I hand pollinated them all the same way but after about 4 days I noticed 3 had died . Its been about 7 days now and the 1 fruit is still growing. Is it advantageous to cross a specific DF pollen to another for certain fruit characteristics or use whatever pollen you can get or find? How long will pollen be viable? Is pollen storage best in a container in room temperature, refrigerator or freezer? How long is it good for? Will putting in pollen A into plant B the same as putting pollen B into plant A? Are there better pollen combos (the difference that creates the best, biggest, tastiest fruit), and if so, what are some to get best tasting, largest fruits? What do you feel is best practice as a higher level hobby grower vs a commercial grower. Obviously I'm just focused on fruit but you could crowd for any characteristics, right? I know the reality is that pollinating is only on piece of the puzzle to get the desired outcome including soil, fertilizing, weather, water, and growing environment, to name few. Just a few questions on my journey as I enter the dragon!

    I live in Port St Lucie, Fl and found some wild dragonfruit cactus growing in a vacant lot. I planted them in the backyard and they are big and beautiful on the trellis. Problem is, I have attempted to pollinate them at night on three separate occasions I have done this exactly as shown in your videos, but the fruit always turn yellow and fall off. I suspect that these need cross pollination with other plants. Are there some varieties that require pollination from a totally separate plant?

    • @a-yiathoj6391
      @a-yiathoj6391 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SoulSeeker770 Looks like it could be any number of factors. 1) Age of your plant. If it's still young, the plant may still abort if it doesn't feel I can produce enough nutrients to support the fruit development. Which also leads to the amount of root development your plant has achieved. Without appropriate roots, it won't be able to absorb enough nutrients even if it is available in your soil. 2) Nutrient quality and density of your soil. If you're over-watering or there's been too much rain, there is a possibility that your nutrients could be washing out of your pot (unless you got it planted in the ground). Most growers fix this with fertilizer or foliar sprays. 3) If the pollen is too closely related to the mother plant, the pollination may not set either. I'm sure you probably accounted for this already by using very different varieties of pollen, but worth mentioning. 4) Your extreme weather could also affect the fruiting of the flower. I know colder temps will do reduce the blooming and fruiting of dragon fruit. It might be possible that extreme heat could do that too. Don't quote me on that though.
      As a side note, I believe the purple haze is a self-sterile variety. It needs cross pollination to fruit.
