- The actor and star of Christophe Honoré’s MARCELLO MIO talks about the power of political films disguised as comedies, such as TO BE OR NOT TO BE and DIVORCE ITALIAN STYLE; shares her love for Japanese horror cinema; and reminisces about what made her father, Marcello Mastroianni, such a revolutionary actor.
Chiara Mastroianni is that cool artsy aunt that gets political at family dinners
Chiara Mastroianni looks like if Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve had a baby
It's almost like they're her parents or something.
Coincidentally, Chiara and Catherine Deneuve both did voices for Persepolis, where they played daughter and mother.
Chiara is wearing the same iconic glasses that her father wore in Fellini's "8 1/2". So there's that. And she definitely has her mother's beauty 😍 Absolutely stunning.
Looks more like Marcello
@@Duke_of_Prunes She looks exactly like her father, and that's still beautiful.
I loved that she picked "A Special Day" with her father and Sophia. That film is just stunning, one of Ms. Loren's favorites and best performances. And Marcello was incredible. Grazie, Chiara!
I saw A special day as a kid on our French tv and still remember after all these years the choked-up feeling I felt during the movie and how I was doing my best to hide my feelings from all my older siblings and my parents. The humanity in Sophia Loren's eyes in one of the last scenes is so heartbreaking.
Its such a special movie
He's amazing in that one. I also really liked him in Antonione's La Notte with Jeanne Moreau and Monica Vitti.
Damn, Marcello had strong genes.
Thanks god!
@@electrikalstormwhy thanks god?
@@RandyWhite-e6t Because god decides.
What about Catherine Deneuve? What a combination of genes!
@ her genes didn’t even try
Imagine the influences she has had in her formation as an actor? Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroiani? What a pedigree and what qualifications to give her opinions on films. This presentation is really a gift. Thank you
Yes, Chiara won the lottery. Both parents are not only attractive but immensely talented. She definitely has that spark. What a classy lady. Such refined taste. I could listen to her for hours.
Imagine growing up with Marcello Mastroianni as your dad.
Imagine having Catherine Deneuve as your mom!
Prob not fun
Bucket list dinner party guest! I can listen to her for hours and hours! Such a great and special insight about her father. Touching.
YES! You understand! That is what is missing in so much american women. Beauty and grace mixed with intelligence and personality and a love and understanding..FOR THE ARTS. She has fantastic insight. Thank you Josephpalis for what you said. How come I don't have friends [ the less than two that I have ] that think the way you do. I feel like I am surrounded by brutish apes.
Divorce Italian Style is amazing; top-shelf example of dark comedy and razor-sharp writing. I had no idea that Marcello's voice was dubbed over early in his career; that's a very interesting bit of trivia! Thanks very much for this one, Criterion.
Man her parents are possibly one of the greatest power couples in history
They split up after only four years, when Chiara was around two years old.
underrated are the movies with Mastroianni/Deneuve couple directed by Marco Ferreri. People should check them out if they can find them.
I love how she resembles her father and is always advocating for his works.
her comment about being French and talking about strikes was so funny I like her a lot
I could spend hours listening to her talking about her dad 💚
if so, check out the movie in wich she pays hommage to him.❤
with you, "noeliacomesana"..
she's really a cinema nerd. Also nice from her mentioning a bit of socio-political history of modern Italy. She's definitely the best cultural ambassador of italo-french relationships (way more authentic than Carla Bruni :P)
I love how genuine she is. I feel I can learn so much from her. Of course I can. She has acting in her veins.
Speaking of Hitchcock i must recommend the rope. Very simple plot and great acting its almost like a stage play where everyone is on one location for most of the film. As an added bonus it was also technically challenging but i can let criterion fans look that up for themselves if they are interested. I enjoy how Chiara just picks films that is what i like too see. No limits just go wild when you have the chance.
The daughter of two of the biggest icons of European cinema and her taste in films in simply incredible!
I was at the Fellini Museum recently & they had an exhibition on Marcello Mastroianni at the Palazzo Fulgor section, which was fantastic. I love Chiara's taste & knowledge of her choices, & could listen to hear tell stories about her father for ages.
The Organizer is probably my favourite performance of his, but not my favourite film. It is excellent though.
You are UNDOUBTEDLY your father’s daughter! 🌹
She is most charming and her english is superb!
Perfect choises! "A special day" I saw... Very unique and sensitive film ! Thanks Chiara M.♥️ !!
A charming and genuine lady.
Things to Come! What a great donkey to pin the tail on. Early directing effort from famed art director William Cameron Menzies. Really sweet mid-30's sci-fi and social commentary. Raymond Massey and Ralph Richardson. Epic in its sweep across time. Love it!
She’s the daughter of the legendary Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni?!?!
That’s awesome.
And her mother is Catherine Deneuve!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Ms. Mastrioanni's picks! Most of them I have seen (often several times) so I could very much relate to her remarks. A thoroughly engaging candid stroll across half a dozen films from someone born of the film world. As someone earlier remarked, I'd love to have her as a dinner guest.
I Compagni is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life. How important is to have a political mind. Thank you very much, Chiara❤
On the subject of The Night Of The Hunter, I was watching the French film Les Diables (The Devils) fairly recently & was surprised to hear they'd sampled 'Once Upon a Time There Was a Pretty Fly' to play during the opening credits. One of those cool bits of trivia you discover & recognise as you watch more & more films.
On a separate note, I'm eager to see Criterion upgrade one of my favourite of her father's films from DVD to HD/UHD, Visconti's White Nights. One of the titles top of my wishlist for such treatment. 🤞
Love the way she talked about her father, and how politically conscious she is ❤ the random pick was perfection too
Cure 1997. That movie brings up some memories.
I don't own the Criterion Version but I have the DVD from the AsiaMania brand back in the 2000's.
Great movie!
È identica al padre, che meraviglia ❤
Great to see Kiyoshi Kurosawa's masterpiece added to the bag.
Rebecca and To Be Or Not To Be are picks you don’t usually see but awesome when they do
Seeing her walking down the aisle at a film festival in San Francisco years ago was perhaps the most goose bumpy I've ever been while in the presence of an actor.
3:09 her message here is lovely❤
Damn been watching movies my whole life and these videos for quite some time..... this is the first one where I haven't seen the majority of the titles mentioned. So... thanks Chiara. I've got work to do❤
Hmm, what a LIFE she had and is living! Having two of the biggest film stars in the world as parents, but she is so quiet and thoughtful, who expresses knowing about loneliness growing up, there is a lot going on. Love all the classic Hollywood pics! I have a new perspective on 'Love, Italian Style' that makes me want to see it again! Do we mind hearing her talk 'too much' about her dad? Nooo!! LOL!! Does it mean anything that I have a cat named Chiara? Who's to say.
This is actually very insightful. One of my faves
“how do you say… patriarchy?” is sending meee 😂
"Of course you're French, you talk about strike" hahaha.
Nell'ultimo mese ho visto Il bell'Antonio, Adua e le sue compagne, La donna della domenica con un Marcello Mastroianni incredibilmente moderno, elegante e carismatico come è sempre stato del resto...
Great taste. Bravo
Imagine that your father is Marcello Mastroianni and your mother is Catherine Deneuve. I mean, COME ON! (in gob's voice)
Gobias Industries as in "Go buy us all the movies in the Criterion Collection because there is no money in our banana stand!"
She's the spitting image of her father.
yep, exactly like Isabella Rossellini and Ingrid. Typical one-parent dominance.
Wow, what enthusiasm for life and art. It is interesting when she mentions seeing films not made for children as a child probably was a bad idea for most people seemed to be just the right thing for her.
Great picks! She's looks very much like her dad!
What great picks.
👍🏼
What a beautiful woman.😁
a genuine masterclass by Chiara
Great choices, she is the striking image of her father.
You forgot another big reason why one should watch "Divorce Italian Style": your dad is in it! (And he's brilliant) 😂
She's super funny! Very charming, indeed.
I love Chiara, when you look at her, you can see both Marcello and Catherine in her... And fantastic picks by the way!
I saw only Marcello. No sign of Catherine whatsoever, except for the voice maybe.
@trnygbl23 I can see a bit of Catherine in her, perhaps in her voice... Genes are quite something don't they?
I see only Marcello. And believe me, I have no problem summoning up an image of Catherine Deneuve in my head at any given time. Chiara's film picks were outstanding. 👍
"Back to basic" hahahaha love it
A wonderful list. So many I don't know and now will try. Chiara seems to be someone I'd hang out with. In another life, maybe...
She sounds like her mom and looks like her dad
6:33 wonderful list of movies.
My new favorite "Closet Picks" installment!
She's funny and eloquent. Riveting!
“Oh I’m sorry”
*Chucks into the tote*
Id watch her talking about her parents for 10 hours.
Cinema royalty
I love that she loves all my favorite movies ❤
Cure from 1997!! Good choice. That is a fantastic movie.
Wow. She is delightful! Thank you for your insight!
Great video bro
Holy shit! She has her father's eyes big time. Bellisima!
"When I was with child" is such a cool turn of phrase
If you saw her on the street you’d say “There’s Marcello Mastroianni’s daughter!”
That's a fact! 😅
Great movies all of them !
i hope to see "persepolis" in the criterion collection. i love that movie. she's great in that film. her parents are awesome.
CURE FINALLY SOMEONE PICKS IT
She's SO charismatic !!
This is why I come to this channel. And there have been other great guests. They say modern american hollywood is dying. It is. BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE THIS don't populate the executives at most american entertainment corporations, studios art colleges or executive boards.
How much she looks like her Dad. I'd hope she'd take that as a compliment.
Fascino notevole
Nice list - Chiara played the lead in the magnificent Persepolis, one of the best films of the 00s - my favorite film of her father's is Allonsanfan, from the Tavianis - I still need to see him in Henry IV, but Pirandello seems like a great vehicle for those qualities Chiara is describing here
The Organizer is such a good movie.
Great taste
That was awesome.
Loved her in Bastards.
She’s so gorgeous, spirited, and fun! It’s a sign!
A Special Day is def a movie for today!
Very cool guest. Love to hear her talking about movies
Mean Streets awesome!
Great choices! A SPECIAL DAY is a heartbreaker!
Let’s go to the movies!
She looks like a female version of Marcello. Wow!
The most fabulous woman on earth.
I really enjoyed her and this video. Wonderful personality.
What if Criterion updates Divorce Italian Style to Blu-ray. Just an idea.
Excellent 😊
Looks just like her father
I love that she did a rando.
I love her....the dentist line...funny clever woman
Hitchcock! Ernst Lubitsch was amazing!
CHIARAAAAA, I love her!! ❤❤
Chiara M, to me, remains at near the very top of my very short list of nepos I champion.
OOOH i didn’t even need to read the title and i KNEW EXACTLY who her daddy was! They have the same face!
The glasses! 🤓😆 That's what gives it away. Absolutely iconic eyewear
What, no love for Moms? Seriously though Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve were probably the biggest film icons ever to procreate. Like the kids used to say; "Name a bigger duo. I'll wait."
the only other that comes to mind is Ingrid Bergman-Roberto Rossellini but of course the maestro was more impactful behind rather than in front of the screen.
Christophe Honore/ Mother 2000s was a stand out of his with Huppert Louis Carrel. He never seems to get mentioned in reviews
Chiara gentile come Marcello
Mastroiani my favorite surname
