I know this is an old video and probably doesn’t apply anymore but wanted to throw my 2 cents in anyway. I’m the IT Director at the company I work for and have been in IT for nearly 20 years. Our office building had a renovation back in the late 90’s and our building is wired using CAT 5 (not 5E) cables with a manufacture date code of 1997. The patch panels are also CAT 5 (not 5E). Some of the runs are well over 200 feet as it is a 2 story building. I’ve been able to I auto negotiate at 10 gigabit in Windows 10/11 & Windows Server 2019 as well as push near 10 gigabit speed on tools such as iperf3 with no packet loss. I’ve also used Fluke testing equipment to analyze and it also can push 10 gigabits over our longest runs with no packet loss. This is all using the A wiring standard, not the typical B most people use. So, we’ve decided to keep everything in place. Your CAT 5E should be perfectly fine as long as it isn’t CCA and is solid copper from a reputable manufacturer.

Mikrotik make some affordable 10Gbit switches. There is the MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN which is a 4-port SFP+ switch for about $140 on Amazon. Also have an 8-port SFP+ switch (CRS309-1G-8S+IN) for about $240. Though the switches are complicated to setup if you use RouterOS. These switches also support SwitchOS which is much simpler to use.

Pfsense is extraordinarily low maintenance. It also receives regular updates. I have it running on a 1u Lenovo thinkserver and it's pretty much set it and forget it. Burn the image to a thumb drive it's up and running in less than 5 minutes. I have it paired with a tplink switch with 4 SFP+ ports and it handles 10gig with ease.
No worries though. Pfsense will be here whenever you outgrow unifi.

I just upgraded to the Xfinity Gigabit from a 250Mbps plan a month ago. Using their new XB7 gateway in bridge mode connected to the 2.5Gb port with my Netgear RAX120 multi-gig port (skipped the Dream Machine for the RAX120 specifically for the multi-gig WAN and link Aggregation LAN) I’m pulling 1.2Gbps on average down with 47Mbps up, they over-provision! I’m using the XB7 gateway because they bundle the rental fee and removal of the data cap for $25/month. If I find a multi-gig modem they’ll support without issue I might ditch it, but I’ve found I breach the normal 1TB cap sometimes. I live in a mixed zone area with a business across the street and they’re running the 2Gig pro. Spoke to one of their techs in the area a week ago and found out that if I wanted it, I could get the 2 gig line. I’d have no need for that but it’s nice to know if I want it it’s there. I’d love it if they just offered symmetrical 1 Gig.

  • @psychoacer

I'd try to go with 10gig everything mainly for intranet use cases. Like NAS access, virtual machines, multiple machines running network tasks. For the upstairs computer you can get the Mikrotek CRS305-1G-4S+IN for $130 or the CRS309-1G-8S+IN for about $250 when it's in stock. It uses SFP+ but you can get SFP+ nics dirt cheap off of ebay. Also for your devices like laptops that don't have a 10gig port you can get a transceiver for the switch so you can just run straight ethernet off the switch. The best part about doing this is you're less likely to want to upgrade sooner so you have the potential to save money overall.

Gigabit Pro is actually a very weird product.
One one hand, it's crazy expensive for a residential product.
On the other hand, it's crazy cheap for what it is.
Gigabit Pro is a metro Ethernet product, unlike basically all other residential fiber service, which is usually based on one of the Passive Optical Network (PON) standards.
With Gigabit pro, you have Ethernet running over fiber right back to Comcast's network, and you don't share that fiber with anyone else. With a PON-based solution, one fiber is split and serves multiple subscribers.
This means that Comcast's Gigabit Pro is substantially more expensive for them to operate, and it's also a higher quality of service than what you get with PON. It has more consistent bandwidth and lower latency.
Practically, for a residential customer, the performance difference between MetroE and PON is negligible.
You *do* see MetroE in the enterprise space a lot. $299/mo for 2Gbps symmetric MetroE is *insanely* low priced in the enterprise space.
Why Comcast sells basically an enterprise-grade service for $299/mo to residential customers I have no idea. It may just be for marketing. At $299/mo, they *probably* make money on it eventually, but I don't think it's a slam dunk even at that price. Switch ports aren't free, fiber isn't free, and frankly Comcast doesn't have the switch capacity to serve more than a handful of customers with Gigabit Pro.

In reality, you probably don't need to upgrade the network, if you segment it properly. Highest bandwidth draw would probably be your editor, and unless he's using the university's internet, I'd say he's probably capped under 1Gbps download. You can still utilize the 2GiG service without upgrading, assuming the Juniper is capable of multiple 1Gbps dedicated connections. Of course in your situation, you'll probably upgrade the network anyway, but just so folks understand: You could hook up a wifi 6 router and a PC, both wired into the Juniper, and run two simultaneous speed tests, and you should be able to pull ~1Gbps on an iPhone 11 Pro and the editing PC *at the same time*

Hi, I rarely comment but this time wanted to give you a bit of advice from practice as I value your reasonable way of thinking and the way you run this show. .First of all ..UDM Pro, great choice. Yes, you can easily migrate from UDM. Before you will buy this 2.5Gb switches, use your 10Gb UDM port and juniper between your rooms to check the wire. In 99% scenarios, 10Gb works fine within 50-100feet range on Cat5e. Avoid this 2.5 substandard unless you sure 10Gb won't work or you need to do it for commercial purposes. Last but not least the best feature of UniFi is managing unification. That is why the best way is to keep all switches the same. I'm not saying it's bad to buy very cheap small 10Gb switch from Mikrotik, while waiting for a price drop but in my opinion, it would be the only exception. That is it...Keep up good work and I am happy you will finally get the internet you deserve. I personally love my Fios Gigabit and losing breath when leaving home and seeing bars of LTE dropping on the phone. At first I wanted to shame 2Gb decision over 1Gb but then I noticed 1Gb/35Mb DL/UL ratio. I understand Cable has to be unsynchronous but they should offer 1GB/100Mb at least... so shame Comcast

Lon solid idea, I have one suggestion. Do not buy the Aqantia 5gb adapters for the editing rig. Both windows and Mac do not like the current drivers. I have about 8 of the Asus XG-C100C models that use the same NIC and cannot get the original throughput. Sometimes they out right drop connection and I have to reinstall drivers until they work again. I would suggest getting the Intel X550-2 card instead. Its always on eBay for about $150-250. You can also use the second slot for direct 10gb connection to any other machine or teaming/trunking. Totally worth the money for no headaches. Good luck!

Lon, would you like to consider getting pfsense router? You could build one using a computer which has 10gig ports or you can buy appliances made by Netgate. Netgate SG7100 May work best for you. Not only will this allow you to utilise the 2 gig connection, you will also be able to manage your firewall more powerfully.

Before you go upgrading your local network, I would be testing real-world speeds over the connection from the Juniper before sinking money into bigger pipelines locally that you may not even get to saturate once you're past Comcast's network edge, let alone deep into the bowels of the interwebs. Obviously 2Gbps only applies inside Comcast; once you leave their network anything goes. If the routers and data lines to your most important real-world destinations can't provide bandwidth above your local network bottleneck, there's no point in upgrading locally, well unless local transfer speeds are that important to you to justify the cost.
Regarding the cat5e up to 2.5-5Gbps, that's going to be dependent on the cable run lengths and how well they were installed. I assume they at least used solid cable. But if they used high quality cables or not, how low the crosstalk is, if they observed bend radii, If they're shielded or how close to potential EMI sources they are, who knows. But at least you can test this out point to point with the thunderbolt adapters you mentioned.

We went to upgrade on Verizon fios (Fios is Moca compatible) to 1 gig, turns out your modem(actually router) needs to be next to the box they install, (The box is identified as the ONT) unfortunately the box I as I mentioned in the basement, and the router was in my study. I had told them that and they said, "No Problem"... "We'll send you a self install kit!". No one could/would tell me what the self install kit was. It's a six foot ethernet cable to attach my router on the second floor to the ONT box in the basement. I called tech support (on a weekend..........) and after talking to the person they scheduled a tech to come out to the house. (after triple checking no one in the house was running a fever or had the corona virus). He show s up and I asked him if they had explained the issue to him. All he said was that I had an issue with my cable and they sent him out. So finally after talking to him and finding out the above information about how the hook up works, I was told I could rent another wireless router (Moca) for the upstairs and move the router downstairs to the basement, Oooor drill holes in my house myself to run ethernet from the ONT in the basement to my study upstairs. (in all fairness he said he could hook me up with 100 feet of ethernet so I could do it myself). Nice guy very informative. I said thanks but I'm canceling my order, they should have told me this when they offered me the package. Any ways... to make a long story longer, I could buy a Moca compatible wireless extender for upstairs with ethernet out, move my router downstairs into the basement and wire it in, so I might still do that. But we had fios installed like 10 years ago, most of the stuff running from the pole to the house should be replaced as well as the antique ONT in my basement. But I guess they don't care once it's installed. Still, I listen to Lon's xfinity issues and... well .. I don't feel so bad. ;)

Why 4K?? Your fans watching at home, even if they have a 4K television for watching TH-cam, could still be dealing with the Comcast data limits. Watching a 4K video of your reviews won't add anything important over a 1080p image will it? Your bookshelf behind you may be clearer, or we may be able to see thread designs on your shirts easier. For those of us that download a lot of content and hit, or get close to hitting, the Comcast limit each month, LonTV may end up being removed from my subscription list just in case. :(
I get that broadcasting in 4K is cool. A coolness factor is always a part of making decisions in my life too. But I think 4K videos of reviewing products may be one of those things that you're doing because you can but will have unintended consequences for your fans.
Maybe make a few, see what it does, and then go back to 1080 or 720?

I work now from home using VPN with pretty intensive AutoCAD usage and almost like "being there". Comcast's service is Metro Ethernet whereas AT&T and most other providers which are typically PON. Metro Ethernet is a much more expensive service to operate and $300 is actually a steal for that 2G/2G over such a connection. The benefit that Metro Ethernet provides is that it's a dedicated line all the way back to Comcast, you're not sharing bandwidth with anyone vs PON which is shared.

The $300/mo is the *introductory* price. I bet it doubles after that period ends.

For 2 gigabits, you are paying $299/mth? This is insanely expensive!!!
Fwiw, i live in France and my ISP is named Free. I pay 40 euros par months for 2.5 gigabits up and 2 gigabits down. This also includes other services (phone, cell phone, OTP box and more).
Price in France are cheap because of the intense competition between the 4 fibre providers (Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free).

Yep... we pay a high price for a lack of a competitive marketplace

It's because it's Metro Ethernet, what you're getting in France I would bet $100 is a PON connection which is a shared fiber connection between you and however many other people are on your local OLT. Metro Ethernet is an enterprise service and is a dedicated line with only your traffic on it piped directly to Comcast, and in the enterprise space only $300 for such a service is a steal. One of my father's old employers (not mentioned for privacy) would not have believed it if you told them you could get a 2G/2G Metro Ethernet connection for $300.
The price has nothing to do with competition and everything to do with the expense of offering the service. I live in an area with at least 3 fiber providers, Comcast's Gigabit Pro being one of them. They still charge $300 here as they do everywhere else.

Comcast will overcharge you for a slow connection.. Spectrum offers 200 Mbs for low price.

You won't get it.......I had to wait 5 1/2 years. I had to pay 10k, I stripped and treated my own telephone poles. But it's only 40 bucks a month for 2.5gb down 1 gb up. From a mom and pop ISP here.
