- This is our in-depth review of the VW ID Buzz LWB. We're taking a look at Exterior, Interior and the driving experience. The VW ID Buzz LWB (long wheel base) marks the return of the VW Microbus to the US market. It will also be available worldwide and is 25 cm or 10“ longer than the short wheel base version. It features 6 or 7 seats and is thus also one of the rare 7-seater EVs on the market. The interior is vegan / animal-free and made of recyclables.

I like it, but dont love it.
The interior is fine, not super special, but sensible and nothing irksome...the body looks better in this full length, however im not convinced by the front fascia. I am the target market since i identify as a hippie American (lol) however if the round headlights are still good enough for Porsche, they should have made a return here as well. they were 100% part of the charm of the original. if the original never existed the fascia would be fine(-ish since the bumper is meh as well), but it just doesnt fully recapture the magic of the original. Perhaps someone can make a new fascia kit to finish it off properly since the vehicle is otherwise a very credible entry in the segment (historical baggage aside)...i will still be rooting for VW to continue evolving the niche they popularized and for future models to improve on this first effort. One could argue that perhaps VW is too big and committee based to make a good retro vehicle...The beetle redo was a disappointment as well because it was so obviously FWD (even if this one is a much more faithful reboot).
for reference I gave the Beetle a D+ (since the chassis and drivetrain were still competent) where as i would give this a B+ since the face is the only thing that lets this new retro vehicle down. It would get an A or perhaps even an A+ if they got it right on a refresh in the future...Im also looking forward to any factory camper versions to give it a final grade in terms of relative fidelity to the original...
Side note:
Imagine what a cult hit the Beetle reboot could have been if they hadnt cheaped out, and instead had made it rear engined like the original? they would still be sold today...and even though the FIAT 500 was commercially more successful as a reboot, both it and the new beetle would be positively ICONIC entry level sports cars for young petrol heads today (and for all time) and i believe would have sold in sufficient numbers to more than satisfy the accountants that likely would have preemptively aborted any such notions. Its not even that crazy an idea in the modern day market...I mean if the twingo exists its totally doable. Too often manufacturers dont consider the free marketing that is the aftermarket, which would have embraced those chassis' 10x more if they had the dynamic purity of RWD . Its for that reason i would say my greatest criticism of the new electric FIAT 500 is that they didnt make the chassis RWD (like VW has done, to their credit). perhaps a future AWD model will remedy that for FIAT and i hope they fix the face on this vehicle in the next update as well, because i genuinely want to love it.
I like the green with green interior accents the best.
I like the casual dressed Thomas! Seems like the color of the vehicle keeps playing tricks on the camera tint 😂
camera is stoned
@@autogefuehl 😂😂😂
@@lutzaby1997 Or just casually dressed. Every thing else belongs on "Autogefühl, After Dark"
I love the design. Ultra modern, but still faithful to the original. They somehow managed to capture the magic. I'm sure it'll be a success.
Needs circular headlights...will be an aftermarket for that.
Agreed in the outside.
Whoever decided that a mini van should have white cloth seats doesn't know the target demographic of a mini van.
That depends on the cost
You know that Thomas is dedicated. He even bruises himself for a full length video. Thanks again for a brilliant video and nice outfit. Always a pleasure to watch this channel.
highly appreciated !
the things you do to bring us car reviews Thomas, Thank you.
As always, perfect review! Thank you Thomas.
thanks m8 !
I honestly love your reviews. I even watch the ones about cars that I’m not the most interested in. Just as an automobile enthusiast. Your easy calm and detailed manner are very refreshing. I’m sure you’re very pleasant and positive company overall. I also tend to share your thoughts on design. I like the Bahaus / gestalt philosophy and being a lifelong design student, find myself gravitating towards the “less is more”, / delicate function and form waltz myself.
Best wishes.
Highly appreciated my friend!
Just when I thought my German brothers had lost the plot on how to appeal to us Americans, here is a homerun answer.😊👍
In the US, VW was seen as counter-culture in the 60s & 70s.
American cars had boastful names and boastful ads.
VW had names like Bug, Rabbit and "Thing", and the ads were self-deprecating.
This embrace of the pure "box" will be counter to the macho-man 4x4s and the blobby, swoopy CUVs that dominate the US market.
Truly counter-culture, these IMHO will rightly command high prices for setting a new trend.
Beautiful and superbly practical. But I fear the price will be prohibitive.
Thomas taking one for the AF team! Great vid as usual. This bus has a lot of appeal for it's utilitarian approach. I wish other manufacturers put as much thought into their interiors as VW did here. I've been looking for an overlanding vehicle and while this would not work, it would be perfect to camp out in.
👍😎
Hi Thomas & Team, I love your reviews very informative and professional. The ID Buzz looks great and I think it will be a big success especially now VW moving away from all the discrepancies of the past. Hope your knee is better and look forward to your next review.
Keep up the great work Cheers Irish Paul
thanks! I m fine luckily! :)
Hi Thomas and Team, I find your reviews the best! great job!

Nice review and vehicle Thomas, thanks
Waiting for the California version! Ideally I'd like more of a 500-600 km range, but well, 400 isn't that bad. I remember when these were teased a few years ago and VW were saying 800km range!! We all knew that wouldn't happen
Even 400 km is probably a bit steep.
The short version run out of battery after 309 km under normal driving conditions.
800km will happen...but more likely for the next generation.
The other Platform in VW Group at Audi will come with 700km Range in 2024 for the A6 e-tron.
At the Moment we are at 250Wh/kg as the best...Amprius and CATL has already shown the new 500Wh/Kg Cells, which are ready for production...and Theion a Germany Company in Berlin is working on Li Sulfid Batteries with 1000Wh/kg (hopefully already in 2027 in production).
Furthermore there is heavy Investment to make progress in Li Air Batteries, with the goal for 2500Wh/Kg...ten time better...with this a Range of 5000km would be theoretically possible with the weight of 100kwh Batterie of today...but this is indeed future.
BUT...the 500Wh/kg ist already reality and would make the range double in some years...which would be 800km instead of the 400km.
And I wait for the Grand California, finally an all electric EV-RV, no more Gas for heating and cooking and you even get heating flooring for free due to the battery pack cooling system and much more!
@@josefv8708 let's see what and when hits the market, gives me time to save up som money 😁
Finally not boring VW😁
Good job Thomas 👍
They should make the middle row removable too. Easier to add a removable bed then for weekends away ext, but with the option to put the seats back easily when needed.
Thank you for taking the back seats out! Haven't seen another reviewer doing that.
✌️
Risking life and limb to provide us viewers with this fantastic first look at this beautiful machine. Thank you! I hope your knee is recovering well now.
Thanks m8! Gladly i m fine!
dont be boring Thomas i love the bright interior colours, i will love to see the Buzz as a camper van.
I am really looking forward to test driving one in the Atlanta area!
Another great review Thomas! 👍
thanks m8 !
As a parent of a 2 and 5 year old, I'm pleased it has sliding doors , and that you can just open them before getting out of your driver's seat.
I like the flexibility it has to either take on 7 passengers or take my family of 4 with luggage (removing the 3rd row).
This is in my consideration along with the Kia and Hyundai SUVs coming out.
Nice review! Hope you safe Thomas!
Yes i m fine thanks 😊
Awesome Buzz, awesome T-shirt!
So, find your descriptions and your analysis really well done, especially the English words flow, find comes across very well! Also, I think the long buzz seems to be the one people have been waiting for! Still missing the surfboards....
thanks !!
That outfit fits perfect with the vibe of the Buzz..👍
=)
Thomas, you are turning into One of my favorites 👍 I'm glad you are Alright...😄
Thanks 🙏
I am definitely interested! I owned a 1968 VW bus and as you said, this new micro bus appeals emotionally. First ev that really captures my interest, I hope it’ll be a winner in the US! 😊
Love the casual look 😊 the BUZZ is so cute 🥰
So cute and so is the van !😊
How about rear a/c vents and power outlets!. Always great detailed review. Does the sunroof slide and what options VW is offering for kid's. Love it👌🙏🙏🌼🌼
lovely vehicle and review thank you Thomas
As the owner of a vw golf as always beautiful well done VW
Greetings from Normandy, France, I don’t know about the US market but having that van and all blue Thomas blue, of course would be awesome, then again I’m sure that the price is also very awesome. This gentleman convinced me after watching his video to go and buy my brand new Skoda superb 2015. I have less time to watch the channel because I’m busy with my work especially right now in the month of June but usually I try to tune in when I can this made me hopeful thank you great video Thomas.✌🏻🇫🇷✌🏻☮️
Great to hear from you my friend!
Great Report. I look forward to this one showing up here. I wish the Honda Element went down this route and came back to market.
Awesome review, Thomas!
thanks Paul !
Incredible car, absolute dream for the family, glamping and all the windsurf equipment. But the second row being non-removeable is a dealbreaker.
So sad you still can't take out the second seat row. Would make this car so much more versatile (like hauling bicycles without removing wheels etc). Lets hope they add this in the future.
You can absolutely take bicycles by putting the 2nd row all the way forward and removing the 3rd row.
1,55 may be enough for a bicycle but certainly not for sleeping or watersports equipment.
They really outdid themselves. What a shame, the car is otherwise huge. To much useless shit but still huge
@@eriii276 You can fold 2nd row and form a fully flat surface with folded 3rd row and boot shelf.
I would have liked to see this in the video - the 2nd row and third row folded with the shelf to see it as a sleeping platform.
@@JoaoABRodrigues great. I assume the boards or bicycles go on the rooof?
Finally a car that fit a family of 7 like mine instead of thoose worthless "7-seat" SUV:s. Driving a Sharan today and really wan't to update, but there are no spacious alternativs on the european market.
I like your style, Thomas!
Great update for ID Buzz - vents, childseat tilt for 2nd row, isofix in 3rd row as well and opening windows. Finally great big family car. Still - Give it steering wheel from Caddy - more real buttons please :) I am also happy for stronger motor which allows to stay with RWD setup and still have this small turning circle (longer wheelbase makes it bigger but still - AWD versions of ID cars have much bigger turning circles ). Only worried with the price - heat pump, bigger battery, more car, more power....
The Nordic market was really disappointed with the low powered cabin heater in the original European version. Same 6kW as in the smaller ID.4. I hope the new LWB version has fixed that.
I love it! Do the head lamps move side to side during turns? I saw an early video that had a brief shot of that, but I don’t know if that feature made the production model. Thanks!
The return of the minivan! I look forward to future iterations such as a panel van.
A very appealing design with loads of practicality. I'll wait to see the driving test and find out the drive away price. The ID Buzz is likely to appeal to many people across different demographics.
Great Review as usual. That beard really suits you! It makes you look younger! 🎉
I've been looking forward to this one for years. It looks great. I just hope it lives up to the hype, and it's not so overpriced that only the 1% can afford it. I don't care how good it is, I'm not going to mortgage my house to get an EV.
Trunk / boot section was excellent, at least I enjoyed it.
👍
great review thomas! and a 👍 as you dress for the occasion 😀
😎🤟
Thanx for your well made reviews.
I would love to see a deep dive in the new software (also in practical use, when possible), as the old version has been a major factor to not even consider this car up until now.
Thanks for joining!
I love 60s inspired colors and design. 60s was the best decade for design.
The teal color on interior and exterior looks dope
Thomas you are The Best!!!
thanks my friend =)
Love your videos! Suggestion for future videos: measure the width between inner isofix points for backseat. That would be really helpful for families!
Thanks 🙏
Hm does that really differ?
And still touchscreen buttons everywhere 😢
A retrospective that goes forward. I like it. Hoping they can keep this in the $45k - $60k price range, otherwise it will be hard for mass adoption. Great job Thomas!
The shortweel base is already above 60k so I think sadly the price tag will be one good reason to not buy it.
cheers m8 !
Expect the highest spec in europe to be near 100k as in the US the 7 seat, RWD with most equipment is expected to cost 60k plus taxes, so in europe taxes are higher and so around 100k for the AWD full equipment. Not for hippies...
@@ricarmig it goes well over 100k here in europe, i'm really not sure who will buy it for that much money
Ready to purchase today. Hurry up VW!
As long as the Software is solid and not buggy VW will make a big comeback!!!
It"s beautiful!!!
This review made me yearn to buy it!
cant wait to see these in person. hope they sell pretty well in the states.
Thanks for the preview! Looking forward to the ID.California.
We ll keep u updated!
@@autogefuehl 👍🏻
Such a shame it doesn't feature the same benefits as the multi van with facing seats and table but very nice and comprehensively reviewed as per normal high standards
I can’t wait to drive one…driving a classic VW bus stick shift is such a fantastic feeling!!!!
Thanks for the review. I wonder what the range will be with say 4 adults an ice chest and all the beach stuff?
thanks! We ll do a driving review for sure, SWB driving review is here: th-cam.com/video/RP2CgARYit8/w-d-xo.html
I doubt it has the payload/max loading capacity to even do that legally. I know the 5 seats in U.K. only legally carry 474kg and this has 2 extra seats and a bigger body
Thumbs up for that trendy tshirt :)
=)
As always Tomasz, You are The Best. This is the only version of ID Buzz worth to think about as serious T5/1/2/3.1 competitor. Of course lack of swivel seats, round table/ that most of the time I keep the in garage;-) because big car is even bigger in 5seaters ver ;-)
thanks my friend !
awesome. can you actually sleep in the back/trunk if you take the 3rd row out?
Rear seats out - blow up mattrass and sleeping bags in - bikes on the back - and off to Bike Park Wales. Just need to save up the £70k+!
Great review again guys.
Thanks 🙏
Hi Thomas. Can the Front seats swivel around on the new long wheel base model.
Beaauuuuuutiful and spacious car! I cant stop watch the 7seat videos. I have now changed my plans from prospecting the 7seat Mercedes EQB to this one. Just beautiful.
Huge price difference between the two. I would personally get a used EQB for about 40k rather than pay 80k for the Buzz
The fact that you can't open the second row windows is a huge oversight. I have two little kids and they always demand their windows to be opened. Id love this van for my family and that is a dealbreaker for me.
You can open the smaller sliding windows in the sliding doors.
@@hansblafoo ah, interesting. I wonder how the kids would like that.
@@davepaek5014 I've seen it in other TH-cam Videos and it seems to be pretty cool! Okay, obviously, they are a little bit smaller than regular windows, but the option of opening them (electrically, btw) is stunning!
Great presentation Iam from down under of South Australia Adelaide I am looking forward to perches this model when it arrives here
Thanks again from Alessandro Dimasi
thanks, please recommend our channel! :)
I'm curious to know if two full sized tyres can fit under that trunk partition with the third row all the way forward.
Sacrifices were made to the knee. Hope for good recovery. Great coverage.
A bit sad EU regulation does not allow lit up badge in the front.
Thanks m8!
i know i have said this before Thomas but i am waiting for the VW id2 All and or the idLife, as i am in the UK i like small cars.
Looking forward to the Long WB in Sweden pretty soon!
Thanks for you review. It is good as always. I think trhe range of the car is what matters if it's going to sell.
Thanks 🙏 yeah agree
Can't wait until 2024 when this vehicle is released😊🎉 I have always been a fan ❤ old vs new I think they achieved the modern updates but kept true to the original❤
Great to see the sunroof in this version
I love it. I would want one of these, and an electric version of a golf.
This van is so good
My dream vehicle from VW family.
Love the wheels!
are you able to take out the middle row. when used as a van it would be good to have them removable as well. if they can't be removed it may be a hard pass for me.
So no track system like the T6.1? I love being able to turn the middle seats around and have 4 or 5 people facing each other
Love the design! I'm almost 6'4" so I'll need to do a test sit before I even consider it. Also very curious about the price.
Do I see the 2nd row air vents finally?
What I'm wondering is will the shorter Buzz have option for the 6 seat variant or just 7. And motor options besides 204 hp one
The keyfob should have been a disc with the VW logo on one side and the buttons on the other! Great review!
😄👍
Love the shirt, man!
✌️
Yay! Real door handles!
I have to consider this ID Buz 😊
This car will absolutely be a winner!
looks cool ! Good competition to mini vans..
I will definitely be putting in an order when the GTX version is available. I wanted to hear what the smaller cutouts in the rear door windows were. Are they inset windows that can be opened? Kind a weird look, and the only thing that made me think they had made a design mistake on this vehicle.
Yes
Where are you getting these acceleration figures from since they haven't been announced?
Are vw trying to make this the new splitscreen/bay window style bus ? Even though its more of a Sharan mpv style vehicle?
wow what a great car, i like it so much, cant wait for it!!
