I guess the drafting rules were different back then.
Watched this on my 13” tv/vcr combo countless times to prep for my first IM back in 1999 🎉
I watched this many times on the trainer back in the day. Thank you for posting this ❤
You're welcome. RIP Dick and Rick.
2 years before this, in December 1987, I went on a 10 mile training run with Mark Allen through the horse trails of Rancho Santa Fe, California. It was epic. Mark is so incredibly powerful you just don’t know. Afterwards, I had breakfast with my Dad, Mark Allen, & Julie Moss at a little place which is now called Zel’s Del Mar, I think back then it was called the Del Mar Cafe. It was less than 100 feet away from Scott Tinley’s store called Tinley. I realize now how lucky and grateful I was to experience those things. I also got to ride with Emilio DeSoto, and I swam at the same pool as Allen, DeSoto and Tinley. I’m not a good swimmer, I trained in the medium lanes. Thanks for reading this. And Mark, I’m so glad you won. Dave, you’re rad too.
How fortunate you were then. You were at the epicenter of triathlon during what I consider was the sports golden period, mainly pre-World Triathlon Corp ownership of Ironman and pre-USA Triathlon focus on the Olympics. I miss the those days,
@@vaultofpiscismagnus4884 - Thanks for replying. Yes, those were some really great days!
The Greatest Day in the History of Triathlon. There will never be another Day like it ever again. Rest In Peace Dick and Rick Hoyt
지금은 이런 감동이 있는 피니시가 점점 사라져서 아쉽다. 보급도 너무 많고, 코스도 쉬워지고, 훈련도 너무 잘 하고.
Oh to be in 1998, before the definition of "Ironman" came to include half-ironman. The blood doping was rampant, on the other hand. Did my first IMC in 2001. The race; such as it is today is something i barely recognize and not so sure that it appeals. A shame. Back in the nineties and aughts; this was a gem of an event. A spectacle. Magical.
Seems so ironic in hindsight knowing Jurgen was doped to the gills.
i think its historic moment ffor humanmankind.thank s for posting
Thanks for uploading! Love any videos from muncie in the 80s or 90s
You're welcome. One of the best races in the Midwest back when races were fewer and farther between. I raced Muncie half Ironman 13 times from 1990 to the early 00s. Lots of great memories.
@@hmu6300 that’s amazing! I played in the Gus Mackers during this time! Wish more things like this existed now.
Mark Allen on a Huffy, LOL.
When I did Ironman Regensburg in 2011, I saw Jurgen Zack just sat there casually on a bench, clapping the runners along. Surreal when you grew-up watch these 'idols'.
Best race ever. Thanx for upload!

Wow. Hawaii is the youngest island. Not oldest.
The transition zones are chaotic and disorganized
Memories for a lifetime! Thanks Penticton.
Scott Molina underrated ! KEN GLAH UNDERATED THESE GUYS MADE THE SPORT ALONG WITH TINLEY ALLEN AND SCOTT THIS KIDS IS REAL TRIATHLON! They paved the way for the sport!
20:22 before I could swim or bike well
Got to love the commercials from 93. Especially the Reebok commercial that said "No steroids" while showing Mark McGuire.
Truth😂
I was waiting to see me. Not high enough in the rankings. Finished in 11hrs 29mins. 274th
We all saw you in the overhead mass start swim footage. We just didn't know it was you. Seriously, still an impressive time. Congrats.
That was awesome! Watching Ironman ‘86 from point of view perspective! Loved it!
Tell me they have padding on those speedos 😂. Great video
I was lucky to be racing there that day. Great day. Amazing dual by Dave and Mark.
RIP. LEGEND. MR DICK HOYT. thank you Sir.
I was there! unforgettable experience. still feel the vibe, energy and the absolute terror of not finishing. all went well. something I've always wanted to do again.
Love triathlon, but loving the old TV commercials. Some are almost as painful as the last few miles of an Ironman.
53:29 name that tune
15:51...a long, looonnng day
Thank you for sharing this video. I did my first Kona Ironman the following year in 1989 and got to witness Mark & Dave battle it out on the course. 🏊♀️ 🚲 🏃♀️ 🇺🇸
Thank you for posting this video! Means lots to me since this race being my first Kona Ironman World Championship l did. I was just getting ready to run on the Queen K during the marathon when I saw Mark & Dave running on the opposite direction heading towards the finish with under 2 miles to go. Was an Incredible site to see. Will always remember this race! 🏊♀️ 🚲 🏃♀️ 🇺🇸👍
You're welcome, Art. Glad you enjoyed it! That was an incredible front row seat you had to see The Man and The Grip battle on the Queen K.
That is my memory as well. Seeing Mark about 100 meters ahead of Dave just after turning onto Queen K. Our times must have been similar.
13:30 😂😂😂
Good video.
I am only 11min in and I am stoked! Awesome 90s sport, classic commercials what more could you want?
私もこのレース参加し完走しました❗414位いい思い出です‼️
Great coverage. Excellent video and editing.
Happy 20 years Peter Reid.
Insane kick at the end, the lead pack at T2 looked like there would be more juxtaposition for leader but Chtistian & Mark just dropped everyone. Much love to Welch tho love that spirit, plus he says it's okay to drink beer so I like him more. What boggles me is how P. Kiuru broke the entire wheel 🙃🤔🤔
My grandfather died during this Triathlon. I can give you all his identification number. It was 4217. He died of Cardiac Arrest.
Great VHS copy with the original commercials. I'm from the area, so the weather alert from channel 7 and the Mel Farr commercial was so cool.
commercials were the best part
me one!
Ironman was so cool.
OMG THIS IS AMAZING! Liggett commentsted the Inaugural?! GGGAAAHHHH! I NEVER KNEW!Ive been a: Sherpa, a Volunteer, and an Entrant w a DNF @ IMLP since 2001! I LUV LP & IMLP. I’ll be honest tho- WE NEED THE MASS START BACK! Aside from the Finish Line...? the Mass Start is the MOST EXCITING MOMENT of IM! Its BEAUTIFUL! IT MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME!!!Unf my DNF @ IMLP happened in 2013- the 1st year they switched to “rolling start”- which is not ONLY anticlimactic- but it was REALLY DANGEROUS. I swim slow. So when the fatsties were starting Loop #2...I got CLOBBERED for OVER AN HOUR. I couldnt breathe or swim. Rescue ppl couldnt even SEE me bc it was too congested. The “rolling start” is a DISASTER! LET US WEED IT OUT” I was flailing n choking n terrified (AND im a CONFIDENT swimmer). After YEARS of being a fan, Sharpa, Volunteer, and a “wanna be” IMLP finisher- I was taken down w hypothermia after the swim (I made the cutoff- but the med team wouldnt let me continue)Call Indeed Spa?Anyway sooo off topic. But I am STILL N WILL ALWAYS B A DIE HARD FAM SHERPAN VOLUNTEER @ IMLP N LUV THIS FOOTAGE!!!
This event in 1989 convinced me that I was going to be a triathlete. Nearly 30 years later I'm still a part of it.
Good Ol' EPO

Are you referring to AG Kathy Hughes featured around 1:00:00?
Vault of Piscis Magnus I was bookmarking the time I had to stop watching. Im going to finish it now. Thanks for the upload. Im watching all the years ironmans until this years.
You're very welcome. I'm happy that you and others are able to enjoy these recordings. I asked only because I know Kathy and grew up in that town. I thought that if you know her, we might have other friends in common. Good luck with your training and racing!
Vault of Piscis Magnus you grew up in Marshall? Nice! I grew up in south bend. What happened to Kathy? And are you on Facebook?
Was there too in the middle of the pack! Was a cooler day than 87 I remember. First time I've actually have seen the race coverage. Thanks for sharing this.
You're welcome. I'm glad you found it here. Man, it was almost 30 years ago!
Thanks for sharing... I was there !! In the middle of the pack... LoL
But you were there!
@ron123ron Best possible comment!
