    Love the fact you remembered that the shield Frieren used takes a ton of Mana, that’s actually why Denken was surprised, against any other mage in the exam you won’t be able to hold that shield up against his fire tornado. Denken made smart decisions, he knew he couldn’t go back and forth with Frieren in terms of mana but he doesn’t know the mana he sees is suppressed

    coolest thing about how they setup the barrier shattering, is that Frieren since ep18 has been telling Kanne and Lawine to not do anything but observation on the first day, and that is because Frieren knew she had to take down the barrier for the girls to be able to win a fight, and she needed the entire first day to understand how to deconstruct the barrier, and that is confirmed by Sense, who says Frieren has been analyzing the barrier since day1.
    Also loved Serie's reaction to that, she was pretty happy, she that "you grew up a bit, little girl" smile on her.

    I watched a video where someone broke down the frames of the scene in which Frieren releases the beam. In the final frame before she does her silhouette turns into Serie. I think this is because resolving the barrier is like a math equation - you start from the answer and go backwards until you reach the beginning of it (Serie).

    I really like the way that magic is explained here. This is the only show I can think of where the type of magic people use actually changes over time. In most fantasy shows, it's always "older magic = better", but in this one the magical meta evolves in a very natural manner.
    The last generation of mages learned to use basic attack and defense magic, so their focus was on slowly wearing down their opponents until they ran out of mana. But then as time passed, you get all the newer generation mages who figured out that you can overwhelm basic defense magic with physical based attacks, which caused a lot of modern mages to focus on blitzing down their opponents instead.
    You can really see the difference between an older mage like Denken who still uses a lot on basic offensive and defensive magic, but has an ultimate attack that makes a fire tornado, and a younger mage like Kanne who's so overspecialized that she can't really fight effectively unless it's raining or she's near a water source. Of course, Frieren and Fern flip this meta on its head because they're both just so powerful that they can overwhelm modern mages without relying on anything other than basic magic.

    • @luigimanzelli3786
      @luigimanzelli3786 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      well to be fair Frieren kinda said that modern mages are weaker, i think mostly because the last 80 years have been peaceful, without needing to fight for your life you won't be as strong, and Frieren also told Fern "basic magic is enough to defeat mages of this era", basically she was shit talking them, so yeah, old = better still pretty much :D

    • @darkgenesis342
      @darkgenesis342 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@luigimanzelli3786There are still some improvements by modern magic , It’s stronger against shields and it uses less mana, however some spells lack the fundamentals making them weaker. Older attack spells are still lethal though and in the hands of battle hardened older mages you’re most likely going to lose .I actually love how it isn’t completely black and white

    • @feral_fenrir
      @feral_fenrir 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's a lot more realistic depiction of magic and its advancement. There are specific types of magic that have advanced, wherever there's utility like flying, defenses etc. But many magics have been lost to time as well like magic useful in dungeon raiding, etc.
      It's like some random ancient techniques which we as humans have lost from prehistoric cultures.

    • @giantWario
      @giantWario 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@luigimanzelli3786 It's not that they're weaker, it's that they're overspecialized. Remember that what every mages call ''basic offensive and defensive magic'' is actually Zoltraak and a shield made specifically to be able to withstand Zoltraak. Zoltraak was the spell so overpowered that every human mages had to come together to copy it and make defenses against it. It's insanely powerful but most mages treat it as ''basic'' because it's easy to learn and it's not flashy. But it's really all any mage should need when fighting. Just think about Ehre for a second, it doesn't matter how well she can use those boulders, there's no way she could do as much damage with them as Fern and Frieren could when they're devastating entire landscape with Zoltraak.
      Basically, it's not that old is better it's that Zoltraak is better and most mages sleep on it.

    • @luigimanzelli3786
      @luigimanzelli3786 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@giantWario there are a couple contradiction in your argument, you said :"Zoltraak is better and most mages sleep on it." which is basically equal to say that old is better :D
      But to be fair there is also a counter argument, while it's true that Zoltraak causes massive destruction, that's not necessarily relevant, we learn from Frieren that the clothes that mages use are enchanted, so that Zoltraak is not longer deadly, at the same time, i doubt you get any physical armor, so if you get thrown a rock, you will suffer the same damage as any ordinary person, and also, as Richter said, the most commonly used defensive spell doesn't work well against physical objects.
      However mana efficiency is also something to keep into consideration for humans, they can't just spam spells, Zoltraak seems to be also spend very little mana, considering Fern used it dozens of times against Lugner, and wasn't even tired, meanwhile se gets tired after keeping the shield up for a few seconds.

  • @jmhaces
    @jmhaces 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    Don't fall for storytelling clichés. Serie was already an almost all-powerful mage when she taught Flamme and she's been doing her thing for an extra 1,000 years while Frieren puttered around collecting folk spells. Frieren might be more powerful than the proctors who thought Serie's barrier couldn't be destroyed, but there's no reason to assume she's as powerful or more powerful than Serie just because she's the main character and she was able to take down the barrier. Genau said nobody could take it down because nobody is more powerful than Serie because that's how he saw things, but it doesn't mean you have to actually be stronger than Serie to take down the barrier. I'd say being the apprentice to Serie's own apprentice who loved to make barriers is enough to know how to go about it.

    • @Ryodraco
      @Ryodraco 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      One could also word it as being good enough to analyze and deconstruct Serie's barrier spell, that perhaps Frieren exceeds her in this form of analysis but not in power (after all, brute force/power can't break it)
      Also, to clarify, Frieren lived in obscurity for most of the past thousand years, doing little but training her mana (she also fought demons for a time, but as she says when Himmel tries to recruit her, she hadn't done that for five hundred years). She apparently didn't start collecting folk spells until after she joined Himmel's group (her noting their praise for her magic is what motivates her current hobby), or at least didn't do it much.

      The way the episode frames it is misleading. When Genau says "Do you really think there is a mage in this world greater than Serie?" it cuts to Frieren, the goal is clearly to make us think Frieren is stronger. (Spoiler: Even if she isn't, not even close.)

    The thing with the barrier is that they said it couldn't be broken *by brute force.* Frieren didn't use brute force - I like to think of what she did as like... resonant harmonics? She didn't just punch a hole in the barrier, so it wasn't like she just made an anti-barrier magic laser. The way it shattered seemed to me more like she overloaded it until it vibrated itself into pieces, which is also why the usual swirly aurora-like colors that are faintly visible in those barriers were forced into those vivid bands.

    Hey Prez, Cara! I love it when you analyze the series you watch deeply, including animation. So, here's an animation tidbit for you:
    During the beginning of the fight between Frieren and Denken, Frieren immediately fired her Zoltraak. One to the side, and several volleys at the front. Denken blocks one, flies away and blocks the rest.
    Here's the kicker, the only one he blocked (if you count the amount of beams) were the Zoltraak she fired from the front. One beam (the one fired off to the side) remained unaccounted for. As we have seen the episode where Sein faced off a Chaos Flower, Frieren is able to change the trajectory of Zoltraak.
    So the beam she fired off to the side was used in the counterattack against Denken!
