  • Good morning you awesome millennial camera geeks! Today I present to you a camera that anyone can find and afford. But this is not just any ordinary camera. This is a camera that broke the camera world internet in 2004. A 6.1mp DSLR that can take photos as good or better than the highly regarded Epson R-D1 or Nikon D100. A camera that has far higher specs than those two Camera Legends. And yet it is a camera that ANYONE can find or afford today. A Camera Legend in its own right, today's featured camera is the Nikon D70!
In this video, you'll see what makes the D70 so great even in today's world. And you'll see how this camera reveals one major flaw about Human Nature :-(
If you need batteries for your D70 try this:

If you found this video helpful, don't forget to LIKE COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE!! The few seconds it takes for you to do that will help this channel grow so we can bring you more of the very best Camera Legends of all time, plus the stories behind them!
Thanks for watching and I appreciate your support!

Just FYI thanks to one of our commenters I would like to tell you guys that many of the images presented here do not represent the best possible files you can get from the D70.
These images are 99 percent from the period 2005-2009 and were resized for places like Flickr. If you see some compression or softness it's because of that. The original files were backed up to a laptop hard drive which was sadly damaged a long time ago and I can no longer access the original files. However I presented these images because they are some of my best work with the camera. Just know that the Nikon D70 is capable of higher quality files.

I never owned one, but given that it's a CCD and the same D100 sensor, I stand behind it👍 You are so right about the human nature, I used to embody this flaw! Then, I lost everything one day and learned a very hard lesson. I've been back on my feet since then, but the hardship taught me an extremely harsh lesson. Now, I'm a sucker for a bargain! I literally scan used items sites, flee markets, and garage sales for a good bargain, and I saved thousands of dollars by doing so! It's a mental barrier, and once you break it, you'll be surprised how much more money you end up having on you!

I had the D70 and the D70S. Followed those up with the Nikon D200 (which I still have and use!). All three have a CCD sensor. Without question the D200 is a much better camera in every way. Today you can get the D200 in the $100 to $200 range. But to be honest, I have had CMOS sensor cameras (e.g. Nikon D3X) that gave me more beautiful, cinematic images than the three aforementioned cameras. Based on my personal experience, I don't buy into the mythology surrounding CCD sensors.

I totally agree with you on CCD vs CMOS! It might seem like I'm pushing CCD but I love both and back in the day I don't recall people fighting about it as much. In the case of the D70 that could be a selling point for some people so that's why I emphasized it

Bernard, I wish I could shake your hand! LOVE this comment! All cameras you mentioned are good. I can remember the ‘hype’ and anticipation surrounding the announcement and pre release of the D200. I do believe it was one of the most anticipated and sought after Cams of its day?! Hell, one couldn’t get it for 6-8 months, or something like that? I picked up a really clean used copy number of Years ago, and will probably never sell it. The playback and menu system a little archaic, compared with newer Nikon s. The D200 was/ is capable of making some great photos, but I prefer the files from my D300 more. Both the D200 and D300 were some of the best ergonomic designs. I’d even go as far as saying I like the feel of the D300 in my hand, compared to my D500! 😯 Yeah I ran on and didn’t paragraph myself, oh well. Stay safe and Happy Shooting!

Love your channel Sam! My hack for old sticky Nikons is to give them a proper scrub with a cloth and nail polish. This removes the decayed stickiness and leaves a very smooth grip after. I've done this with my D100, D50, and recent €30 D70s 😎

I loved my d70 back in the days and even more the d50 (smaller lighter) and had it with me a lot. I used mostly prime lenses like Nikkor 50/1.4 af, the 20/2.8 af and Sigma 24/1.8. I used my Canon 5D with the 40mm f2.8 some weeks ago like I promised and it reminded me about the D70 - but I think people react a little different to bigger cameras now than back in 2005 when shooting in public..? I think the Nikon D70 had a nice feel to it and the flash synch 1/500 was nice but I don't know about the CCD thing but it did give nice files. If you are someone that have never shot DSLR then try it, you may like it. And there are a lot of cheap used Nikon lenses out there.

Pentax istD, Pentax istDS, Nikon D40, D100 are 4 cameras with the 6mpxl Sony sensor that I have used and there is definitely something special about the images. I really think it's the CCD sensor. The Pentax 10D has a 10mpxl CCD sensor and the results are as good or better.
And forget about the absolutely awesome M8! When I look at the DPreview galleries from Leica cameras, I still think the M8 images are the most impressive. It's unfortunate that CCD sensors are technologically limited and cannot achieve the low light performance that CMOS sensors can. Imagine if someday the engineers (a profession near and dear to me!) find a way to break that limit and some manufacturer comes out with camera that sports a full frame 60mpxl CCD sensor!!! :-))

I have one of these. I bought it just after the release and although I carried it with me on five continents and it took a lot of beating, it still looks like new. They were making cameras in different ways, back then... I haven't used it in years, because of the low resolution... Nowadays, when phones normally brag about taking 50+ megapixels pictures and people do not understand resolution and quality, some of my clients smirk even about my 36 Mpix full frame photos. Sure, I can use the D70 for my nature projects, but there are only so many cameras I can carry...

Actually the 10mp Nikon cameras are also great I believe the 10mp DSLRs are also CCD sensors but the 12mp cameras like the D300 also had great image quality. • @cameralegend1033

The D200 is a tremendous bargain at $50! In the case of the D70 I'm comparing it to the Epson R-D1 and D100 because those two cameras share the same sensor and I believe the D70's sensor to be closely related. The point is to show how much of a bargain you can get from a $30 camera when compared to a $3000 camera like the R-D1. But you're right if you can find a D200 for $50 it's an even better bargain! Thanks for your comments.

    • @cameralegend1033
      @cameralegend1033  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for reminding me of a camera problem that was a bigger deal back in the days of the D70! Honestly I do not know the fix unfortunately. I remember there was a Nikon program which you could use, in conjunction with your camera that could map out the dead pixels but I can't remember the name of the program.
At any rate, it may have been such an old software that it's unlikely to work on your modern computer. The dead pixel problem usually arises from long exposures or time lapse photography but not always. There's always a chance that the pixels could disappear with prolonged use. Unless it's really in a bothersome area of the sensor, I wouldn't worry about it much. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

CCD have much higher noise than CMOS sensors, but are otherwise very capable in the high quality image department. I had an old Fuji six megapixel, and I currently have a Nikon D7100. I love the detail of my Nikon images, but I really hate the colors. Fuji absolutely has a sort of film-like quality, which is understandable since Fuji has long been a film manufacturer, and the colors are far more palatable. I'd get one of the new Fuji medium format digital cameras if I could afford it, but I'll surely settle for one of the very fine DX model cameras. CCD models also eat your camera batteries, but that's a rather small complaint as far as I'm concerned. But for the time being, until I can manage it, I will settle for my very competent Nikon D7100.
Far from perfect, but damn well close enough.
One thing I love about my OLD Fuji camera was the magnesium alloy body.
Who in this day and age makes camera bodies as seriously TOUGH as those of Fuji camera bodies? I get the feeling I could almost use some of them as hokey pucks.

@@amermeleitor - I suppose it's fair to say that the noise is ALWAYS there, but it's simply not very noticeable in some cases. For example, when you dial down your ISO setting as low as possible. I think the reasons for manufacturers changing from CCD to CMOS have maybe changed somewhat over the years. For example, it seems like it was always much more expensive to create a CCD compared to a CMOS sensor. And which company doesn't want a higher profit margin? However, oddly enough, some manufacturers still use a CCD, such as premium brands like Leica.
I have a Nikon D7100 - CMOS. And I had an old Fuji S2 and then an S3 - CCD.
I surely liked the rendition from my Fuji cameras, but it may have far more to do with other factors which have very little to do with the type of sensor. The only thing I didn't like is that my Fuji cameras had a voracious appetite for batteries. Photographing a normal size wedding job might have required 3 full sets of freshly charged AA batteries to safely finish the job.

D100 was an over hyped plastic piece of crap, juss sayin’. There are fanboys out there that will defend their beloved 100’s and I’M sure will attack me on this. However, there are many out there that will concur with me. And I LIKE Nikon, so am not bashing on the brand. The D70/ 70s were great cameras, and the d90 and d300 were great as well. Peace

Haha I appreciate someone who speaks their mind! 😂 That said, I honestly think the poor D100 was an average performer that was almost relegated to obscurity but was saved by its "same sensor" relationship with the Epson R-D1. That's why I made this video because the D70 actually has a better performing sensor than those two cameras, both of which have been over hyped. I love the R-D1 but I admit the D70 sensor is better.

Why spend so much time with the introduction on the model... Just start the video with the model name...

Thanks for your input and I believe you're right! Honestly I already know that not a lot of people have the patience but I thought it was important to set the narrative so that people know what they're getting for $30 bucks. If I hadn't used the Epson R-D1 or Nikon D100 comparison I don't think people would realize what a bargain this camera is. Again, appreciate the input thanks!

CCD sensors were miserable failures. All they were good for was attracting dust--which they did in large quantities.

I wouldn't say they were miserable failures but I can agree that they were dust magnets 😂
