"Do I WHAT?" It was probably something she never even thought about. Their marriage was arranged, so it didn't really matter. But they lived their lives together, fought, starved, had children, etc. Here, they finally realize they've been doing it for the right reasons. Their love isn't the stuff of romance novels, but it's much deeper and more real. More substantive.
My favourite moment, if u watch carefully, when they sing "it doesn't change a thing" tevye does this wonderful little movement which actually reveals that for him this is really significant, to know that she loves him. His heart is gold. I love how sensitive he is despite his extraverted outwardness.
"I'm your wife!" "I know! But do you love me?" Lol. Always gets me. If you ever get a chance to see it live, make sue you go. Totally different experience. Way more intense.
I grew up observantly Jewish; the story of FotR is the exact story of both sides of my family, who immigrated to Boston from Russian/Polish/Lithuanian shtetls in 1908, so when I say I've grown up with "Fiddler" basically tattooed on my brain, believe me. Every syllable, memorized. And yet. The older I get, the more this song takes on greater meaning, and depth, and just devastates me. As a kid, I wasn't focused on Tevye and Golde...as a middle aged woman, I watch this scene, weeping, and see that this song is an entire story, and in the movie, gorgeously acted. Here's Tevye, watching his daughters live out a new culture with new values he never expected to witness, and he realizes he's NEVER asked his wife if she loves him. He's never even considered doing so. It never occurred to him that it was something he should wonder about. More than that, he realizes how much he wants and needs the answer to be YES. And we watch him, in this song, reveal his vulnerability -- the boisterous, acerbic, jovial Tevye goes away, and he gets more and more earnest and authentic in his need for Golde to take this conversation seriously...and then his relief and joy at her answer...you can see how badly he needed to hear that yes, she loves him. (But, you know, he can't get too mushy, so...he contains his warmth and emotion to that beautiful smile and the adorable little shoulder bump.) And for Golde's part, she's SO guarded, SO pragmatic, SO committed to holding the household together with an iron grip...it's SO hard for her to let down that titanium exterior...and then we watch her surprise at her own answer - at her own realization that yes, all this time, everything she's been doing for 25 years and five daughters and this crazy, loud, imperfectly human man...has been about love after all. It's so achingly real -- the way real people in desperately hard life circumstances can only allow themselves so much softness before they need to buck up again -- but this is that moment. The softest it gets, for this resilient couple. A phenomenal scene.
I love Tevye and Golde's dynamic. Tevye is the man of the house, but doesn't overly assert this and is afraid of upsetting Golde. Despite being the caretaker, Golde holds some dominance over Tevye, but respects his feelings when he disowns Chava. They have a balanced marriage and treat each other as equals.
@@RachelDeRosier010894 she ran away from home & married someone who's outside her faith that child deserved to be disowned who doesn't listen to her father
I feel it was clear they loved each other. They fought often, yes, but it wasn't on things that were important on personal levels, like values or religion. In that case, most of their "fights" that we see are just bickering. People who love each other do bicker a lot, no matter what. It's human nature. But think about it - When have they had a problem, a true problem, with each other? They argue about little things, but they don't actively dislike each other. In "If I Were A Rich Man", Tevye has a verse in which he mentions "[his] Golde/Looking like a rich man's wife", and he smiles. If he were rich, he could have his choice, but he doesn't think of anyone but Golde. He mentions things she enjoys, such as supervising meals, knowing that she is a commanding person, and from his facial expression, we can see that he finds it endearing, and he enjoys the fact that she takes control and holds her own. He even smiles thinking about how she screams at people, because I think that's something he loves about her. She's tough and doesn't let people push her around. If you look at the film, she balances him well. She has an iron will and a no-nonsense demeanor, holding up decisions when Tevye is easily swayed. Meanwhile, Tevye has compassion that can tame Golde's somewhat aggressive personality, reminding her to consider feelings in addition to her goals (e.g. consider Tzeitel's feelings for Motel, despite the fact that marrying Lazar Wolf would bring Tzeitel material happiness). What they have in common is that they love their children and want what’s best for them, and they hold their (congruent) core values close and will not let them bend, which is the most important thing couples should have in common with one another. As for Golde, she does scold him often, but she likes to tease him, keep him on his toes (eg. "My breadwinner" and "You'll be late"). Not only that, but even with her goal-oriented personality, she includes Tevye in major decisions, valuing his input, as is seen when considering marrying Tzeitel to Lazar. Golde dearly wishes for Tzeitel to marry a rich man so that she may be well off and never starve, but she wants Tevye to be involved, and I don't think that's just because of the tradition that the papa arranges marriages. She talks to him, actively trying to engage him in everyday life, even when he doesn't want to talk or isn't interested. She knows what's important, and she wants to discuss these things with him. Again, she balances him, keeping him on track when he strays as he does for her, encouraging her to take a break from all the work she does in order to enjoy life and celebrate happy events. They know each other well, too. Tevye knows that Golde loves to get smart with him, what she enjoys, things she would feel strongly about. He guesses her response to the possibility of Tzeitel marrying Motel, and he's precisely correct. Golde knows that Tevye values education, especially in his children and their eventual husbands. They have little routines for preparing for the Sabbath, seeing how they hold the curtain between them, hand off different items. They know the drill because they've been together so long. They KNOW each other. But even if they didn't love each other, they share a deep respect for one another, truly valuing the other person, and only wanting what's best for them. Tevye thinks only of Golde when he daydreams about what kind of woman his "rich man's wife" would be, and Golde, despite her deep urge for wealth, never imagines herself with anyone else, never considers another man wealthier than Tevye. I think they harbor a true, deep affection for one another. I do believe they are in love, love that is firmly fixed and maintained through shared values and understanding. I can understand why some might say they don't love each other, but I think at the core, they get along very well, and I think they wouldn't have been happy with anyone else.
In this some Golde seems reluctant to answer almost as if she doesn’t know herself, until she ultimately realizes that the answer is yes. Yes they do love each other, and even if it changes absolutely nothing about their lives, somehow it makes them better for knowing.
My absolute favorite part of this movie. I was getting sentimental at 2 am and couldn't stop thinking about it. Went to look up a clip, was not disappointed.
It 1:10 am and I just did the same exact thing. Stoned and eating Hershey kisses😂 this song makes me cry sometimes. Idk why I just find it very…beautiful? That kind of love
As a marriage therapist, I know the importance of saying, "I love You" each and everyday. We need to say it as much as our spouse needs to hear it. Gordon Foote, LCSW
It's amazing how important each of these songs are. In this one, even after everything that transpires, he still has a wife who love him. You can be sure, having someone like Golde love you after 25 years shows you did something right.
Malcom your are not a foolish old man if you have to wipe your tears from your eyes, it only says your a human with feelings, like most of us. Or els I have to say this silly old woman has to wipe her eyes too.....
