    hello .. a question, what configuration do you put in the gfx 50 to be able to use a manual lens?

    Hi Dylan- How have you liked the Nikon 20mm f1.8G lens with the Steelsring on the GFX 50R? How is vignetting, sharpness, color, etc?
    The adaptor arrives in a few days, deciding whether to get the Nikon 20m f/1.8G, or the Fuji 23mm or 30mm. Any advice / thoughts much appreciated!!!

    I got the adapter and I tried it with multiple Nikon wide and telephoto G and E lenses. I tried multiple focus modes (single, zone, wide). I noticed that the lenses don’t focus very often so I have to touch the focus area multiple times retrying to get it in focus. I get the red (out of focus) squares when I try to focus very often instead of the green (in focus) squares. Did you notice this issue with the adapter which you have or it’s only me facing this issue? I don’t know if got a defective adapter or all of the adapters behave this way.

    hello Dylan. Thanks for your review. I have ordered this adapter and waiting for it until mid November. Let me ask you some questions: 1) Did you download the firmware update=? what did it change?; 2) How one is supposed to close the aperture with a tilt&shift lenses?. I bought it because I shoot basically with tilt&shift Nikon lenses; 3). How it does perform with Type D lenses?. Does the aperture communicate with the body and it shows it as far as one closes down the aperture by rotating the lens ring?. And, if I do not misunderstood your report, autofocus would not work with type D lenses, is that correct?. Thank you very much.

      Hi Jose,
      All of these questions are actually answered on the steelsring site.
      1. Sigma lens compatibility.
      2. Set the ring to a mode.
      3. Manual focus.
      Good luck!

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far the few mentioned here, Frank. The 58mm does a good job with a fairly deep vignette. The 85mm f/1.4 fairs about the same with slightly less vignetting. The 20mm f/1.8 almost covers the whole frame. I'll be trying to get my hands on a couple more lenses, but I wanted to start with my favs from the Nikkor lineup.

    Good video, nice job of explaining it all. Can you please give me the links to buy the extension rings that fit the Nikon lenses, the one that will auto focus your Nikon lenses and the cheaper one that doesn't do auto focus?

    • @paulwais9219
      @paulwais9219 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the steelsring is on ebay right now, also amazon at a similar price: www.ebay.com/itm/223776520056
      I think an easy way to check if your nikon lens will work with it is to take off the rear cap and see if your lens has a physical motor screw hole. If it does, then you won't get autofocus thru the Steelsring. I imagine it'll still mount just fine, just no autofocus.
      for a cheaper manual focus adapter there's the fotodiox one: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1322135-REG/fotodiox_nikg_gfx_pro_pro_lens_mount_adapter.html On the GFX there's a manual focus assist where you can press the thumb wheel and zoom into the subject. It's difficult to use hand-held but is really helpful since with the electronic viewfinder it's almost impossible to verify manual focus when viewing the "raw" full-frame image.

      Wide angle lenses tend to struggle on larger sensors than they were designed for. You can take a look at this extensive list to see how similar lenses perform. I don't believe the Nikkor is on there. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1uxvvpxJ9QVFFyh0pW2rs9KBmUW9vlh-d-VnbcLDCTn8/htmlview?fbclid=IwAR1_4GzKJ0Z7wa3sqw-tZDuuVBG3KJZGkmCl6ctqmr2sXiW67K_GLIU9IHU#gid=0

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As mentioned in the video, some do, some don't. It depends on the image circle. There's a great crowd-sourced google doc out there where people share their results with various lenses adapted to the larger sensor. You should be able to find that with a quick Google search.

    Great review - it does seem that Canon EF lenses are a bit easier to adapt than Nikon.
    Foe me I have some hard to let go Sigma Art lenses that I would like to use on a GFX 100Sii
    But not sure if this adaptor is the best solution - sounds like bud quality is a bit average and overall performance somewhat limited on the lates GFX 100 bodies.

    I love my Tamron 28-75/2.8 with a focus motor. I wonder if this will work.
    I'm a low-budget Nikon user but my D80 shutter is busted and costs as much as a 2nd hand body to repair.
    So I'm thinking of switching to Fuji or Sony. Fuji has a lower barrier to entry than Sony. I'm looking at the Fuji X-S10 with the 16-80/4.
    I would stick to Nikon if the Z50 wasn't so disappointing. No log and the screen flips downward. Upward would have been ok even if it wasn't fully articulating. Downward, it gets blocked by a tripod or gimbal.

    Dan, thanks for your very objective review. I have the gfx 50r and recently picked up the two z bodies z7 and z6. I just have to have that 58mm f1.4g lens. I read your review of the lens and our “taste” are in alignment. So long term what are your thoughts on the adapter with the 58 and 85g lenses with adapter on the Fuji. I want both of those lenses for my Nikon set up and want to utilize them on the GfX as well The look or character of both those lenses is what I’m after . Does it cross over well to the gfx ? And bottom line after having it I presume for while, is the autofocus reasonably reliable. I’m not an autofocus snob. I shot mostly manual focus lenses but autofocus to me is a necessary evil lol …I do need it for some of my work. I just need it to be reasonably ok.

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dylan, but I know a good Dan, so I'll take it! haha.
      In all honesty, I was disappointed with their performance on the larger sensor. I'd certainly pick them up again in a heartbeat if I owned a Nikon body now, but for me they just didn't feel right on the Fujifilm bodies.
      I'm not sure how much help an opinion like this is. It might be worth getting a cheap adapter first and seeing if you like the character before laying out the investment for the Steelsring.

    Howdy Dan. I'm new to your postings and have really benefited from them. I'm also new to GFX offerings. been using Nikon for many years, but back in the analog days (1977 ish) I had a fond memory for Fuji. I was always amazed at the image quality that Fuji produced and decided to jump on the gfx 50s ii. As a result, the adapter was of great interest. I haven't had a Nikkor that I own that hasn't worked as noted in your evaluation. AF is not bad and living with the aperture setting not revealing the stop downs is acceptable. your observation of lens registration was also very interesting. Regarding that, I'm curious about how it works when swapping out the lenses between multiple registration entries. Would you have any insight on that subject? Either way, thanks for well done and candid reviews. I'm going to enjoy following your offerings. - kjg

      @@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Thanks for your response and sorry for this late response. I was referring to the registration of an adopted lens within the 50s ii . I may find the answer by shooting a few photos with each of the registered lenses and checking if the registration data follows each lens as meta data without any manual intervention. Probably a stupid question.
