Maybeeee tears for fears first album the hurting. The best sounding pop album of all time in my opinion besides their second album. An album with a surprising amount of depth about abuse and depression and is some of the best bombastic pop music you will ever hear. Imagine Dragons wishes they were as good as that.

19:17 The “Kubrick Stare" is one of Stanley Kubrick's most recognizable directorial techniques, a method of shot composition where a character stares at the camera with a forward tilt, to convey to the audience that the character in question is at the peak of their derangement.

First album I ever bought. Definitely agree dental care sucks, but I have too many memories to hate Owl City, and I think that part of the reason this was a success at the time was because of the cheesy earnestness of the lyrics, being a contrast to a lot of the pop music at the time.

It’s really hard for me to judge Owl City now since it’s drenched in nostalgia for me, but it’s probably safe to say that a lot of it hasn’t aged too gracefully. I’m just happy that myself and others were able to enjoy his work.

This album, Of June, and Maybe I'm Dreaming by Owl City were my childhood. It feels so weird to see people listen to it for the first time now, cause it's clouded in nostalgia for me. I don't know if I'd love it like I do if I heard it for the first time today, but it's so dreamy and puts me into this imaginative mindscape that I love. I don't even give a fuck about the positive nature of it, because it's meant to be a fantasy. But, I think the two albums before Ocean Eyes are even better.

I'll admit that I haven't listened to much music in this genre, but something about Adam's melodies and synth choices just does it for me like nothing else I've ever heard. It feels like you got so hung up on the lyrics and the "production" that you couldn't appreciate the actual music. Personally, I think the production on this album is great, apart from Umbrella Beach blowing out my eardrums every time it comes on. Every instrument, every little nuance is audible, and that's really hard to pull off from a mixing standpoint. I think he did a great job with it.

I really enjoyed this album back in the day. I guess I just saw it as owl city cataloguing his lucid dreams, which he’s actually somewhat confirmed. If you really look at everything from the lyrics to instrumentals it’s all very dream like, and I think he really succeeded in creating that aesthetic albeit some overly sugary moments.

The funniest part about this album is that the best songs on it are remakes of ones from the previous 2 eps he made. The problem is that the originals were a lot more subtle and lofi which is what I love so much about them, they really give off such a nice flow and vibe in the context of the original track listings. But when he remade them he made all of them sound more like umbrella beach which is just all up in your face slamming you with sound, killing the vibe of the original tracks somewhat. This album is 100% where I started to see a decline in the sound and even though all things bright and beautiful is a good album and a lot more cohesive, it was basically the last hurrah for what I liked about Adam Young's music so much and ever since he's put out basically nothing of worth aside from the ultraviolet ep imo.

I couldn’t agree more tbh. Ocean Eyes was desperately mediocre. The only good Owl City album is Maybe I’m Dreaming imo, and Of June was decent having one of the best Owl City songs (Swimming In Miami), but above all else though, Adam’s Sky Sailing Project (An Airplane Carried Me to Bed) is my favourite thing that Adam Young has done by far. I wish he had done more than 1 album for it, but yeah it was a masterpiece, and something that only true fans will most likely know as it was very underrated.

I think Owl City's big appeal to me is the lyrics? I listened to you not getting into the songs and saying "the lyrics suck" but I find them very fun and highly quotable. I think this is why Dental Care, of all things, is my second favorite song on the album. IT IS ALL PUNS. I am 100% into puns and it is so incredible.
"I've been to the dentist 1000x so I know the drill" is a masterpiece in lyric writing. This is the sort of thing I strive for.

Owl City was such a major part of my adolescence. Ultraviolet was the first music I ever bought on iTunes. It was the closest thing I had to "secular music" besides my parents' 70-80s rock albums. I was super Christian and didn't know what good taste was. Now, as an older agnostic, I look back fondly on younger me waiting for music updates from Adam Young. Hey Brad, great video!
If you're looking for an album to react to next, I would suggest Jackson Square by Arkells. The record is a surprisingly fantastic pop-rock album that is solid throughout the entire 42-minute runtime. I think that you would enjoy it!

It’s so funny, I’ve always enjoyed these songs, but I haven’t ever listened to the album in order and back to back like this. I think I enjoy more hearing one of these tracks popping up in shuffle. You can always tell what album it’s from and it fits the vibe. My favorite song on the album is 0If My Heart was a house” because the cheesey lyrics work well with a grand declaration of love, which the song is.

You should try some stuff off of his other projects. Port Blue, Sky Sailing, etc. And his instrumental stuff he just puts under his name, Adam Young. He is one of my favorite musicians, mostly due to my favorite songs from these other projects, and how impactful/captivating they are for me.
Love your reviews, I feel like most reviewers just try to say what most people would agree with but my boy Bradly don't give a fuck! XD
Always nice to see actual genuine opinions being shared in a review. Keep it up!

There are some excellent melodies on this record...but yeah, there's a good few bad songs to go with the good ones. Also, the bonus tracks Hot Air Balloon are Strawberry Avalanche are imo at least as catchy as anything else on the main record.
Favourite songs: Cave In, On the Wing, Fireflies, Tip of the Iceberg
Worst: Umbrella Beach, Dental Care, Bird and the Worm

If you can't understand poetry or art (which clearly you don't) then stop making album reviews like these. It takes a lot to understand an artist and what they are trying to convey through the music. I don't know if it's because of your ADHD but I couldn't help but cringe when you kept yawning at some of the slower, less upbeat songs. Pay attention to the production and the lyrics a little more when you review songs and maybe, JUST MAYBE your album reviews will start to become a lot more informative and un biased.
