11-Year-Old Gets 3D-Printed Hands After Dad Meets Engineering Student in Uber

- An 11-year-old girl born with a one finger on each hand has gotten a new pair of 3D-printed hands. Her father drives an Uber and after picking up a Notre Dame engineering student one night, the stranger offered to help the driver's daughter by designing her new hands. From there, students used 3D-printed designs available online and modified the hands to fit the little girl. #InsideEdition

This is SOOO COOL!!! These would be WAAAY neat for a lil guy I took care of when he was younger!!! I'm totally going to show this to his mom n dad!! When he was a toddler, he fell into a fire pit while at a family gathering n running and playing with cousins etc. There wasn't a fire going, but there was the night before n under the ashes were hot cinders...and he was VERY badly burned. He lost all his fingers n was left with basically lil stubs. Sooo sad n a horrible ordeal for him n his family. I took care of him a cpl yrs after that while his Mom n Dad worked n his 2 older siblings were in school. I took him to n from preschool also. During the time I was his sitter he had a toe removed...the 2nd toe, and placed as a thumb, and surgery was a total success!! When his mom let us know that it had 'pinked up' in surgery right away, they all cheered it had worked n knew it would help him in the long run. Some months later they did the other side. The training he received to learn how to handle pencils, how to dress himself, eating, n so on. They did have a VERY fancy hand made for him, but he just didn't adapt to it n basically wanted nothing to do with it. He's grown up a lot since he was here n he's done exceptionally well adjusting to life with his limited use of hands. I've often wondered if something might come along that would be helpful to him, n this might be neat to look into!!

I'm taking it as a major now but it's really hard, you have to know high levels of physics, calculus so prepare for that. But it's a really good major and make sure you go to a really good technical college.

I was in the Engineering School at UCF visiting and a professor brought me in to see the 3d printing machine. THIS is the contraption she showed me among other things. Mindblowing.
