Macallan A Night On Earth In Scotland Scotch Malt Whisky Review: Do Not Make The Same Mistake I Did!

  • Happy New Year! Today I review Macallan A Night On Earth In Scotland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2022 release. It seems quite fitting because the inspiration for this special release from Macallan is the celebration of the Scottish tradition of Hogmanay, celebrating the last day of the year and ringing in the new year. This bottle with it's rather impressive(and over the top) packaging is meant to be a gift to present to others on such a night. Aside from the concept and packaging we have what's actually inside this bottle! It is a vatting of first fill ex-bourbon casks with sherry seasoned American and European oak casks. The whisky has no age statement, is natural colour, as all Macallan bottlings are, is bottled at 43% and is likely chill-filtred. Happy New Year, here's to 2023!

    While difficult to discern if one is not versed in polite Canadian dialectics, this was in fact a brutal, no holds barred take down of this whisky.

    Happy New Year Matt!
    I've not bought a Macallan for about 4 years, because the price just doesn't reflect what's in the bottle. So much more better value whisky out there to discover. I opened a Kilkerran 12 (first time tasting it) on NYE. Such a nice well balanced dram.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy New Year D L! Yeah, you are not finding good value in the Macallan range these days. Kilkerran 12 is a whisky that only got better as I worked my way down the bottle. I adore it, one of my favourites.

    Happy New Year! I was curious by this one but I sure am glad I didn't pull the trigger on it.

    Great review I agree 100%. My recommendation for my friends is Tamdhu 15 love it cheers

      Thanks! Tamdhu is a fantastic replacement for a bottle of Macallan, both in style and substance. The Tamdhu 15 is the sweet spot in their range for my experience. Cheers 🥃

    Получил данный напиток в качестве презента от поставщика оборудования просле успешной интеграции оборудования на объекте, я не знал сколько этот продукт стоит, но как минимум раз в 10 дороже, чем обычные алкогольные напитки которые мы употребляем последнее время. Открыл бутылку в компании друзей, я был приятно удивлен самостоятельностью аромата и в то же время его готовностью стать компаньоном к фруктам. Очень стоящий напиток, после него я понял что есть очень достойные представители дорогого алкоголя, просто нужно дегустировать. Макалан - ТОП!🎉

    I've avoided Macallan due to 'in my opinion' inflated prices. But still an intriguing review. 🥂

      Thanks for the comment! I have largely avoided them for the same reason. Trade too much on their name. You are wise to avoid!

  • @DayKlight

    avoided Macallan, just despise the cost policy for often 43% and chill filtered. For the same price you can get such great drams.

      You're exactly right to do so, your reasoning is sound. Cheers.

    Nice hat. Classy just like your review. What’s your opinion of the 2003 2004 Macallan scandal regarding fake bottles of whiskey?

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว

      The hat is a 10/10. Macallan, not so much. It's just kinda funny that Macallan got duped with those fake bottles.

    My most recent experience with Macallan was underwhelming. I ordered the standard Macallan 12-year at a bar. This is the one most likely to be encountered in restaurants and bars and serves as their entry level product. With this one being the usual introduction to their line, I would expect it to be better than it is, especially considering that Macallan has positioned itself as a luxury brand. On the nose, it is wonderful, but after sniffing it, I expect a complex flavor bomb on the palate, but it comes across as thin and watery. Maybe it is better to snort the stuff than to drink it. I would recommend it to beginners who aren't accustomed to the hard core stuff, but experienced whisky drinkers have certainly found out that better whisky can be had for less money. I remember it being better years ago. Maybe it really was, or maybe I wasn't as experienced back then. A non chill filtered version bottled at anywhere from 46% to cask strength, if such a thing exists, would possibly allow it to reach its full potential. However, I'm reluctant to pay inflated prices for Macallan given that the entry level product is underwhelming, so for any Macallan whisky, my rule will be to try before I buy. Unfortunately, even tasting at a bar can be expensive because practically everything aside from the entry level 12-year is overpriced. I'm not about to pay US$450 for a 2-ounce pour of the 25-year (I saw this recently). I'm not a cheapskate, but I have my limits. I don't see any Macallan finding its way into my collection unless I am fortunate enough to find an independent bottling.
    My new year's gathering happened a week late because a family member was sick. After the Champagne, I had a small glass of Pacific Coast Spirits 5 year 10 month cask strength triticale bourbon. Unlike Macallan, it is non chill filtered. It is great on the nose, but also unlike Macallan, it fully delivers on the palate. Being a craft product from a tiny distillery, it is rather expensive, but I would rather spend my money on something like this. Since it is a potent whisky, a little goes a long way, so I'll be able to keep the bottle going for a while, and then when it is gone, I'll go to the distillery in search of a replacement from among their current offerings.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent plan, you snort it then report back to us your findings!🤣 Sadly, as you mentioned, the nose is about as good as it gets, downhill from there with OB Macallan.
      Gordon and Macphail Speymalt (Macallan) can be had for a really reasonable price, and at cask strength, non chill filtered, natural colour.
      Glad you had something unique, robust, and with integrity to crack on New Years! Happy New Year Heather!

    Best Macallan I bought the last couple years was an IB 12 year at 47% for $72.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว

      Was that the Montrose and Sons bottling from Total Wine? Hell of a deal for $72! How is it?

      @@whiskyonthewestcoast yes it was. Very good stuff and different from typical Macallan. It was either aged in Ex-Bourbon or refill Sherry. Not much Sherry influence but interesting to see what the Macallan distillate taste like. Honey, floral and a bit nutty.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว

      Another reason why IB's are so valuable, bringing a different presentation to something familiar with say, an ex-bourbon or refill cask.

      Probably a wise thing not to have. I don't imagine I will buy many official bottlings in the future. I have one other bottle and that's it.

  • @lewisduffy675
    @lewisduffy675 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I could have told you that before you wasted your hard-earned money bud. Macallan is pretty much a complete joke at this point. You can get two bottles of Bunna 12 or Glenallachie 12 for the price of that swill. Both non-chill filtered and 46%. Tamdhu 15 is a banger! Glenfarclas 15 another great value in the sherry dept. cheers.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was my suspicion from the get go, and was sad to have it confirmed to be a mistake. Macallan are not impressing many aside from how far they can fall in whisky lovers books. Bunna 12, G.A. 12 are both great shouts. I enjoy Glenfarclas 15 but it has doubled in price I my area this year so it's not getting as much love anymore. Went from around $65 on offer to around $130. I have the Glenfarclas 185th to crack into at some point so I'm looking forward to that.

    • @lewisduffy675
      @lewisduffy675 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whiskyonthewestcoast I can get 'farclas 15 in Alberta for around $90 on sale still but yeah not worth much more than $100 imo. Single malt inflation hit really hard this year. I think you're going to love the 185 that's prob the best NAS I ever had. Loved it so much I bought three more for the stash cheers!

      Just my opinion, I always see many whiskey drinkers bash Macallan always for the price. I actually enjoyed this pour and the pricing is under $100 US in my local stores. Will probably buy again just to taste again :)

  • @Rohit_M
    @Rohit_M ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yikes! I feel bad for you dropping a pretty penny on this bottle. Well over 2000 bottles of this got dumped for online at LCBO $175 a pop. Based on all the reviews I've read/heard it's a must AVOID! I have 12 Sherry Oak and a Select Oak travel release from well over a decade ago. A bottle of 2022 Classic Cut is on the way which I hope doesn't disappoint. Other than that no more Macallans going forward until quality and prices settle down.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'm with you Rohit. Of the two, the Classic Cut sounds like the more promising one. And I don't plan on purchasing another official bottling from Macallan anytime soon, but I know the Harmony Intense Arabica is just down the street on a shelf waiting for me 😄 $240 plus tax is too much I tell myself, but the fear of missing out is real!

    • @Rohit_M
      @Rohit_M ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@whiskyonthewestcoast Although I never got one myself, the Harmony Rich Cacao was a good release as per various reviews. I saw Rob at Whisky in the 6's review of it and he seemed to like it. Maybe the Intense Arabica is a good release in the Harmony collection but again the price of a NAS offering from Macallan and @240, that seems a bit steep.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Rich Cacao, and it is decent, but not incredible. Watching reviews suggesting the Arabica was not as good(Whisky Wednesday did one recently) I passed on it. I may regret it, who knows.
