A lot of people tell us that they have trouble trying to figure out how to setup and operate the Gold Bug 2 so these are my best settings for using one in the field to find that very tiny Gold. They can also be used in the Hard Rock mines to find that beautiful specimen Gold too. And for more vids on metal detecting watch this vid th-cam.com/video/YJRRVRp5WCo/w-d-xo.html. Let us know what settings you like to use on the GB2 and smash that like button...SMASH it HARD.

No worries I took it out on union pass and it balanced great. I wasn’t expecting to find any color but did zero in on casings and one mangled bullet

Like any machine, you have to get out and practice practice practice! Then practice some more. You'll understand what it's telling you and get a lot more than frustrated. Grabbing up shiny makes it all worth the time spent learning.

    All-
I have the Gold Bug 2 and have literally found a thousand nuggets with it. It is an amazing machine and can find nuggets (specks) down to 0.005 - 0.01 grams.
The trouble is learning how to balance and keep it balanced plus learning the right 'zip-zip' sound as you swing by a target vs ground noise. The 10" coil is trash - unless you are looking for a bulldozer track.
My wife was constantly frustrated with the GB2 so I bought her a Minelab Gold Monster 1000. She prefers my GPX 5000, so I learned how to use the GM. It is a remarkable machine and is easier to use (ignore the iron/gold bar).
I am a geologist. As such, I frequently test things... Within a 20' x 20' patch, I located and spray painted 15 targest (undug) the Minelab with a 14" Nuggetfinder could find 11 of the targets. The GB 2 with the 6.5" coil found 10 targets. GB 2 with 10" coil found NONE. GM with 5" coil found 11 targets. The GM and GB 2 identified the exact same targets and missed 5 that were out of range of the machines. The GPX 5000 missed four targets, but each of the missed targets were under 0.20 grams.
The GPX 5000 located 5 nuggets from 4 - 10 grams each that neither of the other detectors even sniffed.
Essentially, the GM and GB2 have depth limitations but are superb for finding the small ones. You need a more powerful machine to go deeper and confirm you have not missed a nugget in your search area.
The larger coil on the GM 1000 does provide a degree of better depth penetration but not as good as the GPX 5000 by any comparison.
There ARE advantages to both machines (GB2 and GM1000), and both have disadvantages. I highly suggest that with either one, get some lead pellets (1 gram) and bury 1 at a series of depths and learn the depth limits. Then use 2 gram targets the same way (until the machine cannot detect them). Repeat at 3,4,5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 50 grams. Bury the targets (not within 2' of each other) at incremental depths of 0, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... to about 12"
Since you know they are there, you should NOT lose any... then try with smaller targets (.5, .25, .10, .05 gram).
The results will instruct you as to what are you really looking for with each swing.
Bury the targets - do not "air test".
Do it with ultra dry ground and then water the ground and repeat - huge difference!
Wet clays are not your friend.
The bonus to doing these tests yourself is that you WILL learn more about your detector, how it sounds, when it works best, and what it is really detecting.
Anyone tells you otherwise (know the limits of your machine) is giving you bad advice or doesn't know what they are talking about.
    Best Regards,
    Paul

Almost bought one of these, but ended up going with the Makro Gold Cruzer. Ain't found no gold yet, but it is definitely a sensitive machine. Found a mangled up Prince Albert can about one foot down in a prospect dump. The fact that nobody else had dug it up tells me that nobody else has been detecting in that area.

I run my GB2 in silver mine waste piles. The 6in. coil gets in tight places and at 3lbs I can swing it all day. I ground balance on low volume and run with the iron discrimination on , normal soil , sensitivity on max and no headphones...gotta listen for bears , no joke ! My favourite noise is WEE-WEE sweet even tone on front and back-swing. WEE-WOO not good. PEEP!-PEEP! Blasting Cap , really not good !! Coil-cover and a hard-case are a must. Thanks Jeff

Using a gold bug is like cooking a steak. Low and slow. Sorry. Them other arm swingers think they can fly through a patch. Oh well. I loved the video. Pro tip: Bring a small Shop-Vac (with narrow tip attachment) and a UPS. Vacuum the dirt in the cracks, you'll get all the small dirt/gold to pan out, later, and reveal the nugggets at the same time. Lots of small gold in them cracks!

Fisher actually had a different Gold bug 2.
It was a great machine but much too complicated for the average Joe.
So they went back to the original Goldbug with just a couple tweaks.
These are great machines You can actually hear the difference in between the different minerals there’s that precision especially if you’re advanced !
My first goldbug was 000327 I got in the early 80s I
I own about every gold detector there is the Goldbug is a machine of its own and always will be!

In 2007 I had an extra $800 burning a hole in my pocket for a new VLF gold detector. I had to choose between the GMT or the GBII. I did pick the GMT but I always wanted the GBII. Now 17 years and many detectors later, the price just dropped on the updated version of the GBII so much I couldn't resist and had to get it. I can't wait to get out with it.

I just got the gold bug 2 with the digital display and there is a wide range of ground balancing to dial in if I press down on the knob it brings me to 75 It seams to be harder to get to where I need to be. I’m going back up in today to test a little bit but it’s not the hot spot I found with all kinds of sign. There is a back fill I can’t tell if it was a tester hole or a played out claim. Lots of quarts and trumpet. And Burros loll. Maybe they can lead me to gold like rich hill

If you ever in Southern Vermont definitely get ahold of me! I can bring you to a old gold mine that was a production mine for a short period of time. I could tell you so many stories about the old timers around here. I'm sure you know gold is a byproduct of copper. Gold bug or gold monster? I like the monster better, never used either of them . However seen both used as far as operation I prefer the minelab 1000 gold monster, I can't afford either, I'm going to attempting building one, start with a cheap detector about $40-$50, to use the basic structure, the handle, cuff, tube. Then 3d print coils and covers I'm thinking 4.5" coil, and a 2.5"-3.5" x 10"-12"roughly, and a few other coils to experiment with. A6" pancake coil, and 5-6" cylinder coil, that is about 3-4" thick , and looking to run it between 60khz and 100khz. Possibly running 2-3 frequencies to help with discrimination, use a red led for iron likely targets, and blue for gold possibly targets, I really want to get out and hunt gold. In on 25-45 minutes from the Carolina slate belt, and there was a couple gold mines about 20-45 minutes from here. Depending on exactly where it was, but this was 1790's to 1850's. In ash county NC. The geology report says the ore was exceptional mostly gold with some copper they mined both. And something else, (can't recall,) $30+ to $76 per ton of gold in 1840's/50's dollars, the vein pinched and swelled and I think it got to the point it pinched and wasn't financially possible for a mining company to work not enough vein for them to profit, but at $2000/oz it is possible great for a few guys hit it hard for a few years. Pull out some $hiny $$$ I'd like to find out! As easy as nitro is to make, haha😮😮😮 boom💥

I have a Gold Bug 2 in need of repair. My ex left the batterys in it and stored it in a non-climate-controlled unit. After the divorce, I wanted to continue with prospecting and metal detecting. Unfortunately, the connection post on the left side broke out due to the corrosion from the battery. I have called a few places around my area, Upstate SC/NE Georgia, but no luck. I really miss getting to spend time outdoors, metal detecting, gold panning and rockhounding.

Great info as always Jeff👍🏻 Do you know if there's a substantial difference between the original gold bug and this gold bug 2? I've got the original one...not too sure about the age of it. Looks basically the same, but some of the controls are slightly different.

If you're technically inclined, find a schematic of a detector circuit, it will tell you all you need to know. Some chips will do most of the work for you.
