- In July 2024, Smith & Wesson decided to introduce a new version of the Bodyguard 2.0 that could very well be the best all-around micro carry pistol on the market today. In this video, we discuss the features of this new pistol, compare it in size, weight, and functionality to its major competitors, and explain why this is different and will likely become the most popular new concealed carry pistol in 2024.

I carry the Bodyguard for years, the 2.0 is the greatest improvement of any product out there!
The 2 main things:
More rounds 6-10
Better trigger!
All for the same size! Just like magic.
It also has a better gripp.
This was the most in depth thorough review that I've seen yet, on this pistol.
Cool, finally a review of the manual safety version of the Bodyguard 2.0.
Yeah buddy. Wild how many people are willing to put a single action pistol in their pants with no safety. :D
@@Chingon6969 Yeah, with a 2 & a half pound trigger!
I'm afraid that it might be the best range gun you can carry in your pocket.
@@Chingon6969I do it all the time?
It was the only version I could find locally. Bo big deal, I'll just leave it off.
@@5Ring That's what most people did with the original Shields, which all had safeties, and it worked out fine.
Apex quality trigger is a perfect description of the trigger. I don’t normally want a TS on most of my pistols. But with this little guy the TS is the right choice for me. It gives me options. And options are good.
Nice. This little BG2.0 is seriously going to change the pocket guns. I’ve been a real believer in the LCP line for a long time. I’ve had every version of the LCP. When I saw this, I knew I had to pick it up. Those LCP’s are staying in the safe, or someone else’s safe from now on. It is light years ahead of most of the competition. Living in Mesa AZ, I use pocket carry almost year round. Being a 10 round gun, and so easy to shoot, it’s going to be my year round gun.
I’ve put 600 rounds of mixed FMJ/JHP though this so far in a little over a week. That’s probably more than needed, but I wanted to make sure I could carry this with confidence. I do trust this pistol. Great review sir, thanks for the extra comparisons. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
After firing the bodyguard 2.0 the LCP stays in the safe. The difference in ergos alone are remarkable
I will never understand why people act as just because a firearm has a safety. You have to use it. It's there for extra safety support. That's it. Either use it or don't. It's nice to have for that extra peace of mind that you know for sure that if you have it activated, that firearm definitely won't have an accidental fire.
I’ll take mine with the manual safety please.
By far this is the best review I've seen on this gun. All aspects were covered and clearly explained.
Good Luck!
Great sensible calm review that hits all the points. Well done. Most gun videos are awful.
My S&W Bodyguard 2.0 has 725 rounds through it. and all of it flawless with the Fiocchi.. That is the only ammo I run through this gun, even when I carry.. I've tested others, but I prefer the Fiocchi
Which Fiocchi round are you using exactly? I have had 100% reliability with PMC Bronze
@ Range Dynamics FMJ 380/95/960/50R
I picked one up today at my local gun store. I can't believe how light it feels and the size is ridiculous compared to my standard M&P's. The slide is definitely stiff and hopefully will get lighter as it breaks in. I'm in shorts and polo's/t-shirts year round so this will end up being my daily carry pistol. It's light enough that I'll actually carry it while cycling as well.
The first video i have seen where you actually mention what the slide material is, thank you!!!
TY for a well done video. I was going to get the manual safety model, but went without it. This will be my first striker pocket carry and I absolutely plan on buying a kydex holster to cover that trigger. Waiting on someone to release one soon. Stay safe.
So I started with the original shield 9 for ccw then moved to sig 9mm and then finally to the lcp max because I'm in FL in shorts most of the time and needed something super light weight. I have never gotten over my love for the shield though. That gun with the apex trigger was simply amazing. I ended up giving it to my father as a trade. As soon as I saw the bodyguard 2.0 I knew this was the perfect carry gun for me and ordered it immediately. Basically took the shield and shrunk it to fit my current needs and essentially threw in the apex trigger for free. Can't wait to pick this up this week!
How is it for pocket carry compared to the lcp max?
@tedjerdee1028 it's actually way better than the Lcp Max. With the 10 round mag it fits in jogger sweats with the zip up pocket from old navy that I wear often. I use the ruger fabric pocket holster that came with my lcp max. Literally looks like a wallet
Such great attention to detail and professional presentation. Subscribed. ty
Thanks for the review. Good info, and appreciate how you presented it.
Fantastic video, especially talking about what ammo is best, and no plus P ammo. Thank you.
I appreciate your thoughtful commentary in addition to the general review.
The best round in these .380’s in my opinion is the standard pressure hardcast from Underwood - since you are getting maximum penetration even through heavy clothing and other materials. As always GREAT VIDEO - stay safe and be BLESSED!!!
I agree - as long as it feeds 100% reliable. I haven't tested any yet in the 2.0 but when I do I will post and update.
I’d just stick to something equivalent to the Speer Lawman 95 grain TMJ in .380. Reliability is # 1, penetration is # 2. You have 10 rounds, as long as the pistol functions. I think that will give anyone the capability to handle most situations. People put too much emphasis on bullet expansion in 380. It most likely won’t happen below 1000 fps in these short barrels, so it’s just a less reliable FMJ that you won’t shoot much because it’s like $30.00 for twenty rounds. You can get the Lawmen at Target Sport delivered to your door for $15.00 a box of fifty. Use what you carry. YMMV.
@@131601nope, stopping power > penetration. just because it penetrates 11.9 inches instead of the minimum 12 does not mean they're going to just shrug it off, it's a bullet.
@@ventxretstopping power is a myth for pistols lol.

I had a feeling when this released we'd be hearing from you shortly thereafter..... Great review as always!
Thanks - I only post reviews for guns I like and lately I haven’t tested anything that I like as much as this one :-)
Nicely balanced review! Best review of it I've seen.
That's a really light trigger! Great for the range. Questionable for close contact defense.
S&W BG looks great it’s too bad the G42 is left so far behind with 6 rounds.
If they would have shortened the barrel and created a steel double stack mag for it they could have improved it…typical Glock
Agreed. I've been carrying my G42 for a long time now, but have never felt great about the fact that I was only carrying a max of 8 rounds (I have six, seven, and eight round mags). But with the eight round mag in it, it became so large I might as well be carrying a 9mm. My G42 will be replaced as soon as my local GS gets the BG 2.0 in stock.
@@floorpizza8074 little over a year I gave the G42 to a friend of mine, so I purchased a LCP max I carry it with a 12 round magazine I tell you the truth it’s exactly what I was looking for in a pocket gun. I had some issues with it feed certain hollow points send it to Ruger had it back in 5 business days they replaced the barrel and never had an issue since then. Now with the new BG I definitely want to see it in person don’t know if I will purchase it because it’s around $400 and then spend money on more ammo (308 is expensive) to break it in and get use to it, but if the G42 had a 10 round capacity I would never had gotten rid of it.
@@Mike-4547 "but if the G42 had a 10 round capacity I would never had gotten rid of it." Yup, I feel exactly the same way. I LOVE the way the G42 shoots. Would be nice if Glock would update it to stack-and-a-half for larger capacity.
I'm going to the range tomorrow to rent an LCP Max. They are supposed to be getting a BG 2.0 in today, and if they do, it'll be available to rent tomorrow. Hope it works out that way, as it would sure be nice to do a side by side comparison.
@@floorpizza8074 I don’t want to sound like a Glock fanboy, especially when I only own two, they are the G19 gen4, and the G43xmos, but I shoot them so well, and the G42 was no exception, the only thing I changed was the sights. Anyway good luck tomorrow but I think you will pick the S&W, it’s something about their design of the grip that is very comfortable. I had the original Shield sold it because of the weak capacity, and the S&W M&P 40 full size hated the hinge trigger, and the caliber, I’d rather have a full size 1911 in 45acp.
Great video Bro especially abought the safety!!!!!!!!
Excellent presentation.
As I pull the gun out of my pocket with right hand I straddle the slide with left thumb and first finger to work the safety with both. It's easier for me.
I have the model with no safety and really like it. Unfortunately with the trigger safety being the width of the trigger you have to be real careful, especially if carrying it in your pocket, as I can literally pull the trigger using my fingernail, and I have short fingernails! I'm not sure why they didn't just use a trigger safety like every other trigger safety on a striker fired pistol. But that's my only complaint. As far as the grittilyness, I popped the firing pin safety out, put it in my drill and got the burr off the end and polished it up. It is extremely smooth now. Thanks for the great videos!
Nice review! Bought one. Shoots well. Hard but possible to rack. Difficulty worth it for greatly improved recoil over other micro 380s. Recoil is similar to my Kel-Tec P32 in 32 auto! No reliability problems with first trip to the range. Mags are hard for me to load, impossible without a speed loader. Working on learning an easier way to load. Doing hand exercises. Armalaser is estimating 6 months before they come out with their instant on laser. Addition of the laser will make the SW BG 2.0 a good choice for me. Due to accuracy and less recoil, the LCP Max has been dethroned!
Great review! I hope S&W offers a .22lr version soon!
Excellent review, thanks
Nice video !
Well done content
What a great pocket pistol. Outstanding.
Great content, thanks for the actual size comparison.
It's good to see you posting again! I bought a M&P15 Sport II after reading your review.
They seem to have made a great gun with this one.Going to sell like hotcakes!Ive been thinkingI could go the rest of my life without seeing another “new”striker fired polymer gun. But…then this comes along .don’t own any gun in 380..YET..Will in about a year or so.Break in ,I like to mix a few drops of oil in with some fitz to speed up the process. Then blast the grit out with break cleaner & or sonically ,clean it lube it correctly & ready to go.
S&W has the best slide finishes.
You think better than Glock as far as rust resistance??
Just bought one for $400 flat. It replaced the original bodyguard. Absolutely love it. Running Underwood xtreme penetrator 90 grain +p.
Does this pistol have the long trigger pull like the LCPS
@@georgemontgomery9448 no it's a super crisp trigger pull. 90⁰ wall, break, and a short reset. Only thing I had to do, as others have said, check your sights outta the box. I had to move my front sight over.
That's very interesting about Fiocchi...I've had that same issue with the Ruger LCP Max not cycling that one ammunition well, everything else it shoots fine.
I saw on another video that Fiocchi .380 ammo is a tiny bit larger (I don't know if in length or circumference) than other .380 brands, and thus doesn't feed properly in some pistols. Better to just not get it; there are other brands that work just fine.
I actually like the manual safety on the smaller S&W guns.
The safety is so tough to actuate or disable it cannot be flipped in daily carry. So I just carry with it off.
The safety comes in handy when servicing or unloading the gun, I find little guns are REAL easy to flag yourself or your fingers. The manual safety helps you safely handle these itty bitty micro guns. Just turn it back off after loading up the gun & reholstering
I agree. I have the Shield with manual safety. I love how it is for the exact reasons/use-case you stated.
Not only the stiffer to actuaye, but also that it is flush, not protruding, makes it less prone to accidental actuation, for us who carry round in chamber, safety off.
👍🏼🤟🏼👏🏼🕺
Oil it up good and take the time to work it up and down awhile. Mine free up good.
After buying and shooting it when we got home I asked my wife to wrack the slide, instead of just wracking it she locked the slide back. With no problem.
great video, thanks!
When asked about safety the sales guy said no, guess who's stuck with a TS?... 😂
Get rid of the FMJs for everyday carry. The best defensive .380 ammo is Underwood 90g Xtreme Penetrator. There’s no need for the +P version.
Underwood 68g Xtreme Defender +P is good if you have a firearm that can shoot +P and has at least a 3.5 inch barrel. Otherwise, it’s not going to penetrate much more than a Hornady Critical Defense hollow point would, but the Defender will still be more reliable since it cannot fail at expanding.
The Penetrator feeds better than the Defender in some older pistols due to being closer to FMJ shape. It shouldn’t be a problem in any modern pistols that are designed to shoot hollow points though.
Are the Underwoods so much better than FMJs to justify the much higher price?
For the bodyguard 2.0 2.75" barrel would you recommend the 90g Xtreme Penetrator standard pressure or the 68gr Xtreme Defender standard pressure?
@@guitarthrasher81 Penetrator in standard pressure. I would not use Defender in standard pressure, and I would not use the Defender +P in less than a 3.5 inch barrel.
Excellent review thank you. Purchased mine two
Days ago. Fantastic. I have large hands this gun works really well even with the short magazine and a pinky underneath it. Amazing. Same for the ladies and my wife has small hands. If you can find them take the wife and there’s a good chance she’ll buy matching. Absolutely perfect pocket gun or realistically even a small Purse weapon . Do you know you’ve got something that you haven’t shot or perhaps never shot stashed away. Take it with you sell it off to the freight costs put a smile on the ladies face
Mine has a trigger pull weight of 4 lb 6.5 oz, most reviews I've seen are also over 4 lbs.
I believe S&W has hit another homerun with this offering.
I ran my Lyman gauge for almost 10 pulls and the numbers didn’t lie - it is a great trigger
@@AZTrigger mine is also around 4.5. you might have gotten a nice "pc" one haha
Here is my Lyman Gauge on it: th-cam.com/users/shortsI6PVYeBIPK4?si=rnC1XsOTuB5umzNV
In his video, he's measuring from the absolute bottom tip of the trigger, not where your finger actually would be.
@@highxj I tested at the bottom and middle of the trigger - it had nearly identical results on the lyman guage.
Only about 2 mm taller than the LCP MAX, only about 5/16 inches longer. But with a decent beaver tail, and much better grip ergonomics. Plus the perception is a higher quality of materials and design.
Is it?
I’ve never owned a Smith & Wesson gun
But I have owned a Smith & Wesson pocket knife, which did not hold up well at all
Should I not compare apples and oranges? I was so disappointed with the knife. It turned me off from the idea of buying one of their guns.
@@garrett9564 -- Maybe S&W got a good deal on some Chinese-made knives.
😮😊
The Ruger LCP Max, is a great pocket pistol; hard to beat, the Bodyguard is great too. It depends on you, maybe your hand size has something to do with it. I had the old LCP, very reliable, dependable, I didn’t like the trigger on the old one, but the new one is great. Ruger LCP Max is thinner and smaller than the S&W Bodyguard.
The bg 2.0 is better for me but I do like my max. The half inch in length doesn't affect me at all and they are nearly identical in width. The better trigger and ergonomic feel make the bg 2.0 my choice.
@ it would be great if they would make it in the 9mm
I wish I could remove the paddle safety or get a different trigger on my BG 2.0. I hate the paddle but still love the weapon it's actually amazing. 600 rounds not one misfire or issue!
I literally was having trouble trying to choose between the LCP max, the air light revolver, and the Glock 42. Then the 2.0 came out and from what everyone says that should be the one I should probably get.
With today's technology in ammo, I would never carry FMJ for self-defense. I EDC the LCP Max and carry Underwood Xtreme Defender or Defiant Munitions TCX. Both consistently penetrate and Defiant is the best expanding ammo on the market.
If you are in the penetration camp have you thought about running Underwood or G9 ammo?

Wow the dimensions of this pistol are very deceptive. I thought it was closer to p365 size but the grip looks so much slimmer. This could be a game changer for people with little hands.
How big does your gun have to be in order not to be a fire and flee; Never heard this phrase before?
Got one today with safety and that safety is very very stif , too stiff! Hopefully it smoothes out
Same here. I’m gonna try a little oil
The safety on mine was almost impossible to move out of the box, but after cycling it about 100 times, it is signicantly improved. I suspect it will continue to improve wth more use. Oil made no difference.
It will loosen up with use
My manual says the +p is fine, avoid the +p+, if there is such a thing
I ordered one today from Academy but it had a manual safety so I canceled it. Does feel good in the hand though itty bitty will get one w/out a safety once one comes along.
I didn’t know it wasn’t rated for +p. I shot some underwood extreme defenders +p the other day. It handled it good
None of them are. I've shot a lot of +P stuff and my own equivalent handloads in the LCP Max without issue other than being very unpleasant. It has significantly thinner chamber walls than the BG 2.0.
@@highxjJeez, I already get showered with smoke and some powder with normal rounds out of the Max 😂
You don't know what sort of stress you are putting on the gun with the +P rounds. There may now be tiny cracks that will grow the more the gun is fired, until one day it breaks and you are stuck with a paper-weight, if not an injury.
was at the gun shop last monday, they had it and i passed on it because it didnt have the manual safety, they sold it Tuesday for $500
6:50 Thank you SO much for comparison the 9mm 365. That’s my current carry and I’m curious if it’s worth adding the bg 2.0 into the rotation for gym and running and biking carry. Thank you!
Well, that does it. I guess I'll wait till one of these float down.
Seeing the side profile of Bodyguard and LCP Max magazine - Single Stack with wider base - would manufacturers eventually make Micro 1911's with a modified frame to accommodate new mags?
Seeing a Hi Capacity Sig P238, P938 or other Mustang style pistols might sell well. Slightly thicker grip will help handling.
So which is easier to work, the safety, or the slide?
The safety does become easier to work over time. After cycling it about 100 times, it is noticably easier, however it is still tighter than I would like. I expect it to continue to improve with use. It was almost impossible to move when new out of the box. So new out of the box, the slide is easier to work.
The gunsmith at the shop said the slide will be noticabily easier after firing 200 to 300 rounds.
So I got a RUGER SECURITY .380 for my wife to carry and she is very happy with it. I would be interested in knowing how the new SMITH & WESSON 2.0 compares to it.
I have both. It is MUCH smaller with a better trigger. The security 380 weighs 20 ounces, the Bodyguard 2.0 weighs 9.8 ounces. They are in 2 completely different classes in my opinion. Almost like a Glock 19 vs a P365 as far as size difference
I have a Security 380, but I don't carry it; it serves as my home defense pistol.
So, you would get more penetration with the FMJ than a hollow point?
@@Offsides09 that’s the problem with the 380 - it’s either penetration or expansion - you can’t have both. That is why I only shot FLM in 380.
@@AZTrigger Thank you for the response. I’m a relatively new gun owner and would have gone with the hollow point based on my limited experience with a 9mm.
@@AZTriggerkinda new myself only a couple years in, would it be dumb to mix those, every other one, FMJ-Holoow point, to get maximum effects, best of both worlds so to speak.
@@guitarplayer4429 -- In shorter-barreled .380s like the BG not enough velocity is generated to enable the hollow-point rounds to expand as they ought, so using them would be a waste of money. For longer-barreled .380s, like the Bersa Thunder or Security 380, hollow-points may work just fine.
@@gregb6469thanx, I don’t think I even new the gx4 existed when I wrote that, if I get one it will be that one, it’s got really good reviews
You're much better off using Underwood Extreme Defenders than fmj
Why are you "much better off" by using underwood as opposed to a hot 100 grain fmj flat nose??? Both cut a clean hole and penetrate
Ten rounds of 380 delivered accurately in a few seconds likely kind of makes up for being weaker than 9mm.
Something ignored by most is the effect of lesser powered rounds like the 380 being placed on target rapidly. The hydrostatic shocking power increases geometrically.
Well, at least I can use my LCP Max pocket holster with my new Bodyguard 2.0…
The S&W BG 2.0 and the Ruger Security 380 are the best 380s on the planet, hands down😊, test them urself and find out ✊️🇺🇲🙏
Have you tried the 365-380? Very sweet and fun to shoot pistol and handles +P stuff easily. It's quite a bit chunkier than the BG 2.0 though..
That’s not a misfire that’s a negligent discharge!
And if the safety was easier to use, then people would complain about inadvertently knocking it off or on.
It can still be as stiff but they didn’t need to make it so flush. I have a bunch of the M&P pistols, all with safeties. The safeties in the subcompact, compact, and full size are obnoxiously big, way too easy to actuate, both because of the huge ledge on them and the relative ease of manipulating. Then the Shield and Bodyguard safeties are flush and heavier to move. There is certainly a middle ground there. Keep the stiffness but add a little ledge to the safety, like the one on the Ruger SR9 and LC9. Those are easy to
Manipulate, have a hex positive click, and never accidentally came off. When I rack the slide in my full size with the safety on I frequently flick the safety off accidentally. But I don’t carry those guns so no big deal.
For a 4 pound or less trigger on a striker fired gun, I insist on a safety. I easily swipe it off as I draw it, but I admit I have debated with holstering the gun in the kydex holster, flicking the safety off, and then putting the holster on. Never needed to do that with my LC9S.
@@kbm-zw5jd That's a lot of good info in one comment.

Definitely the manual safety version for me.
No offense but it's 2.0It is not2.0It's 2 point Oh No offense I don't know why but I just hit me wrong when you said it
Or we can call it 'version 2'.
Who can talk almost 20 minutes about that little handgun?
Non safety model in a Kydex holster with a piece of leather flex glued & trimmed to size on the back w mono block clip is how I’m going to carry it. Good looking gun. EVERY ONE LIKES A GOOD LOOKING GUN.like to see them make it I 32 & 22. Get even more capacity & shot placement with 32 I think.?.? Would be little 32 S&Ws coming full circle kinda.?.?.
If it fits your hand this is the best carry gun. People who knock the caliber are morons….you want rounds on target period and this caliber is far more accurate
this is a great firearm for the women.
2 pound 9 ounce trigger? That's hairpin level. Idk if that's good for the average person especially in self defense situations.
It’s great for the person who trains and learns how to use it. I dont want a heavy pull weight in an actual self defense situation, I want to be able to fire easily and rapidly to neutralize the threat asap.
FMJ or slef defense ... NO
I want JHP and i want a wound Channel ...
With its shorter barrel the BG likely won't generate enough velocity to enable your HP to expand like you want it to, turning it into an expensive FMJ.
Condition (1) is the ""Only"" way I would ever carry ANY Striker-Fired Pistol...
👍😎
Two point o
Fiocci ammo sucks, I bought a case and the bullet depth was all over the place.
The new Bodyguard is a very nice gun and I like it a lot compared to my lcp max but if I’m being completely honest it’s too big to be a pocket pistol. When I put my lcp max in my pocket it looks like a cellphone. When I put my bodyguard in my pocket it looks like a gun. Nice but a tad too big to be a pocket pistol imho.
You say fire and flee where are you fleeing to prison
It’s got that piss-ant thumb safety that you can’t get your thumb on? If you can’t ride it, it’s useless.
I can’t believe you have rounds near the pistols…they could load themselves and shoot me through the inter webs!
Waiting for the 9mm version
Why are you waiting it’s called shield plus been out for years 9mm isn’t getting this small
Doubt you will see it - the current platform is too small and light for 9mm.
its 2 POINT 0
Break-in period is dumb. There shouldn't be such a thing. It should just work properly out of the box.
Most handguns are manufactured and shipped in a way to help prevent corrosion - not to adequately lubricate during firing. With the exception of lower-tolerance handguns like a Glock, I would never start firing a new pistol without a through cleaning and proper lubrication first.
Only a fool would carry this pistol in a pocket holster or IWB , with a sub 3lb trigger. S&W will be sued on the models without safeties and then will upgrade to ambi safety , extended , on all models
I'm glad it doesn't have a grip safety; I hate those things!
Thumb safety ewww
They make a version without it.
@@jsedbe0624 I know I have one
The barrel is too long for the intended use. If you want longer barrels, get a micro 9. LCP is very light and short barrel is perfect, IMO.
@@1yehny The LCP II has a 2.75” barrel, the BG2.0 has a 2.75” barrel. The LCP Max has a 2.8” barrel. To each their own, but barrel length shouldn’t be a consideration between the LCP and BG2.0. Just giving some information.
So did you run what matters the most, hollowpoints?
After years of shooting hollow point 380's, I don't shoot them anymore. Most never expand correctly or even at all and never feed reliably like the FMJ's do. The velocity is simply too slow out of most short barreled micros which is a big part of the problem. This is just my preference but I can assure you I am not alone on this...
@@AZTrigger There is a gazillion ballistics tests on Youtbe that show great performance of .380 hollowpoints, while fmj runs off into the sunset to kill innocents. As a cops to use these as back ups maybe they can be exonerated for a civilian casualty but not the average joe.
