I like to say it's translating informal language requirements into specific machine instructions, a video player with comments becomes the instructions for how to play each frame and how a button interacts.
I'm at the point in my programming career where I know how to create loops and conditional statements but it hasn't "clicked" yet. Still not sure how I would turn this into real-world functionality. Starting my first year of university in September so we'll see how it goes.

You described a programmer, but not a Software Engineer. A programmer lays the bricks, the engineer plans the building. There are tons of great programmers who write shitty software.
