Amazing collection of Dawn redwood especially the spooky tree love it I have pruned back my dawn redwoods the other day loads of new buds for next year I haven’t taken cuttings when is the best time to do that and should I use rooting gel great video Xavier loved it 🫶
Loved the first redwood with its two smaller roots giving it an animal like appearance - almost like a giraffe rearing up. A lot of ficus with their aerial roots look like this. Great video and the details are appreciated.
I share your admiration of the Dawn redwoods, got 2 young ones in development now. They look similar to my Bald Cypress, which I also love. And you can’t overwater either of them. In fact, it was your in depth video of how you properly prune the Dawn Redwood that got me interested in them. Excellent as always!
Perfect winter bonsai cleanup ready for the cold wet winter we get in the UK. Great redwoods Xav, I am glad you left the spooky tree intact I must admit I do prefer to see redwood slim and straight. I have never had a redwood, never found one I want to include in the garden yet.all the best my friend.
❤ the spooky redwood 😊 My to buy list includes Larch and Redwood. The only hold up is plants for the front garden are currently hogging the space, but that's another story.
Great video once again xavier, ill be following your advice on my redwood later this month and then covering the pot with pine bark mulch for the winter
Nice Redwood Trees. I have one too and it makes a lot of fun to work whit it. i have a slime one too and you must do a wire for bring it down. good luck and Cheers By
They were struck from either spring or summer cuttings. Mostly spring from the previous years unwanted shoots. If I am taking cuttings I tend to leave a few shoots in place during my autumn clean up for the following spring
God I miss my redwood I bought it as a small bonsai from my first bonsai show I went too. I got it to grow to about 3 to 4 feet tall and it died after a repot
Tough one...it should have buds on it at least at the baases of branches. If the trunk is alive then it may still send out new buds in the springtime. Definitely not time to panic yet :)
Great video packed with top tips and info 👍
the one in the terracotta is a real beaut.
That one has surprised me with the way it has developed. What are your thoguhts on that pot...perhaps a bit deep?
I love Dawn Redwoods too ❤
They are always pleasing to look at...just like me :)
I agree with you Xav, I very much like those two roots.
Cheers Mary
Lovely collection Xavier great to see how you make these bonsai , you have a great collection.
They are a lot of fun to work with :)

I take my cuttings mostly in the spring or in the summer. Both have taken. Never used rooting gel for this species.

Thanks for all your support as always

They are pretty hardy to most conditions. Even when they get baked they throw out loads of new shoots
Thanks Xavier, you've given me the confidence to tackle mine tomorrow 😊

Definitely right about the wire. That is why I need to start again on the slim one.
Thanks Xaz some really good advice, need to look at my forest panting when they drop, they are hanging for ever.
I think the early snow convinced all of mine to drop the needles
Very helpful video
I have a twin trunk redwood that’s about 13 years old
I didn’t do
Anything on it this year so needs tlc next year
Thank you
Would now be a good time to work on dawn redwoods to create a forest planting from some individual trees please
I would probably wait until Late winter for any new planting work (Feb/Mar)
Hi Xavier what season did you strike the red wood cuttings Cheers mate

👍👌🙂
Thanks bruce

That's tragic :(
Yes very tragic so I trying to get a new one
My dawn redwood has no buds what does that mean is it dead (Dave)
