2 years before this, in December 1987, I went on a 10 mile training run with Mark Allen through the horse trails of Rancho Santa Fe, California. It was epic. Mark is so incredibly powerful you just don’t know. Afterwards, I had breakfast with my Dad, Mark Allen, & Julie Moss at a little place which is now called Zel’s Del Mar, I think back then it was called the Del Mar Cafe. It was less than 100 feet away from Scott Tinley’s store called Tinley. I realize now how lucky and grateful I was to experience those things. I also got to ride with Emilio DeSoto, and I swam at the same pool as Allen, DeSoto and Tinley. I’m not a good swimmer, I trained in the medium lanes. Thanks for reading this. And Mark, I’m so glad you won. Dave, you’re rad too.
How fortunate you were then. You were at the epicenter of triathlon during what I consider was the sports golden period, mainly pre-World Triathlon Corp ownership of Ironman and pre-USA Triathlon focus on the Olympics. I miss the those days,
Thank you for posting this video! Means lots to me since this race being my first Kona Ironman World Championship l did. I was just getting ready to run on the Queen K during the marathon when I saw Mark & Dave running on the opposite direction heading towards the finish with under 2 miles to go. Was an Incredible site to see. Will always remember this race! 🏊♀️ 🚲 🏃♀️ 🇺🇸👍
The Greatest Day in the History of Triathlon. There will never be another Day like it ever again. Rest In Peace Dick and Rick Hoyt
I was lucky to be racing there that day. Great day. Amazing dual by Dave and Mark.
This event in 1989 convinced me that I was going to be a triathlete. Nearly 30 years later I'm still a part of it.
I enjoyed this video, even the commercials. The 80s, the good old days!

You're welcome, Art. Glad you enjoyed it! That was an incredible front row seat you had to see The Man and The Grip battle on the Queen K.
That is my memory as well. Seeing Mark about 100 meters ahead of Dave just after turning onto Queen K. Our times must have been similar.
Great VHS copy with the original commercials. I'm from the area, so the weather alert from channel 7 and the Mel Farr commercial was so cool.
RIP.
LEGEND.
MR DICK HOYT.
