AvatarAidan already made a thumbnail for it. And there's not a whole lot to edit, thankfully.* Also, thank you to those who are good sports about the game. I myself like Mario Kart 64 despite its issues. I just hope to open a discussion about that game.
I loved Mario Kart 64, but I agree. It really just doesn't hold up well compared to the new mario kart games. But it walked so that the new mario karts could run.
@GregThePinguino My brother and I thought the same thing back in ‘97 after a few months of playing it. We hooked up the SNES to play SMK and found out that it is not worse, SMK was a turd compared to 64. It was our nostalgia getting the better of us.
@@CEOofAustralia 100% agree. MK64 has super janky physics in comparison to the other games, even SMK. Plus, I find it has this general vibe of creepiness to it, from the music to the 3d renders to the lifeless sprites with just voice clips coming out of them. At least the characters in the other games with sprites had at least 1 animation. MK64 sticks out like a sore thumb between SMK and MKSC. It may have set the standard for future games, but it has very little redeeming qualities itself. I would honestly say MK64 is my least favourite game of the series, including spinoffs.
Toads turnpike is so much fun i guarantee it inspires drunk driving. I don’t think this game has aged the best but i think it’s charming as hell. Something about it’s environments and goofy 3d character renders is just really charming to me.
Mario Kart 64 is an instant classic, in my opinion. However, I wish it had more to offer when it comes to playable characters and modes, especially when other racing games of its generation like Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing had a lot of single-player content to do. Even Sonic R had more unlockable content than MK64 did.
It's just crazy to me how most of the gaming community acts as if every other kart racer (except for the Mario Kart series) is bad. Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 didn't age well, Mario Kart: Super Circuit isn't good, and Mario Kart Tour sucks. It's really insane to me how people would write off games like Disney Speedstorm, KartRider: Drift, Lego 2K Drive, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, the Sumo Digital Sonic kart racing trilogy, Dreamworks All-Star Kart Racing, and Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2 & 3 as nothing more than just Mario Kart clones but still praise a game like Mario Kart 64 till this very day as if it's the second coming to christ. Those games are literally way better than this garbage. Even the original Crash Team Racing and Mickey's Speedway USA have aged pretty well. It just goes to show how biased the gaming community is. I also feel like Super Mario 64 didn't age well either. There's plenty of indie platformers that are way better, but since Mario is a more popular franchise, it will always win people over in the end.
Tbh i think MK64 is one of the few Mario Nintendo made i could say its a bad game. As unpopular as it can be i think i even enjoyed Hotel Mario more (made by Philips).
It held up as a historical icon, not as a game. It simply is not a good game. Compare Mario Kart 64 in 2006 to Mario Kart Wii in 2018 Both 10 years after their launch, but you’ll notice a significantly higher Wii following.
@@fxgspartanI get what you’re saying but the technology was vastly different. For was the tech was it’s held up fine; no one will argue that the Wii version has a lot more features and gameplay but 64 wasn’t a bad game, just lesser tech

@@d33riTz see Super Mario World has less technology and is still able to compete with modern video games. Technology is not a valid excuse for a poorly designed game. Mario Kart 64 is not played over Wii because it is not enjoyable to play a game where the controls are unusable on higher CC, the tracks are a nightmare, and the coms run hacks. Even the graphics fail at their job. And no, looking pretty is not the graphics job, that is a modern luxury. The graphics job is to tell the player what’s in front of them. And Mario Kart 64’s graphics often fail to do that while even older games’ graphics succeed at such.
It was a basic racing game that kept getting better and more refined or polished every iteration. That's how technology and ideas work crazy i know. But no one ever talks about the character sprites or the level design it was all about beating the snot out of your little bro in battle mode. If you and your brothers didn't tape cardboard to the crt so you couldn't cheat off each others screen then you've never played mk64
Well I wasn't expecting to be name dropped in this episode lol, but nice to see I had a positive impact on your experience! Also worth noting, the fake item box returned in every subsequent mario kart from 64 through wii, with the only exception being Super Circuit. Interestingly, the item is mostly functional in the code for super circuit with associated sprites but was left on the cutting room floor for whatever reason. Whenever you get around to playing super circuit again, I should not that game has drift boosting too, it's just really hard to tell if it's working lol.

I was surprised to learn a while back that F-Zero X remade MK64's Rainbow Road for the unlockable Joker Cup. It's... actually one of the better tracks in the game. The hazards it adds, the lack of guard rails, and F-Zero X's boost system make it a better F-Zero track than a Mario Kart track.
It really could have used an updated and optimized mid-cycle Deluxe version. But NIntendo was woefully understaffed in the N64 era and couldn't get such projects done.
Yeah. I've been out of the game for a while, so I decided to spend 160 dollars on an advertising campaign for a video I"ve been working on for a while. One I felt would be entry-friendly. I've done it in past videos that I had a lot of faith in, but this has been the most successful since it's TH-cam's very own advertising instead of Google Ads (which felt more designed for car dealers and local businesses than a Z List youtuber, trying to get a taste of the Y List). I disagree. I don’t even have nostalgia for it, as I first got my N64 in 2013, and I absolutely loved this game, and this is after already owning Super Circuit, DD, DS, Wii, and MK7. Double Dash was my favourite to play, but 64 was a close second. Mario Kart Wii is overrated trash.
I've been replaying Double Dash lately and have been really enjoying it. I can see why it's a favorite. It's challenging, but the challenge seems genuine. Mario Kart Wii is an old favorite of mine, but I'm kind of afraid to revisit it as my tolerance for BS item balancing isn't what it used to be. Plus, with Mario Kart 8, it's hard to justify going back to Wii. It's another game that more and more people are openly critical of. And with the Blue Shell spawn rate, I can definitely see why.
@@SQGReviewShow Yup that’s mostly why I dislike it. The item AI is ludacris, and the game just feels slow and boring.
