5:30 The explanation of GPON being a shared hub sort of connection is fairly inaccurate, because it compares it to the much more shared type of connection that is cable internet.
The fiber connection between the ONT (user side) to the OLT (head end) _is_ dedicated, not shared - if you were to shine a laser on one end, you would see it out the other. There are no active switching devices in between, only passive light-splitting prisms - hence "Passive" Optical Networking. As a result, there really aren't any bottlenecks in between the customer and the head end, and each ONT gets a dedicated TDM channel for its connection - I believe for ISP setups, this is usually a 1x64 split, hence 64 channels; OLAN is typically 1x32, however the new technology XGS-PON (10Gbps PON) supports up to a 1x128 split.
Source: I'm the lead person for an enterprise Tellabs OLAN (GPON) system (and our former Motorola OLAN system) at a Little Ivy League college.

Actually these days (A year later) he could probably consolidate all of that hardware into a single Epic Rome 128 core server Box and replace all the HDD with a few 20Tb drives and use NVMe SSD's for active data leaving the HDD for cold storage. I would think the whole thing could be replaced for $10-15K which would be paid back by the saving in electricity.

GPON - Gigabit Passive Optical Network. Your favorite web search can provide the details. In addition to maximizing the amount of data handled by a single fiber, you'll see your local GPON deployments use pre-built fiber cables. Your install tech does not need the skills of fiber cutting, polishing, and connector attachment that an old-school fiber tech needed for installations in previous decades. As for the Juniper router, close match is www.juniper.net/us/en/products-services/routing/acx-series/acx2100/ , though this is a AC-powered model instead of a DC-powered model.

Tens of megabits per second up, a _choice_ of cable companies? You guys don't know how good you have it! Where I live, Comcast's maximum upload rate is 5 Mbps, and for the higher-priced plans only. The "gigabit" service here maxes out at 40 Mbps. So there's no reason to get more than the cheapest plan that offers 5 Mbps up because 40x5 is the best you'll get no matter how much you pay. The competition is mainly WISPs that offer 256 kbps symmetrical. That's the norm for most of America. The good stuff is only available downtown, for commercial buildings and at breathtaking prices. No wonder the US has fallen so far behind in tech.
