      Oh, really? Because we're both from Skaro and I've never heard that expression before.

      Retro Rich Skaro’s history may have been in the pre time for all we know which is a part of history that is forbidden for Timelords to go to (newer TARDIS models even prevented travel there altogether) and the time period from Genesis of the Daleks was the latest that they could access. Also this was an off the books operation so the CIA probably would’ve wanted to have dedicated as little resources to this as possible to prevent word getting out

But can you just imagine, one minute your a secondary character in carnival of monsters and voicing a dalek or two, but then you go on to play one of the most iconic characters of the show, but then in revenge of the cybermen, you go back to playing one of the background characters on the gold planet Voga like nothing happened.

  • @downix
    @downix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    What people tend to forget is that Michael Wisher was the voice of the Daleks in the Pertwee episode "Death to the Daleks", so in a very real way Davros was giving voice to the mindset that gave rise to the Daleks. An apt symbolism.
    I do wish he was a one serial character. Davros afterwards never klicked with the same resonance ever since.

  • @eccentriastes6273
    @eccentriastes6273 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    This is maybe a really obvious thing to point out, but I always appreciated how Genesis is basically a prequel to all other Dalek stories, but it avoids a lot of prequel problems by having the current Doctor time-traveled into it. It's a rare case of the classic series using time travel for more than just getting to the setting because the Doctor's and the audience's shared foreknowledge about the Daleks is crucial to the story.

    • @TheRealUnkn0wn_289
      @TheRealUnkn0wn_289 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They should have done that more, they did it in spare parts the big finish story where they go back to the origins of the cybermen and it's a prequel of the cybermen stories, it's also really good and a lot of people seem to like it as much as genesis of the daleks, it is a really good story and really creepy

    I always assumed that the peaceful "Thals," we see in, "The Daleks," are descended from the surviving Kaleds AND Thals we see here. This means they finally end up finding a way to live together peacefully. Over time they forget that they were on opposite sides and only remember themselves as one people, with the Dals (daleks) as the enemy.

  • @MerelyAFan
    @MerelyAFan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I will say the recurrent theme of both sides on Skaro eventually resorting to whatever means to wipe out the the other side (including the death of unaffiliated third parties) with the Doctor in the middle trying desperately to save lives and having eventually to make the choice of potential genocide is a rather effective unintentional foreshadowing of what the Time War will become. In that sense it makes for an interesting parallel of the Doctor and Davros having both chosen (for entirely different reasons) to have wiped out their own people during their respective long wars.

    I have really enjoyed Davros' appearances in the new series, but I think that Genesis should've been his one and only appearance in the entire show. The fact that he made the Daleks so evil, so utterly without compassion, so unwilling to accept orders from anyone, and so single-minded in their pursuit to destroy all non-Dalek life, that it ultimately resulted in the inevitable conclusion of them killing him just feels like the perfect ironic death for him

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Agreed, although once they'd let the genie out of the bottle I guess it was hard to put it back. It's much easier to write for a character like Davros than the rather limited Daleks.

    • @Here_is_Waldo
      @Here_is_Waldo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If they made some effort, having a couple of unique Daleks take Davros's place would be easy enough. It would make the race more interesting as well, to my mind.

      @wyrdwik4610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed. Davros has not been served well since his first appearance. The character’s story was told and brought to its proper conclusion. Wisher’s final scene was perfection. Keeping him on certainly diminished the Daleks in their 80s appearances.

    One thing that really holds me back from this episode is that the Kaleds just look like Humans. I understand that the Thals do as well, but the Thals were in the Daleks' first episode as well, that's consistent. I'd be fine with this if the two of them weren't explicitly stated to be different species.

If I were at Big Finish, trying to make repairs to canon, then I would think it would make sense for the Timelords to send a younger version of the Doctor who's known to be a rogue to get rid of the Daleks when they get desperate to get out of the Time War and feign ignorance in the timeline where the war never happened.

That Moment when Sarah Jane and the others get shot while climbing the tower and almost everyone Drops dead, Sarah not being able to move because of the Horror she is vitnessing and then only to Fall down right at the Cliffhanger... Fun for the entire family amirite ? :D Dx

    9/10… I was bored and even annoyed by the Daleks during the last few serials they were on coz the plot wasn’t good and the Daleks annoying and even unneeded. But this one here really brought the excitement and fire back these Daleks needed. The design, the plot, the cast. Everything was on point. The origin of the Daleks and the introduction of their planet Skaro was really fascinating. OFC this mission came from The Time Lords lol What was really got me going and excited was the introduction of Davros! His setting, looks and characterization was frightening and really well written! He is definitely one of the best villains like everyone else was claiming before I started my DW watch. I’m on my first time watch of DW 1963 and now here. I was upset that Harry wasn’t more involved even though he did kinda saved the Doctor three times and had a lot to do in the first episode. Sarah Jane had a lot more to do. I was shocked about how brutal this serial was and people acted like we never had so much before which isn’t quite true. Especially during the Hartnell era there were a few heavy serials with a lot of moral and brutal outcome of it. But this one here was really something else in a good way! I was shocked that Sarah Jane’s escape plan did cost a few people their lives! The 4th Doctor was right not to kill off the Daleks! Because even with erhielt evilness something good will emerge and come out of it. Look how many people fought together, built a new society after their heavy encounters with them. I do think sometimes bad things have to happen to let you grow and become better. I was so positive surprised that they even brought up old encounters with the Daleks! Great twist at the end that they gained a will of their own and turned on Davros!

    Conventional reading is that the attempt to avert the creation of the Daleks was the first shot in the Great Time War simply because this story came before others. However in a war in which Time is a weapon, cause and effect go out of the window. I theorise that the Time Lords discovered that the Daleks had planned to send a duplicate Doctor with his duplicate companions back to Gallifrey to assassinate the High Council (Resurrection of the Daleks). The CIA would have kept a close eye on what the Doctor was doing and it was shown in Trial of a Time Lord that his Tardis was 'bugged' at some point. This would have forced them to consider the possibility of a future where the Daleks had become the dominant species and destroyed all others which in turn would lead them to conclude that it might be better for all concerned (including them) that the Daleks either never existed or evolved into less aggressive creatures. Perhaps it is easier to consider that the actions of the Daleks in planning an attack on the High Council and Gallifrey pushed the Time Lords into reacting. In a similar way the actions of Germany triggered a reaction from GB in WWI and WWII.
    I also wonder if the actions of the Time Lords in sending the Fourth Doctor to Skaro - where he in fact revealed the future horrors of the Dalek conquests, they changed history to such an extent that the Doctor's first meeting with them - when he knew nothing about the Daleks or Skaro never actually happened: that if they had left well alone Ronson and the others who were concerned about the direction of Davros' research, would have succeeded in changing that direction -leading to the far less powerful creatures (who could not leave their city) we saw with the first Doctor. It might account for the change in them when they first invaded Earth. It was not that they were an earlier version of the Daleks, history was being rewritten.

      Neon Genesis Evangelion is such a weird beast. You'll either love it for it's experimentation, or find it to be a pretentious incoherent mess. I'm somewhat in the latter, although I do respect it and I do love characters like Misato. I'd say that it's a bit too heavy, and recommend for something lighter but still has philosophical questions and requires analysis, like Fullmetal Alchemist 2003/Brotherhood.

    Does anyone know why they changed the name of the Dalek’s precursor from “Dal” to “Kaled”? I’ve often wondered why they made the change - did Terry Nation forget the backstory he wrote 11 years prior or did Robert Holmes think Dal and Thal sounded too similar or was it to show that the Thal’s records back in _The Daleks_ weren’t accurate? Either way, it’d be interesting to know how much it bothered fans back in ‘74 that they changed the name.

    • @eli_berdugo04
      @eli_berdugo04 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It probably didn't bother fans all too much considering the Daleks' backstory was extremely muddled already even at that point, with the Dalek comics from 1965 having the Daleks' precursors being small blue humanoids called...well, Daleks, even before the whole war machines thing came along, and a short story from one of the annuals having Daleks being future humans. Continuity just wasn't really all that big of a concern back then
