    Nice video! I’m a huge fan of the Surfliner, even though I don’t live near it. I caught Surfliner 763 a few days ago on a family trip, though. Sad to see the F59’s go, but the Chargers will be a great replacement. And we’ll get some non-fouled K5LA’s for once!

    The Surfliner holds a special place in my heart because it was the first Amtrak train I ever rode on! Back in October of 2016, my parents took me on a vacation to California for the very first time! One of the things that I did there was ride the Surfliner from LA to San Diego with my mother. Once in San Diego, we visited the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. Later in the day, my Mom and I took the Surfliner back to LA to meet up with my Dad who was in a work meeting (I think) while we were gone! It was a great trip and I hope to ride the Surfliner again one day!

    Great video of my most favorite Amtrak route-The Pacific Surfliner. I travel on the Pacific Surfliner between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard when I’m home in the San Diego area for visits up to a week.
    I alternate my visits between Los Angeles & Oxnard. My next visit home, to the San Diego area, I will be visiting Los Angeles next when I ride the Pacific Surfliner. Last year I rode to Oxnard, CA on 5/27/2017 for a visit & since that day I have been traveling on the Pacific Surfliner. Best travel choice I ever made, don’t have to fight traffic and deal with those that slow down for the sake of slowing down when there is no construction zone,no accident, no wet and/or foggy weather.

    I took this train in April 2022 on the day the Padres played the Dodgers in San Diego. I did a round-trip from LA to San Juan Capistrano and loved it! HUGE train, comfortable seats. The train was busy though, and didn't see ANY scenery.

    the single level coach surf liner trains are used when classes are using the surf liner trains for taking field trips to zoos or museums. This is for a safety reason, I guess, especially when kindergartners are taking the train for field trip to the zoo, or at least that is what I noticed one time when I was taking a surf liner train to Santa Barbara. that train was using single coaches instead of the double Decker surf liner coaches and there were kindergartners taking that train to Santa Barbara. they were probably going to zoo in Santa Barbara.

    Did you know that the surfliner trains have reconfigurated the direction that the locomotive and the cab cars run. When the surfliner began service, the locomotives pulled the trains towards Los Angeles union station, but sometime in 2003 or 2004, the surfliner trains turned around. The surfliner trains now push towards Los Angeles union station and pull towards San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo.

    I recently found out before work on the san diego trolley was started, there was a proposition to make a commuter train between downtown san diego and san ysidro, which i wish wouldve been the choice they made, but anyway, i think the perfect place for the Amtrak yard in san diego would either be national city in between the 2 bnsf yards or further south in chula vista following the old coronado line tracks

    • @CoasterFan2105
      @CoasterFan2105  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, seems to me like a commuter train would have made much more sense than a trolley on that line. But at least it's something!

  • @NozomuYume

    The biggest problem with the Coast Daylight idea is that it would run at almost exactly the same time as the Coast Starlight -- i.e. it would be rather redundant. You'd have to do some major track improvements to improve speed to make a second Socal -> Bay Area daytime trip -- by which time hopefully CHSR would be up and running. In that eventuality the only cities that would really benefit heavily from the Coast Daylight would be Salinas and Paso Robles.
    A *huge* win would be an economy sleeper from SF -> San Diego running at night with limited to no food service (maybe include vending machines), and simple berths (with roomettes maybe as a business-class upgrade).
    There's a bus company called Cabin which is doing the berth solution that started last year, with express service between SF and Santa Monica. I tried it though and, well, it's a *BUS*. The swaying and braking of the bus made me wake up in terror at night when going through construction zones and ESPECIALLY over Pacheco pass when the bus tried to pass semi trucks on curves. This would not have been a problem if there were a California night train. =(

    • @CoasterFan2105
      @CoasterFan2105  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I have seen, the eventual plan is to have a "Coast Daylight" train that leaves about 3 hours ahead of the Coast Starlight in each direction and later, when train capacity on the line is expanded, to have an evening/overnight train running in each direction as well. Adding these trains is probably something that should have been done a long time ago in order to reconnect San Francisco with a direct Amtrak rail link to the rest of the network. CalTrain is a good service but it is rather difficult to use if you are traveling with a lot of luggage.

    • @NozomuYume
      @NozomuYume 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they could improve the trackage on the northern half of the route enough to get rid of delays, you could have SF have a branch that attaches at San Jose like the Empire Builder's Portland branch. You would have to make sure that any rolling stock was compatible with electrification (which is happening soon, even if the DTX tunnel is way in the future).

    The Pacific Surfliner could be a great success for Amtrak especially with the new SC-44’s coming in. The best way Amtrak can increase ridership on this route is faster travel time. Brightline is doing great and it’s top speed hasn’t even been reached so if Amtrak makes a move here upgrade the rails because the P42 is getting old and the SC-44 will get older and we will have faster locomotives. This is the beginning of a new high speed route that will hopefully be better than that Acela thing.

    It’s a shame those Chargers won’t be able to stretch their legs on the Surfliner route. There aren’t even any possibilities for curve straightening either, since The whole route is between the ocean and Pacific Coast Highway. I spend a lot of time in Santa Barbara and it’s a shame the service will never have high-speed potential.

  • @archlinuxrussian
    @archlinuxrussian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm curious as to what's spurring the investment in single-level passenger cars as opposed to bi-level. I mean, as you said, to introduce those to the Pacific Surfliner would only reduce capacity it would seem (or I could be wrong?), so I'd assume they would be prioritised towards the San Joaquins or Capitol Corridor services. Would love to hear your thoughts on it! :)
    Also, not telling you what "you should be making videos on", but I'd be excited to see videos on the other two California-supported routes ^_^ either way, awesome videos :) thanks!

    • @russellgxy2905
      @russellgxy2905 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the reasoning is because I'm not entirely certain if the cars are actual full bilevel cars like the ones used in commuter service. The Surfliner cars seem to be descendants of Santa Fe's Hi-Level cars (via the Superliners of course) and mainly act as elevated cars with the passenger section further up to reduce sound from the wheels on the track. Now, I could be wrong, but I'm not sure how much of a capacity change there is between an Amfleet I and a Surfliner car

    • @archlinuxrussian
      @archlinuxrussian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're largely correct. The California Car (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Car_(railcar)) coaches seat 89 + 1 wheelchair, the Pacific Surfliner Car (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfliner_(railcar)) coaches seat 90, while Amfleet (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amfleet) seats 84.
      I believe the single-level cars CalTrans plans on purchasing are the same as the ones on Brightline (Siemens), though I could be wrong. Either way, it seems it won't impact the capacity too much...but I do personally like the bi-level cars ^_^ though I am sure there are probably some good arguments against them (banking perhaps?).

    • @centralcaliforniarail
      @centralcaliforniarail 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m pretty sure the new single-level cars are for the San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor trains. Yes, it does seem like they will decrease capacity but it’s possible that there will be more cars per train to make capacity about the same.

    • @archlinuxrussian
      @archlinuxrussian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. And my personal hypothesis is that they're doing this in part for compatibility with the HSR stations in Fresno, Bakersfield, etc, since those will have elevated platforms and all. But that could be grasping for straws.

    • @centralcaliforniarail
      @centralcaliforniarail 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m also wondering if they will have new cab-cars too. Or will they use two locomotives on each train? There’s some concept art online that has an SC-44 with windows about halfway down the length of the “locomotive” that I think will be the new cab-cars.

    please give more info about the new single level passenger cars from siemens because I DONT WANT THEM TO REPLACE THE BI LEVEL SURFLINER CARS :(

      They won't replace the bilevels, just add to them. It was originally supposed to be an order for more bilevels but Nippon Sharyo, the company that was going to build them, could not build a strong enough cab car so the contracted out to Siemens to build single level cars instead.

    No Sheldon Cooper in the comments section? I guess his IQ is a lie as well...
    Now I got to go watch the steam and bullet trains as they are my favorites.

    The surfliner is nice, but it's always expensive. Now I'm not some cheap person, but I don't think it's worth spending $115 both ways from LA to San Diego for 2 people (In my opinion). Why is it pricier than the commuter trains I would sometimes take and are like 40-50% cheaper?
    Great video btw.
    p.s. why are they building a san diego yard?

      Thanks! They want to have a place to store the trains other than at the station. I'm not sure what the exact reason but presumably at a maintenance facility, they could store extra equipment, have a "wash rack" to wash the trains when needed and more.

      CoasterFan2105 oooo thanks sounds goood. And what about the prices of the train tickets

    • @dynasty0019

      Because the Surfliner offers more amenities and less stops than Metrolink. A commuter rail like Metrolink is not going to offer reclining seats, free Wi-Fi, cafe car, more legroom, business class, etc. when its job is to simply transport commuters from the suburbs to employment centers. The Surfliner, being an inter-city train which caters to travelers, tourists, and leisure riders, relies heavily on speed, comfort, and amenities to sell tickets. All of those things are not cheap to provide, that's why the Surfliner's tickets are more expensive.

    Instead of just making a video of the P42DC, you should do a video on General Electric's entire Genesis series of locomotives.
