    The tiny white coffin story perfectly shows the duality of Norm Macdonald. He was extremely sensitive to the horrors of life and he used comedy as a hedge against it. As hard as he tried though, you can still see the sincere pain in his eyes at the end of the white coffin story. It's hard to see him like that.

      life is full of missed opportunities - they go by so fast there's rarely time to consider how profound one might be. Thank God for video. We can hear the missed opportunity of the moderator when Norm says, "something like that happened to me. . ", yet. . moved on. The moment of humanity and raw emotion was there for the sharing. . missed it. RIP Norm, genius just doesn't describe you, it's too. . common a word - you were uncommon and. . well, there's no word. I helped take care of my Grandpa the last year of his life before Alzheimer's took him. I watched my brother Jess being taken off life support, after an overdose of heroin, it took him 45 minutes to die. About a year later my last remaining brother Jason, (Jess's twin) died of a heroin overdose as well. My Aunt & Uncle died a month apart. then my Grandmother passed.
    This all happened within about four years, I was (still am) shattered. My life line was Norm Macdonald videos, it took me away from my mind, I laughed at his one in a million intellect, and when he died, it made me feel like the world was empty again.

Being a Finn I never thought I'd ever have a chance to see one of my favorites live but I just so happened to be visiting the States and DC along with my family, checked if there was any interesting stand up in the area and saw that Norm's there! So I borrowed a car from my mom's aunt who lives in the area (thanks a bunch!). Took some time to actually get the car from her husband, who was getting home from work, so I was in a hurry driving downtown from the suburbs (think it was Alexandria). Probably broke some traffic laws here and there and rightfully got honked at a couple of times 'cause I just had to slip through some tight spots in the traffic to make it in time. And I did! • @wymanrtaylor

    On the off-chance that Norm ever sees this comment, I want to say that his chapter “the final chapter” is not correct. The only true statement in that chapter as far as I’m concerned is “I don’t care if my g/f doesn’t understand,” but that’s because she’s a woman, and she’s the funniest person I know aside from every male friend I have. But I would show up for the next show if he ever came to Syracuse, and I think the only person who appreciates him more than I do is Dennis Miller.
    I was born in ‘85 and it is true that I was first introduced to him via “weekend update”, but that is not why I’ll remember him; not by a long shot. I caught his Courtney Thorne-Smith interruption in Conan live, when it was first aired, when I was what? 12 years old? But by God, even as a boy, I laughed like a hyena, and I’ve followed him ever since. No, his time on SNL is barely a footnote for me; I look him up on TH-cam constantly, and I NEVER look for “Weekend Update” clips. Norm, you’re a legend, and if you truly feel about yourself what you wrote in that chapter, know that you have legions of fans who know Don Olmeyer only as a quisling, and know that you were, and still are, one of the greatest comedians who ever lived, and who is still killing it now as I write this on July 25, 2021.
    Thank you, Norm, not just for all the laughs you gave me in the past, but for all the laughs you still give me to this day, and those that I know will come in the future.

    In minute 41:20, where Norm reads the "Final Chapter", you can hear norm's voice breaking as he contemplates his humanity, his life, and mortality. I think its not a stretch to say maybe he already knew then of his condition, maybe he didnt, but i would not be surprised if he did given how emotional he was while reading it. What an amazing pick from the interviewer. Truly amazing.

      Mark Twain said there is no such thing as true originality. Every idea is second hand, taken consciously or unconsciously from a million sources. So you’re probably right, but norm himself might not even be aware of it.

    • @Bonez0r
      @Bonez0r 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Norm sometimes borrows jokes from other people, often with better delivery than the original. Probably the best known example is when he was on David Letterman's last show ("Norm Macdonald Last Stand Up on Letterman" 7:20) and as a tribute he performed a joke he had heard when he first saw Letterman perform decades earlier during a standup act (the joke about the garbage truck). Two other examples are in the video "Norm MacDonald @ Canadian Candy Awards 2016" where he borrowed one joke from Don Rickles and another from Martin Short who was present in the audience.
