This note is from a year ago: Nikon is bringing stepping motors to its DSLR lens lineup for the first time with a pair of 'AF-P' lenses, both of which are collapsable 18-55mm zooms (one with vibration reduction, the other without). Nikon says that its stepping motor lenses are both faster and quieter than their predecessors, making them quite appealing for video recording. These lenses have two aspherical elements as well as a Super Integrated Coating, with the VR model reducing shake by 4 stops (using the CIPA standard). These aren't the company's first lenses to use this type of AF motor - they can be found on most, if not all, of the lenses for the Nikon 1 system

Adrian, that’s a good all around lens with a 140mm zoom. The 3.5 -5.6 is your open aperture range. 3.5 at 18mm on the lens and 5.6 at 140mm on the lens. The rest refers to lens version and that it has Vibration Reduction (VR). If you’re trying to do macro photography, youre probably too close to your object for your lens to get a proper focus. Try stepping back a bit and zooming in to see if that helps. Another thing is that your focusing mirror may be a bit out of alignment (my D3500 was like this) causing either forward or backward focus. If this is the case, there is an easy fix for this, but be patient as it can take a bit of time to dial it in. Just be sure to follow the instructions perfectly. I found my camera was front focusing and after finding this and following the instructions, I was able to dial my camera in nicely. Just brought this model, didn’t want to look and the hour tutorials and thought this gave a very good brief overview of the camera. Time to start putting this into practice.👍🏻
My advice for those just starting out is to get FX lenses for your DX camera(such as D5300) as FX lenses will work just fine on DX cameras, but will provide insurance for future body upgrades. DX(APS-C/crop sensor), FX(full frame). I'm saying this because DX lenses don't work well on FX DSLRs as FX DSLR will enter crop mode(DX mode) and it will be like you're using a DX camera. This is a better investment as when you decide to upgrade to an FX camera, your DX lenses will be a burden. I have this exact DSLR and am facing this problem. Furthermore, a kit lens(18-55mm) is fine if you're on a tight budget, but it's best to get a body only and instead of getting kit lens, to get something like a 24-70mm lens. It is pricy(around $600 used for Nikon version), but there are 3rd party alternatives available for less than $400(like Tamron and Sigma). Once you improve in photography, get more lenses based on what you want to shoot.
Hi I got an exact same D5300 with the same Lens. Its been a while and now looking to upgrade a new Lens, thinking of getting: - Nikkor AF-S Lens 24-120mm F4G ED VR - Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens Where I like to shoot more Landscape and some Potraits, with some depth of the background. Which would you recommend or is there any other lens you would recommend for a beginner stepping to intermediate?
Thank you for this video! I was on the fence for this camera and one other due to their price point right now, and I think this will be more useful for me as my first DSLR.
Sir your video was great! Going to buy this camera with kit lens for now! And will invest in lenses later! Coming to the video you have an really amazing review and cleared my doubts! Thank you so much!
Yes, you need "Capture NX-D" which is a program that you can download on the Nikon web page for free. Where else, than on a computer, would one want to edit raw files?
Most of my photos just keep coming out dark if using shutter speed or manual,, i also cannot change the iso sensitivity - it's restricted most of my options
I started out with a D5000 years ago. Great series to learn with. Some if my best pictures were taken with it. Great value for money and a good place to start. I do love my xt2 now though haha
I'm confused. I have this camera, but my kit lens doesn't give me as much of a blurry background effect as this one and I can't take selfies because I appear really close to the camera.. Is mine broken?
How much experience do you have with the lens? It could be a case of checking the minimum focus distance at the different focal lengths and for the blurry background, shooting at the widest aperture. So put it into aperture priority and set it to f3.5 at the widest, then go as close as it will focus on an object and play around until you see the difference. same at the longer end, which is better for that but the aperture on the kit lens isn't so great by the time you zoom in. But try it :) Sorry if i've told you stuff you already know too!
Hi! I'm new to DSLR cameras, been taking a lot of photos with phone only and I'm looking to buy a cheap "beginner"-camera for vacation and weekends etc. I've been looking at Nikon D3400. Would you recommend this over the D3400? In Norway, they are about the same price as used.
Thanks my friend this was a big help, built in mic 🎤 is definitely what I was looking for in the price range and the swivel screen is definitely a bonus I think I’ve found the one I wanted 👍🏽
For photos yes...however if you want to do any video.. I'd stay away I have this camera. I'm watching this hoping I can find a setting to make the focus motor quiet down. Long story short that motor is way to loud you will hear it in every video
@@vinnyavalanche they come with the new AF-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens, which reduce the sound of that motor. Also in my opinion it's a worth buying in 2020, especially for photography. I just got mine couple of months ago.

Great question. Indoors sport would be more demanding and you might need to find a good 70-200 2.8 if possible. If light isn't an issue Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G could be good, or if the venue is small an 85mm maybe

I just ordered my D5300 with a VR II lens, I have not owned a DSLR of my own before. I want to focus mostly on portrait photography (from my daily life) and I have noticed a significant difference in photos with the 50 mm lens. I would like to purchase it right away, but what lens do you think is better for this purpose? (without going out of budget)
Best review i have seen so far about this camera, im looking into buying my first DSLR and im currently trying to weigh up if i want to buy this Nikon D5300, a D3300 or a Canon 700D - i cant really split them so if you could chip in with your suggestion i would much appreicate it.
Both would serve you well but invest in faster lenses, 1.8 or 1.4 lenses when you can. Even a 2.8 zoom to upgrade from the kit lens. But both would give you enough potential to get to grips with the system and potential without spending too much.
Hi, I am considering between a D3400 and D5300. I will only use it to shoot indoor (99%) for properties which are usually in low light condition. I will also purchase a ultra wide angle for this camera. I read somewhere I believe on Quora where somebody said it is better to get a D5300 as it has more AF. However the ISO on the D5300 is lower than on D3400. Which is more important for my use? Higher ISO or AF? Thanks
Hi mate, just recently got this camera as my first camera. I’ve realised that when I change my ISO, Aperture or Shutter speed, it doesn’t actually change anything on the screen which is a bit annoying for me. Is there any sort of settings you know of which changes this, or is the camera just not able to do that? 😆
@@DamianBrown thank you for the reply! I meant that when changing the iso etc it wouldn’t get lighter or darker until I took the shot, I managed to fix it by going into movie mode but in movie mode you can’t go below 1/40 shutter speed, but I think that is fine for now :) thanks again for the reply
@@qu1n357 heyyy there I am semi professional shooter here the thing with mirrored cameras majority of it don’t offer the live view of changing iso aperature or shutter, if you want to actually see it change try mirrorless camera such as the z5 or anything above.
Lepewhi - Newer, so what. Both have articulating screens. Canon's a 100 bucks more. Not sure if the higher price is worth it. Last time I spoke to their customer service Canon's CS was superior back in 2015.
Thank you for the clear, beginner friendly explanation in this video. I got a question about the D5300. I have access to one currently (worded like this because its not mine) with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR kit lens and I find the photos I get a bit too dim and I find that I have to increase the ISO to 3200 and beyond, especially since I tend to take photos around the late afternoon-sunset part of the day. I'm looking into getting a faster lens for it but everything is pretty much out of my price range, the closest option would be to use a vintage manual lens like the Minolta MD Rokkor 50mm f/1.7 from my father. Searching on how to adapt it led me to checking out lens adapters that have the glass for infinity focus that can convert the SR mount of the Minolta lens to the D5300, but I'm kind of concerned if I should go for the adapter or just save up for a fast native Nikon F mount lens.
I love adapting vintage lenses although I haven't done it with this camera. I'd definitely try the adapter if it's cheap because if it goes well there's a whole world of cheaper glass out there that you could enjoy. Naturally if you have the budget for a fast native lens then sure. But there's definitely a lot of fun in those old lenses.
Nice video, I want to buy this DSLR but I am confused for lense which lense is proper for D5300 for indoor as well as outdoor shoot, because I am beginner...
@@irfanridzky1422 so, you can set the camera to take e.g. 250 pics at x seconds interval and after you must combine these pics with some software to produce a video? The D5600 makes all this automatically? I 'm asking cause i 'm thinking to buy the d5300 (double lenses kit) for 500€ instead of the d5600 for 799€ (with 18-140 lens).
Make sure that your lenses have built in motor for autofocus(designated as AF-I, AF-S or AF-P), as regular AF lenses don't have it built in. This means that AF won't work on D5300 as the body doesn't have a built in motor to drive the AF lens AF screw. Furthermore, this means that only manual focus will work.
I had a quick question: I bought the Nikon D5300, I thought that if you placed the camera on automatic that the camera itself would be going in and out to focus, it seems that I still need to use the fine focus nob on the lens to fine focus. Am I put it on the wrong setting? Or expect the camera to.focus for me on automatic? Thx.
Very informative video. I need an advice. I am planning to buy d5300 with 18-55 kitt and a Yongnuo 50 f1.8. However, I was thinking to save some money and go for d3300/d3500. Or spend all and get a d5600 instead. My primary concern is image quality. Should I go with d5300, d5600 or d3300/d3500? This would be my first DSLR and my budget allows for d5600 at the most. Thanks in advance.
If you're new to photography, you don't need an expensive camera that you won't even know how to really use. Lenses matter far more than the body too. Save yourself some money, get a d3300 or d3200 and spend what you saved on a good macro, telephoto or 50/35mm prime lens depending on your need.
@@LordsSky Though I am new to Photography, I have learnt a lot through TH-cam. I will be shooting in Manual or Aperture priority mostly, that's why I want a mid range camera. Secondly, I want to buy a decent body in start so that I won't have to upgrade again soon. I am confused between d5500 and d5600 only because of touchscreen. Tell me, does having a touchscreen helps in maintaining right focus in video in d5600 by using touch-to-focus throughout video recording? Is it really an advantage? Thanks for replying 😊
@@ahsanalishaikh2004 I can't say about the touchscreen, I'd never use it to focus myself as I never use the live screen in cameras. I don't shoot film, and for photography its just too slow.

Enjoy!
Do I buy a D3400 or D5300 ?? I want the camera for portrait shoots and flatlays. I want a good dslr without spending a lot of money.
If you're not going to use it too heavily then you might be better getting the cheaper one and investing in faster lenses :)
Thanks Damian for the review. I just bought one to replace my dead D90
Enjoy!!!
Thanks Mario!
Best explanation bro
Thanks :)
Hello sir great description thanks for your video I own this camera
My question is can we shoot video in night
Hi I got an exact same D5300 with the same Lens. Its been a while and now looking to upgrade a new Lens, thinking of getting:
- Nikkor AF-S Lens 24-120mm F4G ED VR
- Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens
Where I like to shoot more Landscape and some Potraits, with some depth of the background. Which would you recommend or is there any other lens you would recommend for a beginner stepping to intermediate?
I'd go 18-200, seems overall better apart from the F4...
@@DamianBrown Thank you so much for the prompt reply
Does the Nikon strap/ a bag come with the 18-55 mm lens? Or do we purchase those separately?
I usually see a strap with the body but the bag, I guess depends where you purchase from
Damian Brown okay; thank you! I found your video to be extremely professional and helpful and I’m looking forward to buy D5300 myself. Thank you!
Amit Bachani Yes it comes with that
Melfred Fernandes thank you. I recently purchased a D5300 as my first DSLR and found that it does come with the strap.
Thank you for this video! I was on the fence for this camera and one other due to their price point right now, and I think this will be more useful for me as my first DSLR.
It's a quality bit of kit!
Hi Damian
Excellent video mate, I've just bought this camera with a 35mm lens, being new to photograph i found this video really helpful, Thank you 😉
I just got this camera and this was very helpful and motivational, thank you!
Thank you very much! Enjoy the camera :)
me too - paid 100USD second hand with Kit lens + 16gb SD......but I have 20 DSLRs already for fun ^-)
Sir your video was great! Going to buy this camera with kit lens for now! And will invest in lenses later! Coming to the video you have an really amazing review and cleared my doubts! Thank you so much!
Very kind, thank you! I hope you enjoy the camera :)
Damian Brown Yes sir! Thank you
I ordered a Nikon D5300 with E Infinity never really heard of them before but so far they seem to be legit and only cost me £335 brand new. 👍
How is the camera
NEF (RAW) can only be used with a computer software for editibg the photo is that correct?
Yes, you need "Capture NX-D" which is a program that you can download on the Nikon web page for free.
Where else, than on a computer, would one want to edit raw files?
I'm trying to get into photography and I seen there's different lenses and stuff online, do you have to buy one of those or does it come with a lense?
spaghettisauce one comes with it
Linda A thank you
What would you consider a good wide angle and a good macro lens for the 5300?
Maybe the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G for macro and the Tokina 11-16
Very nice. Am planning to buy Nikon D 5300 shortly
If you r more into photography go with the d5300, if you are in videography go with the canon sL2(200d) cuz it has better autofocus
@@abdelmoumen6233 ok
Is this one still worth buying second hand for a beginner in concert photography? Thanks!
I think pretty much yes
With fast lenses yes!
But try it :)
Sorry if i've told you stuff you already know too!
Hi!
I'm new to DSLR cameras, been taking a lot of photos with phone only and I'm looking to buy a cheap "beginner"-camera for vacation and weekends etc. I've been looking at Nikon D3400. Would you recommend this over the D3400? In Norway, they are about the same price as used.
I would yes
Thanks my friend this was a big help, built in mic 🎤 is definitely what I was looking for in the price range and the swivel screen is definitely a bonus I think I’ve found the one I wanted 👍🏽
Brilliant!
Which camera 200-350 range has high quality pictures for Instagram and out door photography? i’m starting my business and want high quality pictures
Is it still worth in the end of 2019? I think about this Nikon or Sony A6 or A7, what do you think?
For photos yes...however if you want to do any video.. I'd stay away I have this camera. I'm watching this hoping I can find a setting to make the focus motor quiet down. Long story short that motor is way to loud you will hear it in every video
@@vinnyavalanche they come with the new AF-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens, which reduce the sound of that motor. Also in my opinion it's a worth buying in 2020, especially for photography. I just got mine couple of months ago.
Hi I myself have this camera if ur just starting photography it is perfect. It is easy to use easy to set the settings in manual. I love this camera it is my baby.
Sony A7 is a better option. I have a D5300 and the auto focusing is still very good. I use mine for wedding photography. Nothing wrong
@@dby6470 Same!! I purchased mine last year and the photo quality is supurb. Can't tell the difference between this and those stupidly overpriced cameras.
Thank you I just bought my kit today and bought a SIGMA lens - 105mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO OS for abstract photography for my art.
You are super easy to listen too. Great quick video.
Wow, very kind!
Hey damian is this camera still good for a beginner to start photographing sports events ? And what zoom should i get
Thanks in advance
Great question. Indoors sport would be more demanding and you might need to find a good 70-200 2.8 if possible. If light isn't an issue Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G could be good, or if the venue is small an 85mm maybe
Can Nikon D5300 have a Timelapse function??
interested in this camera for exactly the reasons you mentioned at the start of the video. Your film really helped, thank you! Best wishes.
Thank you!
best that canon 200d camera ..pls reply
Hello thanks for the info Hows battery life there was a mention of something bypassed in either this or its predicessor ? having to do with pictur quality
I've got an old Pentax *ist DL2 (actually rebranded as a Samsung GX-1L) that's only 6 MP. Had it for 10 years. I shoot birds so I like to crop. Need mor e MPs, video, shake reduction and self cleaning sensor (none of which my Samsung has). this looks great. Can get a kit with 18-55vr, 55-300vr bag and SD card for $800 US (£610)
Nice!
Would $300 be a good deal for a used Nikon D5300 with AF-S Nikkor 18-55 mm lens today?
Yes :D
Great video im a complete beginner with this camera, fun video and made so simple thank you 🎥😁
Thanks Tim, good surname too!
Best review i have seen so far about this camera, im looking into buying my first DSLR and im currently trying to weigh up if i want to buy this Nikon D5300, a D3300 or a Canon 700D - i cant really split them so if you could chip in with your suggestion i would much appreicate it.
I think I replied on Facebook :) If not let me know... travelling at the moment so my brain is frazzled :) But I'm sure it was the same question :)
What is the best nikon d5300 or canon 1300d??
Hello Damian. What about a Sony alfa a35? Is it worth for the year 2022?
Should be good for a while yes!
would u recommend this or d3400 for a beginner that uses iphone7 to take photos? I am looking for faster shutter speed and higher resolution...
Both would serve you well but invest in faster lenses, 1.8 or 1.4 lenses when you can. Even a 2.8 zoom to upgrade from the kit lens. But both would give you enough potential to get to grips with the system and potential without spending too much.
Ng Zi Hao the D5300 will probably be the same price and offer more for your dollar compared to the 3400.
I'm happy for this clear review now I'm got to give a try
Enjoy!
Hi,
I am considering between a D3400 and D5300.
Thanks
D5300 obviously, you will not use the highest ISO believe me. And more AF is obviously better

What type of camera did you use for this video
Very late reply but Canon 80D.
That’s a great video! Thank you. sealed the deal for me I’ll get one.
Hope you enjoy yours!
What can you see on the screen? Maybe you can change the display by pressing (if I recall correctly) the i button?
@@DamianBrown thank you for the reply! I meant that when changing the iso etc it wouldn’t get lighter or darker until I took the shot, I managed to fix it by going into movie mode but in movie mode you can’t go below 1/40 shutter speed, but I think that is fine for now :) thanks again for the reply
@@qu1n357 heyyy there I am semi professional shooter here the thing with mirrored cameras majority of it don’t offer the live view of changing iso aperature or shutter, if you want to actually see it change try mirrorless camera such as the z5 or anything above.

Yes got wifi
Am from India with my d5300. Actually my auto focus illuminator is not working kindly help
most users switch it off in the Menu/ me too > OFF. But you can activate it - by Menue settings. Unless that LED is dead .....
Sri nilon d 5300 or canon 200d who is better for travelling
I think the Canon is smaller, if that matters. Plus it's newer and with very fast focusing. I'd get the Canon.
I have a question if u can help me...for how long I can use d5300 for timelapse?
This camera has interval timer shooting menu inside, you can adjust up to 3 digits (number of shoots) at any interval.
What you'll recommend for photography and Videography. D5300 or Canon T6i? I need great auto focus as well.
Hmm... i'm a fan of the nikon for Photography and the Canon for video work... overall at least
Damian Brown That's mean I have to buy both? (Nikon and Canon) 😂
Hey, I'm a bit confused. My camera won't let me change some things like Iso sensitivity and white balance. Any idea?
Hi I wanted to take a video interview does it automatically focus videos on the object or I need to keep pressing af-f button
It has a bad autofocus on video mode, the Canon sL2(200d) is much better
I am hoping to get a d5300 but will the lenses i use on my D40 still work? lens i have are over 10 yrs old
Very possibly yes.
Thanks Damian! excellent review. Just bought one for £350.
Bargain!
hello, Please does nikon d5300 has clean output for hdmi live streaming?
From what I can tell yes, try pressing Information button a few times.
Thx.
Ed Jimenez this camera is known for having bad autofocus on video, I would suggest using manual in video
What's the difference between this D5300 and the D3400?
Size and relative capability is the quickest answer.
How many is it today?
I know that God answers prayers my desire is to have this camera one of the best
Did you get your wish?
Can it be recharged via USB cable charger like cellphone?
Ayaz Ali Laghari no
I try to use as a openboxing video camera for my TH-cam channel but not works well, the noise of the servo focus actuator has recorded in my video.
I'd try an external mic. You can get a cheap lav mic for £14 uk
