    On the battery drain issue : I had the same problem very regularly with another Kobo model, and as it turned out this was due to the device being very sensitive to magnets. The (Kobo!) cover I had was magnetic and it turned out it was this cover that drained the battery overnight. I removed the cover and never had the issue again (using a soft pouch now to protect the reader). I reported the issue to Kobo, especially since it the magnetic cover was a Kobo product. I received a vague and somewhat deflective confirmation from their customer service that this was indeed an issue with that model, but no compensation was forthcoming.

      Really useful to know 👍. Although I didn’t change the cover the battery issue which would be a deal breaker if it continued to drain did stop being an issue 😊.
      Thank you for taking the time to put this message out there.

    great review, i am looking for a device in this price range primarily for note taking. Has there been any improvements to the software since your review and if not is there another device you recommend. I would love the RM2 but it is so pricey

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but I would consider an amazon scribe. They are starting to be delivered in early December. It might not be as good but I suspect it will be better, but I at the margin prefer the kindle echo system.
      However, in about a week people will start to have them in hand to review. I think mine is supposed to come around the 1st December.
      But as it stands the Elipsa is a decent device, but....... will Amazon's be better.
      I hope that helps. 😊

    Hey mate, would you recommend this model or the Supernote A5X? Cheers!

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Vincent, it's frustrating to give you this response because I prefer the Kobo, I think the feel of the device UI and the backlight are the reason. However, the Supernote seems to have the more reliable dialled in software so I feel like the sensible recommendation is to go for the Supernote unless over 80% of the reason for getting the device is reading. Please feel free to come back if you have any questions as I know that wasn't the clearest answer.

    You mention that the Elipsa has a backlight. Isn't it a front light? It is the front light that helps ease the eye strain.

      Thanks Richard 👍👍👍👍, you are absolutely right. Thank you for pointing it out and making this comment 🤓.

    Can you recommend this one or the Note Air? Have to admit that the Note air looks prettier 😅

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The note air is the more comprehensive device, and as of now the software works better too. However it is also a more expensive device. Today if money is not an issue I would say the Note Air, with the caveat that for me I would get a screen protector to improve the writing experience.
      I hope that over the coming months Kobo improve the software enough that I can give a different answer. I hope that helps 👍.

    Thank you, a very useful review. Right to the point in every aspect. After long years of use, my Sony PRS-T2 died and I was searching for another device, but with a much larger screen this time, even larger than my first eReader (Irex Iliad) and with note taking capability. Comparing a lot of devices your review helped me to decide.
    Just a minor question (I've just ordered the Kobo Elipsa). In other reviews they say you can only use the Kobo pen for this device, but you mentioned other compatible pens. Is there any way to know in advance if a pen would work with Kobo Elipsa? (Sorry for my English I'm not a native)

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Alejandro, your English reads well. Yes, I heard the same about pens before I got the device. The technology it uses for pens is microsoft pen protocol (MPP), so any pen that supports that will work on the Kobo. There a are a lot of options. 👍
      I hope you enjoy the device when you get it 😊

    If I have some spelling mistakes while writing, will it be corrected or will it be saved as is?
    Thanks in advance

    I love your reviews! What do you think of kobo sage?

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. So I don't own the sage, but it looks cool. However, I would only get it if it was the right size e-Reader for you. I keep on going back to Elipsa, and Kobo's writing experience is just not there yet. They are the best at the reading experience but the worst at the writing experience. For short notes, it's fine for a note-taking device; it's not. I hope that helps 😊👍.

    Can you set highlights in pdf files that links directly to certain notes or notebooks?

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, unfortunately not. You are very limited to what you can do in a PDF, write on it, highlight and erase your writing and highlights. That's not to take away from it's a very nice PDF reader and pinch to zoom works well too. I hope that helps 👍

  • @jvpateluk

    Hi - quick question wrt the browser. Can you download files with it to then view them on the device?
    Say downloading a pdf via OneDrive's or Google Drive's web interfaces? And once downloaded can the files be managed -- so moved around and arranged within the device's storage system?
    Thanks

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jayesh, the answer is sort of. The way you can manage files easiest in my experience is via Dropbox, a free account gives you a decent amount of storage. You can't use OneDrive or Google Drive. When on the device the file management isn't great but you can filter say only show Dropbox files and you can sort those files by for example most recent.
      It's not a system that would stand up to hundreds of files to manage but it does actually work well for several tens of files.
      What is particularly good is when you edit a file it automatically uploads the edits to Dropbox (very useful).
      I hope that helps 👍

    You showed surface pen but did not show how it writes. You did not touch on the anti-aliasing. I understand OCR is good in this. But does not have search function.
    I heard some where else the display is better than every other e-reader and so is he refresh rate.

    • @AlexSamuels
      @AlexSamuels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Re writing I do show it in this video th-cam.com/video/Tpgk1zqjsF8/w-d-xo.html.
      The ocr is ok but to be honest because the writing experience is ok, I rarely write on it.
      The screen is nice and probably the best of any of the e-ink devices I have but not so such better that you would choose the Kobo just because of the screen.
      I love this device, but I would defiantly not get it to write on all day long, now to read on all day long is a different story 👍.
      Thanks for the comment.

      Yeah that’s sad in my country too, I was looking for primarily for an e-reader you can annotate on not that I’m going to heavily use it as a note taking app but I heavily annotate on ebooks for school and i realized that there’s no app dedicated for it, so I might need an e-reader that note taking isn’t a primary thing but a secondary thing. (Primarily for reading and just annotate on the side)
      I might just get a kobo libra instead, not the best, but I don’t want to pay for a heavy cost of international shipping fees.
      Edit: Going to get kindle instead kobo here is too overpriced

      @@sophiagonzales8974 atleast you have kobo at your place. My country only provides Amazon kindle. I had to borrow my friends kindle (base variant) time to time just to enjoy the feel of it and read offcourse. I really wanted to buy an note taking ereader to reduce the amount of books I carry from place to place but due to my countries high import taxes (almost 80%). I would have empty my one year allowance.
