    We run two cross connected sea chests which work well. Several builders (including, I'm told, Fedship) will now extend the top of the sea chest above the water line for full access even on the water.

    Aluminium work hardens/ age hardens. If you need to bend aluminium without cracking it, obtain the cheapest hard white soap and scribble with it on one side of the aluminium. (used as a temperature indicator) On the other side, heat up the aluminium with a blow torch until the soap turns brown, then quench the aluminium. This will aneal the Aluminium allowing it to be bent without cracking.
    I feel for you and the aluminium rot.

    I liked the blue 🤣🤣🤣
    I worked at the Alcan smelter in Kitimat for a few years. Company colors were blue and white with a sort of light green strip. The boat that went to Kemano was a 78 foot aluminum craft painted blue and white so I guess I was getting a bit nostalgic.

    For welding in the area of your gasoline tanks, if you open the tank and fill all the air space with shielding gas from your welder then close it back up you can weld all you want with no fires or explosions... supposedly... No oxygen = no fire. I wouldn't trust it personally but I have witnessed a guy weld up a pinhole in a car gas tank using that method and it worked for him

    • @OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
      @OnboardTangaroaSeatrial  22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Definitely not for me. Welding near any fuel tank terrifies me. When we used to work on yachts we had a guy come in to do a tank repair and he did just that. Worked like a charm. It was a diesel tank though, not gasoline.

    Get yourselves a C02 fire extinguisher.
    They work really well for stuff you don't want that powder all over.
    We keep them in electrical rooms here. And the powder does not gum up the extinguisher valve. Ie they are *not* 1 time use.
    Just be careful in confined spaces and using large amounts of CO2...

    • @OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
      @OnboardTangaroaSeatrial  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The powder was definitely messy. Took a bit of time to clean it all out. Our main large extinguishers are CO2. We will likely look into some hand extinguishers for that as well. Unfortunately all spaces on a boat are confined so CO2 is a bit scary.

    Like the job you are doing, that boat has great lines . As for bottom paint, sailboats will often alternate paint colours ( grey, red, green, black, etc...) in any order and the reason is so they know how much paint is left before next repaint,

    This is after the fact but suggest you check out Element fire extinguishers. They are really effective (personal experience) and leave no residue or toxic fumes and are light and quickly deployable. There are various YT postings. That said, they're single-use and not yet Transport Canada approved, which means you need to keep conventional extinguishers aboard for inspection. I keep them on standby in my home and cars. Best wishes and HNY from Nanaimo.

    I was thinking. 🤔 That aft platform with the anchor well and the two build in gasoline tanks, on each end, yeah?
    On your next haul-out. Why not cut that platform completely off? Using a cutting disk or saws all. Something thats non flammable.
    Then you can design a new platform and build it when funds are available.

      We have thought about it at times. It is a very large expense and honestly, the boat maneuvers with the engines quite well and Janis and I have a lot of experience working dock lines to assist in docking and such. We don't go to the dock often but we haven't had any issues in 5 years. It's more of a nice to have vs a requirement for us and just hasn't justified the expense yet.

    I see that you are struggling with wind problems when welding. At the risk of teaching grandmother to suck eggs I assume that you know that you can weld aluminum with oxi/acetylene. This is how I learned before the days of tig and mig. The trick is using the correct rods which have to be compatible with the base alloy. We use to get around this by using an off cut of the base material plus it solved the wind problem.

    The Steamship inspection which you guys dont have to have as you are a pleasure craft. The regulations got changed many years ago made "doubler" plates not allowed. If your vessel has patches welded over the original hull plating. It has to be removed the damaged hull plating removed and replaced. This regulation has taken quite a few vessels out of commercial service. Its cost the owner thousand to 10s of thousands to do the work to bring the vessel up to standards or scrap the boat. They can re-register the boat as a pleasure craft. They can continue to use the boat but not for commercial use. If the coast guard catches you using it for commercial use you are in deep sh*t. I can imagine getting the layers of old antifoul and barrier coat off was a pain in the a**. A sand blast the sand would bounce off of ablative paint. It was good you plugged up old thru hulls. Finding that corroded hole even better. How many owners did Tangaroa have over the years it almost seems like she sat for many years and neglected.
