      Just Eat Life my father is Chilean, when i was a kid he used to do a dish called "Seviche", It was delicious, and i took 10 years to figure it out that It was made with raw fish, because the assembly and seasonings was so good and strong that hidens the fish flavor

    I'm from New York and of Irish/German decent. This isn't an abomination because corned beef and cabbage has always been a dish of cultural diffusion and immigrant groups sharing ideas. The corned beef in the recipe was originally a bacon product when made in Ireland. In New York City, Irish immigrants borrowed the idea of corned beef from their Eastern European Jewish neighbors because it was affordable and readily available. So here's to cultural diversity, especially in this crazy city of ours. We aren't a melting pot, we're a mixed salad!

      Thank you for sharing this - we love food history! Cheers to our mixed salad!

    • @patrickforsythe1577
      @patrickforsythe1577 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As an Irish person I can confirm this. We ( being everyone I know ) never use beef but a gammon joint which when boiled with cabbage becomes really salty. It's such a great simple recipe

    Wee its Nilaga!
    Not an immigrant but I am from a mixed family.
    Born in Libya to a Filipino mom and a Swiss dad. Schooled in the Philippines. Ended up working in Saudi Arabia and I am now here in the UK. Yey to mixed cultures!

  • @shinesbrighter
    @shinesbrighter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I was so confused in the beginning when you said corned beef, cabbage and fish sauce, but then in the end, it occurred to me-it's a variation on nilaga! Nilaga literally means "boiled" along with cabbage, carrots and onions. She just used a different cut of meat. This is definition of Filipino comfort food to me :') sometimes we vary the veggies with bok choy instead of cabbage (depends on what's in the fridge!), add in corn and even banana plantain (Saba), try it out!

    I was born in the Philippines, but moved to Houston, TX as a munchkin. Houston is easily one of the most diverse city in America. I grew up trading lumpia for deliciousness from my Nigerian neighbors on one side and Vietnamese neighbors on the other. I feel so grateful growing up feeling like this is the norm.- that differences were a part of what made things beautiful-- and delicious! Thanks for sharing your story!!

    I don't eat meat, but this brings back lots of memories. My grandmother was what was called a kibei, a Japanese-American educated in Japan. She lived her adult life in Hawaii and then California. She used to cook corned beef and cabbage all the time when I was little. She also used to take us to an Irish restaurant, so she could get her favorite dish with homemade soda bread. Here's to cultural mash-ups and honoring diversity! Itadakimasu.

    Love your positivity and energy Jen. My parents migrated here from Cambodia. They lived in Thailand (which is where I was born) and also the Philippines in a refugee camp before coming to America. They wanted a future for my siblings and I (5 children) and have always been a proud American without losing their traditions. They never forgot their roots and at the same time celebrated the American culture. My parents are grateful for the opportunity that was given to them here.

Thank you for sharing your family's immigrant story! And i love corned beef too and maybe next time ill try it with kanin and patis!

    OH I LOVE THIS! Your parents sound amazing. My dad is English, and my mum is Filipino/Spanish/Chinese but I’m born and bred in Australia. This corned beef is something she learned to make for my dad and feed the fam. We always had white sauce with ours as well, but we had dat rice! Rice at every meal! I’ve understood more in adulthood how lucky I am to have had such a mixed cultural background because it exposed my palette to so much more at a younger age (grew up in the suburbs in Australia, not many ‘ethnics’ or ‘asians’ 😄) whilst still celebrating local ‘culture’ (just BBQ everything) 😘

    I love your family story. My wife is Filipina. I can totally get the fish sauce now that I'm use to cooking Asian foods. We are cooking corned beef and cabbage, black eyed peas with whole baby okra on top corn bread and ube pie for desert. If you like your cabbage alittle spicey and Cajun I put like 1/2 teaspoon of liquid crab boil in my water right at the beginning.

    Old style Japanese Americans don't use the fish sauce, but it's pretty similar to this. We do the plate, or the bowl. Sometimes a little wet, sometimes a soup. Of course, rice with it. I didn't realize it was a widespread recipe until I saw people sharing their photos. It was mostly soup with slices of beef.

    "if you've ever boiled cabbage in your house it smells like fart, but it tastes delicious!" Best food video quote ever! The 1st part of the vid was fantastic with your backstory! Your dad clearly started the "repurpose revolution" with the car seat sofa, thanks Jen's Dad. Leo as a "somewhere down the line Irish/English/whoknowswhat American myself" I can't thank you enough for the potatoes. And also Jen I guess your Mother served with rice because like many people all over the world she treated Leo's potatoes as a vegetable primarily rather than a starch. Isn't that why we see potatoes in some types of tacos? One of your best videos ever! You guys are amazing! #gushing #fart

Ever since I was a child, my lola (grandmother) would always cook this dish for lunch on Sundays since it's the only day of the week when our family is complete. She also adds bananas (semi-ripe "saba" variety) which adds a nice subtle sweetness to the broth. I really liked this video, keep it up! :)

We also add the bony parts of the beef/pork, making the broth so amazing. Eat that with white rice and patis (fish sauce) with a lot of sili (bird eye chili) and you'll be in heaven. We have this kind of recipe in philippines called nilagang baka or bulalo. We only use a different kind of beef. And instead of carrots we use corn and bell pepper. This is so salivating. Thank you for doing this ms.Jen I've learned a lot from you. I also love thai food. And your channel. Haha 😊 god bless you always.

    Ay, half Rican half Cuban here and it wasn't until high school that I even saw corned beef not with white rice. 🤣🤷🏽it's what we do. Arroz con todo.

    Makes sense to add rice for bulk and fish sauce for flavor. This dish is known to be very bland, Puertorican style would be to add sazon and sofrito into the slow cooker along with the water.

    I'm Filipino and I was born in the Philippines but was raised in the United States. My mom learned to cook a lot of stuff and this combination is one she made for me and she also incorporated the fish sauce and white rice. It is an awesome combination! ^_^
