- LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) inadvertently handed out $2 billion in fraudulent pandemic payments, its director tells the 8 News Now Investigators, as thousands wait to plead their cases as to why they should be paid or keep the money the agency already gave them.

And the government wonders why citizens don’t trust the administration. This woman needs money. Any overpayment by the agency should come out of the state leaders pay check.
I feel bad for this lady. So, the takeaway is that instead of DETR taking their failure on the chin of paying out $2 billion in fraudulent payments and letting law enforcement take care of the fraudsters, they're getting through their backlog by denying legitimate unemployment claims.
She has never missed a meal and she recieved money that wasn't hers, why is ot Ok to take money that's not hers?
@@adamdelarozza1985 My feeling bad for her situation doesn't negate the fact that DETR is denying legitimate unemployment claims. She filed an appeal because she believes DETR is wrong and she's right. Also, people can be homeless and still eat food. So I'm not sure how whether she's missed a meal or not is relevant to the situation.

So, you're suggesting that she should've paid the $5,000 she was supposedly overpaid on her rent in advance. You must not live in Las Vegas. One-bedroom apartments are at a minimum of $1,000 a month. So, your suggestion would've meant she would've paid for 5 months in advance. Her payments ended in 2022. Clearly, that suggestion wouldn't have done anything.
@@JeremyWomack I use to live in N Las Vegas in my own house. Unless she's been in that parking lot for five months, that 5k would of helped her with keeping a roof over her head and time to look for another job, which are plentiful.
DETR needs to accept responsibility for their actions and waive all overpayments. You don't send billions in alleged overpayment only to demand it be given back years later. This woman clearly needed the help and DETR failed her.

I have a friend going through this now and still charging her $14K. Even with her being able to provide proof she went to work for a temp agency and got off unemployment. But they still coming after her after the appeal. She is now searching for an attorney she cannot afford to fight this case.
Have her contact Nevada Legal Services. It is for low income people. They helped me.

Technically, it’s not paying off student loans. It’s paying off the rip off interest being charged. Here’s a good explanation I saw somewhere:
“There's not actually money being spent to wipe away student loans. A student has $20,000 college debt and has paid $250 a month for 10 years. They have paid $30,000, but still have an outstanding balance of $15,000 on the school loans, due to the way the loans are written. The loan relief is saying - you've paid $10,000 more than your loan value, so we're discharging that remaining balance. The loaner of the $ already received their loan amount, plus interest. And 18 yr old old bowerers are ill prepared to understand the long term ranifications of these high interest loans. Better to forgive the remaining balance to allow their spending to help the economy. Like we did with banks.”

No they didnt just hand it out. I know people who were on appeal over a year. THEY kept it for scammers, friends and family and hotel workers. Anyone else had to wait or is still waiting or got put on a fake fraud case while they did what they did with the money

I gave up trying to reach them! I've been in the trades for 23 years and I filed to get help. I received it for a few months then it stopped! I received a letter shortly after saying I owed over $9,000. So I don't know what avenue or approach to take. I keep getting letters that I owe. I've sent them several faxes of the appropriate information they needed or wanted to verify my status and never heard from them. This was about two years ago. I have been laid off since but I haven't filed because it's impossible to go into a local branch to discuss the matter which I find absolutely absurd!!!!

I lost my job in November and I look EVERYDAY! 10-15 applications a day. I still haven’t found one. Every email is a denial. For jobs I’m equally qualified for. It’s ridiculous. I’ve worked for the past 20 years without a break in my employment.

I was legit working at nursing home when COVID started (30-40 residents died after a nurse brought it in 3/2020) and it took me over a year to get some unemployment due to the PUA/DETR chaos . I didnt even get a big sum since I was only paid $10/hr...i wonder how folks got away with so much $$$?
A lot of us were caregiving - living and working - with elders and dealing with our own health issues...it was a nightmare on the phone every day in 2020-2021...the stress of keeping our elders/eachother safe .. all the fighting was nauseating :(

Unemployment at the state lever does not last for years.
At the Federal level, it been 1 to 2 years since they ended C-19 unemployment.
On the other hand, no government should expect people to repay back their benefits if the government overpays them.
Wait, unemployment is NOT tax money. WORKERS pay into a fund which they are entitled to claim. The question should be, why do they have these large amounts sitting around and what are they doing with it if its not given back to the people that paid into it. Seems like somebody uncovered that there should be unemployment rebates given. Americans gotta stop thinking their taxes pay for everything.

I’m getting sick listening to this … I was applying and applying and I was in distressed . I only got one month of unemployment when I was out for 7 months. Hearing this makes me sick
They never paid me almost $2k that was owed during Covid. This was back when all you could do was call but not get through. For MONTHS and then finally almost a YEAR, I called and called and called and called and called. Eventually I couldn't afford to stay, had to leave my apartment and move in with my Mother in Florida. They never paid me and I was never able to get someone on the phone. SHAMEFUL system

I then appealed it and have been waiting over 1 year to my side to be heard a total of 27k owed to me still
Sorry, I'm not going to help people becoming homeless. I've been waiting on an appeal since February. The last correspondence I was threatened and told I may owe them. I had to resort to rent assistance. I am working, but wages compared to inflation aren't enough.
