    Info about the "music physics lesson":
    The last chord is voiced 1-1-3-5, and in the overtone series, the first three different notes to occur are 1, 3, and 5 (if the 1 is the fundamental). If just the fundamental is played without the other three in this case, those notes will still be there (in their appropriate octaves), so your brain knows what it sounds like to hear them relative to the fundamental. So, when he sings the fundamental, your brain hears the overtones, and when he sings the three on top and they lock in extremely well to the overtones of the fundamental, it sounds like there's almost nothing separating those notes from the overtones. Because of this, in a way it just sounds like one fundamental note with enhanced overtones instead of actually four notes being sung, which of course there are.

    The overtone sequence does _not_ match the notes on a piano or keyboard. Keyboards are tuned to even tempered scale. What Tim and other good Barbershop singers do is just intonation.
    This is why Barbershop has to be a cappella. If they have to tune to most fixed-pitch instruments, it ruins the effect.
    Example. On the final chord, the Lead note, singing the perfect 5ᵗʰ interval which is the 3ʳᵈ harmonic, has to be tuned to approximate 1.96% of a standard 12-tone even-tempered (12tET) semitone (also known as 1.96 “cents”) _sharper_ than the 12tET version of that same note. That’s not a difference most people can hear by itself, but it makes a noticeable difference in a chord with other notes.
    The Tenor note is singing the major 3ʳᵈ interval of the chord, which is the 5ᵗʰ harmonic. Its tuning discrepancy is much larger: about 13.69¢ _flatter_ than the 12tET version! That _is_ a noticeable difference even by itself.
    Do you need to know all this to sing Barbershop well? No. The harmonic sequence is natural, and if you just trust your ears and brain and voice, it‘ll get close to the right pitch so long as you *do **_not_* try to learn your part by playing it on a keyboard or MIDI file (the latter can be used if special tuning codes are embedded in the MIDI) because those are the _wrong notes!_

    Phenomenal singing and range. But I'd love to hear less pitch correction, since it sort of sucks the soul out of the sound. On the final sustain, you can hear the tonal color shift and warble, but the pitch remains perfectly on. This makes me think he's touching up each performance in post with some auto-tune. It would sound so much better with the subtle flaws of his uncorrected takes.

It reminds me of the singing in kids shows, like Daniel Tiger. I'm sure this guy is a great singer and can tune just fine in normal contexts, intonation is extremely difficult in multitracking, especially if you're trying to nail just intonation like in barbershop. I'm kind of astonished that he would claim that he does no pitch correction whatsoever when from a listening perspective, the sound of pitch correction seems undeniably present. I always understood the channel to be really showing off his arranging chops since his singing has a lot of production gloss on top of it.

    Not to nitpick too much, but you say he is singing a 1-1-3-5 chord which are the exact overtones of the bottom fundamental so it might as well be just the one bass note. That’s not quite right, since the overtone series in direct order would be 1-1-5-1-3. That is, the consecutive intervals between notes in the series go octave, fifth, fourth, M third, (and then the next would be a minor third).
    You can verify this yourself in a couple ways: first if you have a tool that can generate specific frequencies, start with a fundamental frequency like 200 Hz, then get integer multiples of the fundamental to get a series that goes 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000… these are the overtones of the fundamental.
    Second, you can take a guitar or violin string and measure the part of the string under tension (or build your own with a string and two pegs). Pluck the string ‘open’ (1x length) then pinch at fractional intervals to hear the overtones: 1/2x, 1/3x, 1/4x, 1/5x,…

    • @jasonfieler
      @jasonfieler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, I agree! I didn't mean that those were the overtones in order, I was just saying that 1, 3, and 5, are the first three scale tones to appear in the overtone series due to the whole number intervalic ratios which cause it, but thank you for point it out very clearly and I'll make an edit in the description to clarify :)
