I remember this! I was getting ready to head off to school and looked out the window to see this lone cloud in the sky. I jokingly imagined lightning coming out of such a tiny cloud, but was temporarily mind blown when a bolt of lightning actually appeared. To this day, this holds the record for being the smallest thunderstorm I have ever seen. I guess California storms aren't known for being that big...

It's cumulonimbus clouds which called thunder clouds. Cumulonimbus cloud forming from stage cumulus cloud in hot summer day, this clouds can produce: thunderstorms, tornado, cyclone, very fast microwinds and more another. This clouds it's very dangerous for people, if lighting strike with brighter light hit people, they will die, i not know, why. I'm not know, why i write words wrong? I'm always write words very good

That is a high base, shallow Cumulonimbus, people. The reason for it's high base is low atmospheric moisture content, at least at the surface. The dewpoint was probably only around 45 or 50 degrees. Also, their was likely a cold pocket aloft associated with a nearby low pressure system or baroclinic zone, hence the shallow nature of the cloud. When the air is colder than normal in the mid and upper atmosphere, you get icing at lower levels, hence you can get lightning from shorter clouds.

I like this video I had to repeat it like about 10 times, just amazing shots of a single cell thunderstorm. This is a cumulonimbus but very high base and I think most people were expecting to see a anvil. They were there but too high up to see. A visible satellite might would have caught it at 1 Km resolution.

There Must have been plenty of lift/instability associated with an upper level low or disturbance, because a cloud that small most likely won't produce that much lightning. Plus, notice how only one part of the cloud actually drops rain so that tells me that the atmospheric moisture content was low.

This small storm cloud with lightning indicates: start of a storm that would produce tornados and hail. However this storm may be a very
Dangerous deracho and a supercell. Imagine there was a tornado

Would produce sprites in the sky. That would be insane.
