I've been writing music for a long time but I'm new to actually engineering and mixing. I've instinctually done this since I first started. Glad to see it's an actual technique that pros use!
This is something I've been doing since like 2017. I would tell my engineer and he wasn't up on it. But I think this is so important for mixing and mastering. Especially mastering.
This is great advice.. and something I really need to do in my sessions. I need to sit down and build a list of tracks that I like sonically and build a template. Also I listened to your weekly track and it sounds amazing!!! I love what your doing with vocals and how it just fits like glue in the mix.
man i could not agree with this more. not only should everyone use a reference track, but you should reference from your own speakers/set up. it will never be exactly the same but thats what makes your tune yours. LOVE the content devvon, keep it up.
I just Started To do Reference Mixing, and damn man My Mixed Now sound way more dope than Before, It,s true Reference mixing is Extremely Important, now that I am happy with the results, i dont think i will ever mix without reference again..
Enigeer for 20 years and I definitely agree!! . biggest issue nowadays (not a problem back in the 2000's) is actually getting access to wave files (CD)and not the mp3 version (streaming downloads). The public consumes music on the go 99% of the time. I went to Target last year when I was mastering a project and I bought the physical copy of The Chronic and Migos Culture 2 CD's for reference. Using Ozone 9 I am able to dump audio in and pull up the "eq curve", etc. Check it out if u havent... #metypebeats #anystyleanygenre
If you want lossless sites like junodownload, or if you want to super level up your reference game, download the multitracks and reference each instrument
You do that post recording. Chances of you having the same mic, or mic tone as someone on the reference track is slim, so move closer to their sound via EQ's, compression, & post FX - making sure to go back and listen often so you know whether you're getting closer or further from the target sound.
I'm not so sure Avarage Joe hear enough analytically which things are problematic in his song. I suggest use multiband and eq and also compare mid and side, LUFS etc. But yeah reference is vital sure
Man, I was just about to comment and shout out that plugin. From tutorials it seems like a good one to use. I bought it a while back on sale and haven't used it yet. Slight production delay.
thank you for always demystifying the dope Topics! Please can we have proprer tutorial showing how you apply referencing track??? it will be very useful may God Bless you for all what you share with us in the name of Jesus Christ
What about reference mastering? I know they are both important, but would you say reference mixing or reference or mastering is more important if you had to choose one?
I say reference mixing over mastering unless a client wants their master to sound like a specific song when mastering other than that I don’t reference in mastering I just focus on what’s in front of me
He already said how to brotha. Use a professional track that you personally like, that has a similar feel & sound of the song you're creating/recording.
Horizun The Alien i have understood everything he said, but what i meant was if i dont have a specific song in mind that i can use for reference how can i then find one?
@@shansondeshinkolo817 I have heard some people use multiple reference tracks - if they don't have a single one that is completely similar, they find two or three that have specific characteristics that you're trying to get similar feeling elements from.. IE, drums and sub bass from one, vocals from another, I instrumental synths from the third... Ect. Whatever characteristics you want similarities to. That way you're not so focused on finding "that one that sounds similar enough" every time. Although if you do it that way, make sure you're not trying to mimic the entire mix of all of them, really focus on those specific elements that you're looking for from each of them..or you'll find yourself constantly readjusting the overall mix when you re-listen to the next one. Pick the target for each and work toward that goal! Another thing you could do is find an artist that may have similar sounds or elements to your song on pandora, and listen until you find a song with enough high level characteristics you want to work towards. Then download the song when you find a good one. Hope that helps, happy mixing bruv. 👽🎚️
The real problem is when you can't find the right reference song. I've been looking for the reference to one of my tracks yesterday, today and I couldn't find anything really similar.
Don't worry about finding the perfect fit, use three or more. One track might be bass heavy, another one might have brighter vocals so by comparing all three of them you can gauge your mix better.
One can skip audio engineering school and learn everything from your channel bro lol. Do you download your high quality reference songs from a streaming service such as Tidal?
I've been using reference tracks since right around the time CD's were created. I'm afraid youth today may find it hard to get their hands on CD quality audio to actually reference full quality audio. I will often buy CD's or download 44.1kHz/16 bit files of the tracks I want to use for referencing so I can have the full sonic quality to reference from. Using a compressed form like an MP3 to reference ain't quite the same. (Just my 2cents)
new version of how you process beat stems in relation too vocals? I know you got a lot of outboard gear so wondering if anything has changed. thanks Devvon!
Listen to this song today!! song.link/week2

One question my guy, do I use the reference track while mastering too??
I just Started To do Reference Mixing, and damn man My Mixed Now sound way more dope than Before, It,s true Reference mixing is Extremely Important, now that I am happy with the results, i dont think i will ever mix without reference again..

Can we still reference even if we are mixing a two track ?
Great information fellow alum!
Is there a decent priced plugin with which we can do references? Or should I say what is the best plugin to do references?
Kiian Kiiko there’s no plugin just download from iTunes
Thank You!
Hey. A quick question. When referencing do you need to match the tone of your mic to his mic sound too? If yes, what do you need to consider?
You do that post recording. Chances of you having the same mic, or mic tone as someone on the reference track is slim, so move closer to their sound via EQ's, compression, & post FX - making sure to go back and listen often so you know whether you're getting closer or further from the target sound.
Can you make a video on the process for writing lyrics

What about reference mastering? I know they are both important, but would you say reference mixing or reference or mastering is more important if you had to choose one?
Reference mixing, let someone professional master it in a better environment. They can't fix a bad mix, but they can elevate a good one
I say reference mixing over mastering unless a client wants their master to sound like a specific song when mastering other than that I don’t reference in mastering I just focus on what’s in front of me
