CORRECTION: A Black Hawk helicopter SLAMMED into a passenger airplane. Stop the stupid propaganda. There is NOTHING the airplane pilot could have done, they were approaching the landing, 100% the helicooter's fault. Enough already!

The Plane was on flaps, therefore it had little maneuverability and pilots had very little control of the craft!
Why would Military craft be in Civilian Airspace?
      They stay away from it.

They didn't COLLIDE; the AA plane was EXACTLY where it was supposed to be. The Army helicopter failed to identify the passenger plane as it was supposed to do, then THE HELICOPTER crashed into the plane. Don't use word that make it sound like the pilots of the AA plane had ANYTHING to do with the crash. Also, the helo didn't have ADSB or if it had it installed it wasn't turned on, either way it's inexcusable. The AA pilots had no way of seeing the Army helo without it. Now 60+ people are dead. Catastrophic systemic failure!!

The VFR chopper was asked by ATC if they had visual contact with the landing IFR aircraft, they responded in the affirmative, they then proceeded to intersect with the IFR aircraft. It is the responsibility of the VFR aircraft to avoid the intersect. CHOPPER IS AT FAULT. NO FAULT on ATC as they asked the correct questions of the VFR chopper, and NOT the inbound ILS aircraft as they were on the glide-path, in the correct position and in communication with ATC. The military pilot took 66 souls and himself.

    • @donkey3187
      @donkey3187 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

@@sounddoctor5decades Chopper may have made mistakes, but ultimately ATC was at fault. They asked the chopper if they saw the plane. Chopper said yes, But chopper was looking at the wrong plane. ATC was supposed to say, "Do you see the plane to your left at 11:00" ,for example, to make sure the pilot has eyes on the correct plane. You can see how not doing that allowed the accident to happen. Also, ATC could have given the chopper directions on where to go when they saw an impending possibe collision on radar, instead of, "do you see it" ATC didnt follow protocol and f'd up big time. They actually saw both aircraft and were in a position prevent it with more direction and specificity. ATC failed.

@@donkey3187 See though, what you are choosing to ignore is that we all have access to listen to the ATC recording at the time of the incident. The 18m32s leading up to it and the 13m24s directly following it. ATC asked the helo if they could see the plane. PAT25 (the helo) confirmed. ATC told PAT25 to pass *behind* CRJ (the passenger plate). Then PAT25 was flown directly into the passenger plane's approach.

That I do not understand. The airplane would have had zero visibility of that helicopter since its nose would have been pointed up. The Only thing I can think of is the training flight thought they had a box around the airport for training and someone at the tower effed up and sent the plane to the wrong runway.

If this wasnt intentional the incompetence needed by the helicopter pilot is staggering. That would imply he was so distracted, inside the airspace of a major international airport, he didnt see the plane until it was too late. Not that ATC did them any favors by not calling out their collision course. Such a tragedy.

That flashing red "CA" on the ATC screen means collision alert. 1:22 The ATC knew they were on a collision course but didn't alter either aircraft's course but rather just ask the chopper pilots if they had the plane in sight. That would assume the copper pilots were seeing the plane ATC wanted them to see and not some other plane in this very busy airspace. That's how it appears to me anyways.

The majority of people within the system don’t realize how flawed it is because it’s all they’ve ever known. In the U.S., air traffic control practices and regulatory allowances create unnecessary risks that would be considered unacceptable elsewhere.
Some American pilots argue that it's fine to switch their collision avoidance system to a less sensitive mode just to avoid minor alerts, even though those alerts are meant to help prevent midair crashes. Refusing to follow an alert simply because they have the traffic in sight, undermining the automated safety system designed to prevent midair collisions. Others accept visual separation at night-when even daytime visual separation carries inherent risks-or agree to late visual switches.
The fact that U.S. controllers find it acceptable to “slam dunk” a heavy jet, in uncontrolled VFR traffic, which is permitted within 500 feet of commercial operations-a level of proximity that is outright reckless-is just insane.
The structural flaws of the system extend beyond fixed-wing operations. A look at the helicopter route chart for Washington, D.C., shows that the Blackhawk involved in the recent incident was flying from Route 1 to Route 4-routes that literally require helicopters to pass underneath landing airliners on final approach to KDCA. The current configuration was a matter of "when," not "if."

I'm assuming that you're implying that the US is backwards in comparison to Europe? (You certainly can't be implying Asia, lol). You realize that the US fields more flights per day than any one European country sees in a year, right? It's a lot easier to implement some complex and unnecessary flight protocol when you have 200 flights per day, as opposed to the 50,000 flights per day the US sees in peak.
The fact that this is the first major crash the USA has seen in 15 years says a lot about the efficiency of the way we operate our airspace. We invented and pioneered aviation, and are still the recognized world leader in air travel, so quit trying to denigrate our ATC and pilots as though we operate at a deficiency compared to some unnamed, nonexistent "elsewhere" country.
You, thinking that 'helicopters passing under aircraft on final approach' is some great taboo that is inherently more risky than passing under aircraft at any other point in their flight, tells me all that I need to know about your understanding of aeronautics. In your world, no aircraft should ever pass over or under any other aircraft, which would limit us to about 1000 flights per day, at best, which might work for Belgium, but it won't work for the United States.

@@RockandrollNegro I'm studying aviation law, so I welcome the rebuttle. However, your argument relies on two main claims: (1) that the U.S. handles far more air traffic than Europe, making stricter protocols impractical, and (2) that the absence of a major crash in 15 years proves the system’s efficiency. However, both points overlook critical nuances.
First, volume alone does not justify lower safety standards. While it’s true that the U.S. manages more flights per day than any single European country, Europe as a whole handles a comparable amount of air traffic under stricter regulations without compromising efficiency. The argument that higher traffic volumes prevent safer practices assumes that efficiency and safety are mutually exclusive when, in reality, well-designed regulations enhance both. If complexity were the sole limiting factor, the U.S. wouldn’t lead in areas like NextGen ATC implementation.
Second, the “15 years without a major crash” argument is misleading. Aviation safety isn't just about avoiding catastrophic accidents but also about preventing near misses, midair incursions, and runway incidents. The FAA's own data shows a rising number of runway incursions and TCAS Resolution Advisories in U.S. airspace. A system that routinely relies on last-minute conflict resolution rather than proactive risk mitigation is not a model of efficiency-it’s a game of statistical luck.
Regarding helicopter routes, your dismissal of the concern misses the point. The issue isn’t whether aircraft should ever pass over or under each other but rather whether the specific traffic patterns in controlled airspace unnecessarily increase collision risks. The DCA helicopter corridor forces helicopters to fly directly beneath airliners on final approach, at low altitudes, in a congested urban environment. The fact that you compare this to routine over-and-under flight at cruising altitude suggests a misunderstanding of why this particular setup is problematic.
No one is arguing that the U.S. is "backwards" in aviation, nor that it should adopt Europe’s system wholesale. The point is that certain U.S. ATC practices-such as allowing uncontrolled VFR traffic within 500 feet of commercial operations, frequent “slam dunk” approaches, and questionable TCAS practices-are riskier than they need to be. Recognizing and addressing those risks isn’t an attack on U.S. aviation; it’s a call to make a strong system even better.

Can you imagine witnessing this in real time?

I dont think it makes any difference real time vs 30 minutes later on a video. Its just as horrible either way.

Arm chair quarterback comments here, as per usual! That AA was approaching at probably 130 knots = 150mph. At these speeds, circumstances happen rapidly. The Black Hawk helicopter in the video is traveling fast also, and without seeing the descending plane, it would be easy, unfortunately to hit the passenger jet. Plus, the original video shows a jet taking off in the path of both, in the opposite direction, and the BH crew might have mistaken that plane for the AA jet that the the air traffic controller warned them about. Only time will figure it out. But, on a positive note, it was a miracle both crashed into the Potomac, because there would more than likely be, additional casualties in that populated area, from the falling flaming debris. *R.i.P. & God Bless the victims.

ATC asked if they saw the CRJ. PAT25 confirmed they saw it. It wasn't confusion like you're trying to claim.

@@mimcduffee86 They mistaken plane in front of them for the CRJ, they had no idea tower was talking about another plane. Tower did not give altitude, location and bearings of incoming plane AS PER MANUAL. Helo maintained visual contact with plane in front of them and had no idea of the second incoming plane. ATC fucked up bad. Possibly DEI hiring related.

@ I never stated confusion, everything is amateur speculation at this point. Mistaken and confusion are two separate meanings.

bad news always sells, and this should have never happened. we can always put the blame on someone else. The military is aware of what they are doing. They travel everywhere and everyday. it's not like someone new traveling. There should be more safety precautions to happen when people aboard an airplane.
