    Right now there's not much here in Europe:
    · 153 kHz ─ ‘Radio Antena Saṭelor’ from Romania
    · 162 kHz ─ Technically time signal for TDF but with USB or LSB you can actually listen to ‘France Inter’ really bad, like less than 500 Hz of bandwidth sound only.
    · 171 kHz ─ ‘Médi1’ (Radio Méditerranée Internationale) from Morocco
    · 189 kHz ─ ‘RÚV Rás 1/RÚV Rás 2’ from Iceland (hard to get the signal very far away from Iceland)
    · 198 kHz ─ ‘BBC radio 4’ (main talk radio from the BBC) and ‘BBC World Service’ during night time.
    · 207 kHz ─ ‘RÚV Rás 1/RÚV Rás 2’ from Iceland (same as 189 kHz, different broadcast site though)
    · 225 kHz ─ Polskie Radio Program 1
    · 234 kHz ─ ‘RTL’ (in French). French broadcasting from Luxembourg even though it is France's version of the channel. Probably the way to get the signal available in Luxembourg since there is some sort of preference for Luxemburguish and German over French, despite being the most spoken language of the country.
    · 243 kHz ─ ‘DR Langbølge (Kalundborg Radio)’ from Zealand, Denmark (not reaching very long distances).
    · 252 kHz ─ 1) ‘Chaîne 3 Algérie’ (from Algeria); 2) ‘RTÉ Radio 1’ from Ireland
    · 270 kHz ─ ‘ČRo Radiožurnál’ from Czechia
    Here in Portugal I can pick the time signal (162, silent almost), 171 kHz Médi1, 198 kHz BBC's, 234 kHz and 252 kHz Chaîne 3 Algérie.
    We recently lost 2 other radios that could be picked here: 216 kHz RMC from Monaco and 183 kHz Europe1.
    I really enjoyed Europe1 and it's such a shame this band's not being used properly since it makes possible long distance broadcasting here. It could be some sort of special International band and could even be used for DRM (still looking for a DRM receiver though...)....

      I have a terrible reception of BBC and even RTL (~250km away from me). That‘s why longwave just is bad, you need a very long antenna to get anything useful. MW and SW are better and even on VHF I get clear signals from 110km away (due to topography).

    • @DavidEsp1
      @DavidEsp1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A shame to lose such stations, LW and MW, as they gave opportunity to accidentally or habitually encounter our geographic neighbours through music an talk. Now that is prevented by an artificially introduced digital divide (yes VPN can be used but that’s more awkward and non accidental/casual).

    Anyone can transmitt on 160-190 kHz as long as it's 1 watt or under and the total length of the antenna is only 50 feet or under.

      @@snaj9989 if you are a licensed holder you can use 2000 watts in the appropriate band. You cannot use it on the neglected long wave band. 160 kHz to 190khz. Look in the radio amature handbook or check the ARL website.

    Interesting video. Here in Australia, we mostly have weather and airport beacons on the long wave band. So far, I have never heard a standard broadcast station on that band.

    Years ago I had a cheap multi band radio with SW and LW (I didn't remember the brand or even model) but when I used to set it in LW mode at day time there was nothing more than static. But at nigh time, certain AM commercial stations from my own city could be heard in some LW frequencies... Any idea why this used to happen??? Thanks for share the video and info!

      you probably picked up one of the radio station's Harmonics. there are harmonics all through the radio spectrum and audio spectrum as well.

    • @misteron07
      @misteron07 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      harmonics, but if you have acres and can stretch a 200 foot long wire antenna you may can pick up other countries on these frequencies. I heard Morse code when I used to listen to Long Wave. I have no clue what is on now because I got rid of my aircraft radio compass that could receive 150 Khz to 1500 Khz. Military radios work best because of the ability to pick up weak signals.

    • @misteron07
      @misteron07 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to also use a long wave radio to pick up hidden signals on the C band satellite spectrum. you need a satellite setup that can pick up C band. the receiver also must have a sub-carrier jack or you can use the video jack if there are no filters in the video circuit. you plug the antenna jack of the long wave receiver into the sub-carrier jack of the satellite receiver then tune in a channel then use the long wave to fine tune the signals. There was mainly phone signals or phone calls that were one way you had no idea where the other person's signal was. there was news feeds and radio reading service for the blind and physically handicap. also sports broadcast. I really dont know what is on now because I dont have either setup now.

      @user-sm7og6fi3j 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      David Harden Ireland's state broadcaster RTE (Radio Teilifis Eireann) has it. It carries the country's most popular station, RTE 'Radio 1' but they use it from time to time for alternative programming than what's carried on the main FM channel, such as for religious services, weather & shipping forecasts, election result counts and such like. It's other main purpose is so as to reach the large Irish diaspora in the UK, a huge number of whom would have moved there in the 1950's and are now quite elderly and wouldn't typically use the Internet, and might particularly want to hear news bulletins and football & hurling matches from home. Incidentally it's quite convenient for listeners in both the UK AND Ireland as it's on the same waveband as BBC's Radio 4 (as you'll know) who carry somewhat similar programming so I suspect a large number of listeners will move over and back between the two.
      I believe Ireland share the wavelength with Algeria and so lower the TX output at night. Actually I believe Ireland had been allocated the frequency for many years but they didn't pick it up until the 1990's until they STARTED Atlantic 252 as a sort of equivalent to the old Radio Luxembourg English Language Pop service. (It may have even been a joint effort with RTL but not 100% sure). The transmitter is located roughly 60 miles inland from Dublin, near the town of Kells.
      RTE had actually been planning to terminate their longwave service recently presumably as a cost-cutting exercise but huge listener reaction against the idea, particularly in the UK, saved it, at least for the time being. Sadly I believe the BBC have similar plans for their longwave service from Droitwich, that as soon as the transmitter's elderly, and apparently unique, valves blow it will be 'Goodnight Vienna' (or whatever). Tragic if true.

    • @OfficialSWLchannel
      @OfficialSWLchannel  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Two thing can help ... on this frequency .. a loop antenna might be good .. since you can really null the interference by turning the loop ... and using a tuning capacitor that prevents anything from unwanted frequencies to creep in the band you are listening to... keep in touch with the channel .. I will try different antennas and see what we can do to limit noise

    The big advantage of longwave is that it penetrates underground much greater than SW or VHF and in a national emergency it might be the only broadcast frequency that people hiding in railway tunnels or underground parkings etc. might be able to receive. After 9-11 the US authorities realised that radio was the most effective way to communicate with the population.

    In central southern England using a Tecsun , all I can hear is BBC Radio 4 at 198 , France 1 at 234 or thereabouts and RTE at 252 which becomes Algeria during early morning. Oh and the blank clock signal …if I wind a wire around the set and take it down the garden and receive anything more , I’ll report back !
    Apparently the 198 kHz signal from Droitwich in England with cease completely after very many decades of transmission when the Valve transmitter packs up because they scoured the world for all the remaining ones which are no longer manufactured and I believe are using the very last one ! 👍
