife recovery centers, or CO2 to put them to sleep.
