Great interview. Tony screw truly knows music. These young selectors don’t even come close. This man is a true icon in our music culture. Big up teach dem
@TeachDem thank you sir. One of the more comprehensive interviews I've seen with Tony Screw. Tony Screw is my musical father. I use to leave Bk (Beverly Road stop) and take the train to his place...DB Headquarters (238th strett??) In the BX as a 16..17 year old. Traveled many times to Patterson NJ..Alexander Hamilton Hotel to see Briggy..Shinehead..3 the hard way(Louie Ranking..Bobby Culture and Brimeatone & Fire)..BIG UP 3 girl massive also..lol. If Tony Screw isn't the best..he is the greatest!!
@ Third World Hi Fi was a very good sound with good and nuff chune but not as old or lived as long as Downbeat. Last time I see World Dread was in Smurf House on Atlantic Avenue and Utica and we reasoned and I was to link up with him and then I heard that him had passed away. RIP WORLD JOHNNY RINGO BIGGEST TERRO HONEY SAMMY DREAD.
Awesome interview classic listening the history lesson from the great Tony Screw when a man knows his musical journey he makes you feel like you were there too .This one of the best interviews from Teachdem
Big up to Downbeat every time. I know his musical prowess as a selector, but there is also one reason why I can never forget him. In 1998, at the New York Record Collector Competition, he noticed that I was only playing regular chunes, and he pulled me aside and told me that I had to play rare chunes that were very good if I want to move on to the finals. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't end up with a trophy in the finals. Nuff, love, and respect Tony Screw. He went on to win the open category. He did not have to coach me in a competition that he too was a part of... that is character. Salutations Downbeat.
Really deep deep interview. Deep insight into sound system culture. Down Beat my favorite sound when it comes to one away dub-plates. Give thanks Teach Dem🙏🏾🙏🏾
The box . Sound from the pass,,, and definitely the sound for the future. We scream about history and here it is . Standing tall in the dancehall, wall and hall of fame . I don’t need to hear downbeat in a clash ,,, I want to listen downbeat playing all night drawing classical tune after tune . His selection is beyond vast .
Tony screw. I grew up in the 80s listening to this man on cassette. My brother use to beat some downbeat in the house. "Supa, come caulk the party Supa come caulk the party for me!!!"
In early mid 80's, we had Downbeat cassettes on the ends: at that time, it was the only foreign rub a dub sound we rated (no disrespect to the British sounds); Tony Screw had that unique Studio 1st link.
i went to the first time tony scrue play at party in branx new York carry the music by three people to play on sherdon ave , and he never stop back in the early 70 tis , up seter sounds, ❤❤❤❤

Wooooooooow teach. I know down beat but it's like I don't really know down beat. Tony Screw mek rodigan look like a bwoy scout. What a wealth of knowledge. One good question u ask is what is tony gonna do wid the sound and turn it over to another yute. I can't get over the fact the man hav every artist outside of saw. Great interview. U was talking to another sound man the other day ....I think it was silver hawk and most of the tune for the sound dem in bad condition and can't even play again. I hope dis question u bring to him mek it resonate wid him so he can hand over the reigns. Pure history and this is one of the better sound man interviews. Big up urself teach dem.
Big up yourself Tony Screw. One correction, "Dubplate Playing in the Ghetto Tonight" is Killamanjaro's original anthem from the early 80s on the Heavenless riddim. It and Water Pumpee, which was also released by Jammys after Jaro made them big. Jaro a play that from before Jim Kelly dead.
Love the history lesson. Wish Tony wasn’t so secretive with the music thou. There’s songs in the interview he wldnt mention the name. Music gonna dead with him. Not fair to music lovers or the artist
Bug up father Tony screw it's a pleasure playing alone sude you on killamanjaro sound I remember that night in whare house Brooklyn new York boss I have to your songs on those ridfims are different
