I used to be able to see 10 or more varieties of birds, many migratory in my yard seasononally. Once the council allowed all trees removed from residential properties new owners cleared trees. I now have a few bees, 1 or two butterflies annually and a few birds that do visit my native garden. My trees used to buzz with honey bees during the day then flying foxes nightly. . I'm so very sad. My new neighbors took out 2 of the Melaluca quinquenervias that were used by possums and other wildlife. The reason they removed them was because butcher birds used the trees for nesting and raising young. All because the woman doesn't like birds. Every year the butcher birds would leave the fledgling with me as i worked in the garden the babies by my side. Across the street more trees removed because their trees had hollows where possums lived which caused their dogs to bark. possums had hollows in the neighborhood trees as did lorikeet etc. My street is bare. The electricity companies have compounded this problem hacking trees in a manner that causes street trees to topple in storms. Do they do it on purpose.

That is a very sad story Vali. I hope a member of our online community can share a story where their neighbours have made the opposite happen - a bare environment has become a thriving oasis for Australian plants and animals.

I'm with you. It's sad to see big trees go, and not always for valid reasons. I tell people that we don't have the right to remove 40=50 ft high trees. We are only custodians of the land. But such sentiments are not widely held and if you look in many of the new developments you'll hardly find any tall trees. Just blocks of sand. I'm unashamedly a tree hugger. 🤣🤣💕🙏

That's sad... Who doesn't like birds?! You obviously had a wonderful eco system happening, which enriches your garden & you. We purchased a small acreage, the owner cut or ringbarked every tree as he "can't stand trees",. luckily he left all the one's along the creek, as he couldn't get his machinery there.
There wasn't a fly, let alone birds , bees or insects. I have spent the last 6 years planting native & exoric trees, shrubs, flowers, vegie garden, orchard & the bird/wildlife that we have now is amazing, we too, lived in a neighbourhood like yours in which ppl preferred concrete to greenery. I feel your pain & it's frustrating that ppl don't realise how important & beneficial to both wildlife & us these systems are
