Just a note, I really respect your morning ritual and the spirituality of it. So a few days ago, I've decided to follow suit, sitting on the stoep with my tea and reading. What a wonderful way to start each day
It is the best! I wish I can copy Chana in that but I enjoy my tea at bedtime. In the morning is a bit crazy and I drink it while doing a million things but don't enjoy it.
👎👎 Didn't like this one. I am not mad but very disappointed and...who knows what. Women ARE obligated to study Torah, except religion flips things over to the convenience of the particular group without caring what The Almighty Father wrote as a commandment, law or decree. That is why He says "children of Israel" meaning both male and female, unless there is something specifically for men, like brit milah or for women like mikveh, but twisting things around they tell you to keep this and not that. So women miss out on using talit and tzitziot, etc, which is commanded into women as well. Judaism as praisers of Him is the answer; not Judaism as a religion with sooo many men-made commandments. As another example, the Torah states not to mention His name in vain, yet men command you not to mention it at all, which is not His word. Adonai, Elohai etc are okay as they are in the Torah but not hashem. Ha= the Shem= name so you are invoking "the name" which is any of the thousand gods there are. The worse part is that they do so knowing that you are not allowed to add to the Torah. When you do that it is following the creation and not the Creator. Also, Purim is just like the 4th of July or so because it wasandated by the queen, not by the Creator. So, it is okay to celebrate if you wish; what is WRONG is to add to the Torah saying it is a Moed -Holy Feast. Hannukah is a miracle; not a Moed either. You can have it as a reminder because it is important but it is not a commandment of The Father. That is messed up because why go through all the trouble of switching religions if you are still following man-made rules that take priority above The Father's. I respect but I don't necessarily agree. It is a commandment not to mislead your brother. I am not saying you, Chana, as in doing in purpose, no, because you, yourself were mislead. You, as a women are not reading the Torah in depth but following what you are told without searching for the truth, which is what actually brought you here. Shalom!
@@carolinamoreno5419 I think it means, women are not obligated to study Talmud, the Oral Torah. They are not forbidden, though. But, frankly speaking, I tried studying Talmud, I don’t enjoy it, I would rather just study Chumash and other books of the Tanakh and enjoy it, than figuring out what to do, if a bull falls off the neighbors’ roof and accidentally kills your goat. I’m making it up, but there are cases even crazier than this is the Talmud.
Just a sweet thing to mention. My husband also was in the room when I was in labor. When each of our 4 children were born, my husband literally danced around the room singing Shema when holding them for the first tome. It is a cherished memory that each of my children know about. When I was able, I said the blessing for a boy or girl along with shehechiyanu. It still brings happy tears of joy to me. His reasoning was that he wanted HaShem in their lives from their first moments of life. Shabbat Shalom! This q and a was so interesting!!
I really like your attitude. Honestly, I am a Roman Catholic. I love my religion, but also believe that Jesus was born a Jew. So, my feelings are that I love Jewish people, if that makes sense. Thank you for all the insight. I love watching your channel. Take care and God bless!
Good morning I just want to take a minute to thank you. I can’t tell you enough how appreciative I am for your openness. I try to teach my children that if they have a question about a persons culture or beliefs depending on the relationship it’s better to politely ask the question than wonder in silence. I don’t know why it is the fear of offending someone kicks in when we approach these types of questions. People like you are what I hope my kids encounter if they have questions. A nice open person who understands that curiosity is often just a yearning to understand another human. It’s nice when a person is okay sharing the reasons behind beliefs or behaviors. To me that takes down walls, builds bridges ,and knits people together where once their might have been a separation. I think the world would be so much better with more people like you in it. I’m glad your kids have the benefit of learning your warmth and openness. Goodness knows the world needs more nonjudgmental open honest people ready to communicate with kindness. Gah! So excited for this. I recently found your channel. I am a traditional catholic and I respect your story of conversion. As another person of faith, I LOVE your description of how you feel freed by all the laws and restrictions. I feel absolutely the same. Also, I almost choked laughing when you said “I drank the kool-aid”. 🤣
Actually I'm a convert to Islam and I find it really interesting what you share in your Videos and I like your personality very much, so light-hearted and positive. I hope to see and learn more about your life as an orthodox jew. I find so many similarities between our faiths. ⚘
@@arosemorose No, I converted from Christianity. But because of my name, and it's association with Judaism, I 'm interested in the religion, culture and even trying to learn jiddish 😅
Thanks so much for the Q&A’s. As a conservative Jew, I respect your choices very much. You are a natural teacher. I explain to my friends and family, the mitzvot are for drawing closer to and becoming more like Hashem, it’s all about self improvement which leads to bringing heaven to earth. When studying the Tanach, we learn how the Jews before us succeeded or fell short, how to make better choices in all our ways. There I look for inspiration to keep going on so many levels. When each person improves themselves, the family is improved, when families are improved the community is improved….eventually the world is improved.
Totally agree! Love how you worded that. Someone told me once that mitzvot are a physical way to a spiritual result or something like that. I thought that was really cool
I really enjoy watching your channel. I'm a secular Jew who grew up going to the only orthodox synagogue in San Diego. We were very good friends with the rabbi. Life intervened, including college classes in existentialism, so here I am. I still love all the cultural aspects of being Jewish. I think your channel shows the power of the Internet to do something good: provide a way to learn about different cultures, lifestyles, and religions. With all the divisiveness in the country today, we need to reach out to each other and share our basic humanity.
I appreciate your Q and A videos so much. I find them very helpful in understanding Orthodox Judaism better. Thank you for taking the time to explain your culture and religion.
Good morning Chana! Thank you once again for a very informative Q and A video. I agree with you and think women are more spiritual than men. Bringing life into this world is hard work and our emotional strength and spirituality see us through. I hope all of your upcoming holidays will be extra special and filled with love and joy! 😊❤
I love your videos Chana! You're honesty and openness and willingness to share your experience as an orthodox Jewish person is beautiful. I love learning and really understanding how people of different beliefs live, and you do that so well. Thanks again, from Australia
I really loved your thoughts on creationism. As a child, I couldn't understand how God created the world in 7 days, when it takes months to build a house. My father explained it to me and it made sense. I was driving my daughter, then aged 4, when she asked "mama, how does the sky stay up?". I fumbled for a moment. She then said "oh I know, God holds it up". I'm not sure how I could have explained the reality, but children have a wonderful ability to simplify matters which could tie adults up in knots.
You’re so right about kids! I’m so glad we have the internet available so I can Google things for my kids. Now when I say “I don’t know” they want me to Google it lolol
Chana, I am so glad that you do these Q & A’s. You have made me realize how much I have missed my Judaism these past years. I am now trying to bring it back into my life. I do try to do some readings every morning, but I still have a long way to go. Lighting Sabat candles and making challah again are in my near future. Thank you. Shabbat shalom.
Oh my gosh that’s amazing!!!!! Wow! If you want my regular challah recipe (like not gluten free) email me and I’ll send it to you! Wow! You made my day!
@@jaroffireflies , thank you for that offer, but I have celiac like your son. Everything in my house needs to be gluten free except for my husbands d granddaughter’s snacks. I do sneak in many gluten free snacks for her, but she is lucky at 22 months old!
I also love my personal relationship with God. I try to spend every morning before my husband gets up reading my Bible. I am now rereading Genesis with an emphasis on studying the way God began the Jewish nation after the flood. I also tend to believe the old earth. I'm a Christian but I also LOVE the old testament. I'm so happy to have a friend like you who is an Orthodox Jewish woman. Thanks for showing up on utube.
I know my opinion on your kids names doesn't matter in the slightest, however I think its brilliant that they just have one name. What a fantastic way to fully tie them to their culture and who they are and it wont confusing to them growing up, in the way of having almost different identities in different settings. It's also not necessarily a bad thing that people have to learn a name that's new them... interacting with people different to ourselves should be the norm.
I love these. Especially the part about our relationship with Hashem growing at different rates. I needed some downtime after converting reform and wasn’t surprised when I needed it after finishing my orthodox conversion. Just time to daven at home, a couple rabbinic zoom classes and a couple TH-cam lectures a week while I finished fall canning. I love davening at shul. Just recharging some batteries.
This video is a real gift to help folks understand Judaism - I am becoming more open with my own Jewish identity for this very reason (for example inviting non-Jewish friends over for Shabbat dinner). Thank you for the inspo Chana!
I think the reason why I love your channel so much is because my grandpa converted to Judaism to marry my step grandma (in my opinion it was the sweetest thing he could have ever done). He passed away when I was 18, and my first experience of Judaism was a funeral. I feel like I'm learning everything he never got to teach me about Judaism. So thank you. I know I spam your comments all the time, but I just truly appreciate you and this channel.
May your grandpa's memory be a blessing. I am so sorry for your loss. I am so happy though that my channel is able to bring you closer to him as you are leaning more about Judaism!
Watching your Q&A’s gives me so much more appreciation for your religion and beliefs! You speak with such pride and it’s nice to see that you have friends/family with different backgrounds and are able to all respect one another’s cultures/ religions! Much love 💕
Thank you for sharing more of your life and faith journey. It’s really beautiful to see how your faith encompasses your daily life and teaching your children the same way. It really doesn’t seem as restrictive as people may think. I guess it also depends on which sect you’re in same as some other Christian faiths.
You are so welcome! It’s definitely not restricting, I’m glad you see that. There is such an emphasis on free will in Judaism also, everything is our choice. Including whether to be observant or not. We choose to observe these obligations :)
I enjoyed your Q&A! It was very informative and you are such a sweet person🥰 I like your discussion on gender roles and I agree! I think we live in a society where women and men are in constant competition with each other. I think it’s better to embrace our differences as women and men and just enjoy it☺️
Absolutely love your content. I’ve said it before but your genuine and positive spirit is absolutely contagious. I hope you and your family have a great rest of the week 😊
I love learning about your religion and customs. Raised as a Catholic, I am no longer observant. I love and find comfort in the traditions, but not the roles women are allowed to have. I consider myself spiritual, rather than tied any particular religion as there are certain aspects of every religion that appeals to me. It's amazing how similar most religions are, as it's the way we worship that seems to differ. Which, to me, is wonderful in itself. I appreciate the respect your religion pays to its women, and the importance of their roles. They are more revered than most others, and that's so refreshing as most women are treated as appendages to men. Thank you for sharing with us. It's very informative and much appreciated. Bless you!
When you were going through the conversion process, how did it come about that you converted to Orthodox Judaism specifically? Was there a particular time when you consciously decided this? Oh is it a matter of what classes and such were available to you? Have you ever attended a conservative or reform synagogue?
Hi Zara! I answer all these questions in my conversion series. It’s three videos and here is a link to the first: th-cam.com/video/BfJxZH3rKKI/w-d-xo.html Part 2 and 3 are linked in the description of that video. Enjoy!
I went vegan years ago, and I never would have thought to have anything to relate to in a Jewish Q&A but when you said all you missed was convenience in regards to kosher eating I was yelling ME TOO! Lol After all those years I miss nothing perticular, I know how to make anything I want, but vegan. But the convinience of calling for a pizza or just walk into a store and buy anything that I want. I can miss that sometimes. And even that is getting less and less by the year, You just learn what you like and can buy and as time goes by you just adjust and tend to miss nothing. So yeah...its true there realy is something to relate to with everybody ;)
Chana, thanks so much, I love these Q and A’s. When you were speaking about creationism it made me smile because I don’t know anyone around me who believes in that type of creationism like I do:)
@@jaroffireflies yes, it’s made the most sense to me personally. Like you said, who knows how long the days were back then, the length of days fluctuates today between the seasons.
These are great! I’m learning as much about the Jar of Fireflies community by the questions as I am about your life/family/community from the answers. ❤️
You and I are super different humans and I feel like it would be so interesting to like have a tea and just chat (I’m very much agnostic and I just find folks beliefs and the why fascinating). Thank you so much for being open and sharing.
I’m LOVING your channel. You mentioned the Bible & Genesis being your favorite book. As you know as a former Catholic, the Catholic Bible has included the “missing” books. Does the Jewish Bible include these “Missing” books?
Thank you so much Rena! The Torah is these 5 books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. There is also the Tanakh, in which sense it includes not only those first five I just mentioned, but all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible. And we also have lots of rabbinic writings on the Torah which is our Oral Torah and also extremely important to us :)
I absolutely love all of your video's, Chana - but especially these ones :) I actually can't wait for your videos to come out every week and it seems I am not the only one! You are such a special person - thank you for sharing your life, beliefs, loves and passions with us all. It is amazing that so many "strangers" care so much about what you have to say - it is truly a blessing from G-d xoxo!
I always loved the saying that in the Bible God comes to women wherever they are, like as they’re taking care of their daily daily chores. I pray and talk to God while doing all kinds of things. ❤️
Has anyone done a Purim velociraptor that you've seen, speaking of fun costumes? :) (This question did make me google if anyone has ever asked a rabbi whether eating dinosaurs (other than specific kosher birds among their modern descendants) was kosher, and yes, this has been discussed, at length, and it's fascinating.)
Oh that’s so fun! I’m sure someone has been a velociraptor! But I’ve not seen one :) I wanted to do a Dino Dana theme one year so I could be a dinosaur 😂 But I couldn’t get everyone on board lol
Thank you for your honesty, sharing your life and beliefs as well as your opinions. Some interesting questions and info. As always I look forward to watching your videos and appreciate your candour.😊
What s diverse range of topics you covered here today Chana!! Marathon runner and Marathon question answerer!!!!👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you so much for taking time to answer everything. I would love to see a video about the Mikvah. I saw such a lovely video about women discussing it and how much it means to them and their marriage. It would be great to hear a little deeper into your perspective and what it means to you, and having some footage inside ones in your area would be a nice insight.
@@jaroffireflies This video called “The Gift of Mikvah” on YT really opened my eyes, educated me, and changed my perspective. I didn’t fully understand it before but now I think it’s beautiful and I’m actually quite enamored by it. I can’t wait to hear your orthodox experience and perspective! ❤️
Another good Q and A, Chana. I have been busy and may be in and out for a while. My sisters and I are caring for our 91 yo mom who fell and broke her foot. So if I do not comment, that is why!! Happy Tnanksgiving to you and your family.
Hi Chana! Are restrictions exhausting? No for me too! I love your answer - same for me. The restrictions, the structure help me to connect with Hashem and enjoy my relationship with Him so much more. I don't know if it's a Chabad or Ashkenazic Orthodox thing but the couples I know when they have their babies, the husbands are not in the room during delivery. The woman will have different females supporting her: Mom, sister, sister-in-law, doula, good friend. The husband will be right outside and comes in after. One couple I know has a beautiful tradition - after the baby is born, the nurse brings the baby to him and he washes their hands. I love your Q&As so much! I'm getting to know more about you and Sephardic ways! I've known some Sephardic people but never knew a lot of differences other than we have different pronunciations of vowels and words. You've been teaching me a lot!
Thank you so much for sharing! I love that! I’ve doula-ed for a lot of Ashkenaz couples and the husband has always been in the room. Could be Cham as or community :)
Yeey! You've answered my questions, thank you so much for that! I wish you a great weekend, including your mini holiday! Greetings from The Netherlands
Good Morning! Mary Lou Silk here from Pittsburgh PA. How are you and your family? Hope all is well. I loved your Q&A! Thank you for sharing. I do have 2 questions that you may have already answered previously and I just don't remember. Did you have to get permission from your Rabbi to be on TH-cam? Do you and your family celebrate the secular New Year (January 1)? Let me know if you can, or wait until you do your next Q&A. I want to wish you and your entire family a Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Channukah!!!!! Looking forward to your next video. I enjoy them so much! Take Care. Mary Lou
Good afternoon Mary Lou! We are well thank G-d! Hope you are well also! I did not ask my rabbi before I started my TH-cam channel but he does know about it. We do celebrate New Years. The kids enjoy staying up and having a little party :) I’m always down for making a fun experience for them!
You always seem to be so upbeat. Have you always been this way? I often find myself feeling grumpy 😠 Any tips for how to keep an upbeat, positive attitude?

I love seeing all your homeschool supplies. I'm in my conversion process right now, but I was raised Christian & homeschooled, and seeing your shelves of school materials makes me think of how much I loved my schooling experience. And it reminds me to call my mama!
You're so lovely Chana! Sometime ago you asked if we might be interested in seeing your wedding video and I for one would love to see it...so one day if you are able...I can imagine how beautiful it was! 🙂
I love the positive way in which you present orthodox Jewry and as your sister I am very proud of you and your family. Are you open to a little constructive criticism? I wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings
Thank you :) People give me constructive and not so constructive criticism here all the time. I am me though and that’s what I give here on my channel :)
I think you may not be aware of the negative connotation of “I drank the kool aid” - it makes orthodox Jewry sound like a cult. I’m sure that could not have been your intention given the highly positive content of your channel. Please continue to make a Kiddush HaShem. Lots of love
Hello, Chana, I hope that you and your family are well. I am excited to hear your opinions on some of these topics. I think we will probably think the same way about a lot of topics. Gut Shabbos!
@@jaroffireflies I definitely agree with a lot of what you said, yes. We are both Old Earth Creationists. As a psychology student, I was fascinated by your insight into gender roles and their link to how men and women tend to behave and think anyway.
Please tell your husband thank you for sharing his fish recipe. I love that he cuts carrots on an angle. When I was a teenager I read something about why carrots taste better cut on an angle. It has to do with the cell structure of carrots and they do taste different to me. (Better) Thank you for sharing that we can also try this recipe with beef. I can't wait to try it. I tried to comment on your video that day but it wouldn't show up.
I love seeing the similarities between Judaism and Islam. Similarly men are required to go to the mosque to pray and we can stay home, which I think is awesome.

What is your favourite holiday? Mine is Simchat Torah. It's just so magical to end Devarim and start Bereshit again! The hardest holiday for me is Pesach. I have some extreme digestive disorders and eating matzah can cause me to have a bowel blockage, so I have to be very careful.
Ohhhh I love them all for different reasons! Purim is probably my absolute favorite but I do love pesach so much for the family traditions and family visits :)
Thank you for doing the Q&As, I appreciate your openness, enthusiasm and honesty. I'm looking forward to learning more about the Mikvah experience which I know a little about through watching different youtubers. Although it is a cleansing/renewal of the body, it seems to me that it's like a spa for the soul too and is a precious experience.
Hey Chana! Thanks for the video - very informative. I can clearly see I'm not alone when it comes to really, really wanting to try your husband's fish dish recipe. It feels like questions about the recipe are always among the most asked ones. ;) Loved hearing about your marathon experiences.
I always find your Q&A very interesting and enjoy listening to you on issues of the Jewish faith. My question: it is written "You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk". That explains the separation of meat and dairy products. But if I prepare poultry, where the mother does not produce any milk at all, this law would have to be suspended, that would at least seem logical?
Thank you for sharing, I enjoy your Q and A's and appreciate your input. Please thank your husband for me for the recipe and suggestion of oxtail, I can almost smell it cooking!
It’s important to be a woman in Judaism. The child is the mothers religion…not the mens. Additionally, women are so revered that if she is pregnant and loses her baby, her life is the most important thing so she is saved…to lose a baby is horrendous and most women would selflessly say “save my baby” so at times, the decision is made for her. A home, especially one with kidlets, is of tantamount import and she is needed at home. One more thing, women say most of the blessings at home, if not all. After the devastating holocaust, families were urged to replace themselves with babies, however, not a command. Thank you, Chana for another beautiful video. Please let me know if I’m mistaken about these things. It’s been 30 years since my conversion! I’m reform so these things might be different. Lol 🥰🕊
Hope you are all having a fantastic day! Let me know if you have any follow up questions! I will do my best to get to them!

Actually I'm a convert to Islam and I find it really interesting what you share in your Videos and I like your personality very much, so light-hearted and positive. I hope to see and learn more about your life as an orthodox jew. I find so many similarities between our faiths. ⚘
Thanks Regina! I’m so glad you’re here!
Oh hey me too!Judging by your name I'd say same as me, converted from Judaism?
Thank you so much for your kind words Jackie! I really appreciate you and I’m so glad you’re here
I appreciate your Q and A videos so much. I find them very helpful in understanding Orthodox Judaism better. Thank you for taking the time to explain your culture and religion.
You are so welcome Sara! Thanks so much for being here :)

Good morning Chana! Thank you once again for a very informative Q and A video. I agree with you and think women are more spiritual than men. Bringing life into this world is hard work and our emotional strength and spirituality see us through. I hope all of your upcoming holidays will be extra special and filled with love and joy! 😊❤
Thank you so much Karen!
I love your videos Chana! You're honesty and openness and willingness to share your experience as an orthodox Jewish person is beautiful. I love learning and really understanding how people of different beliefs live, and you do that so well. Thanks again, from Australia
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and kind words! I really appreciate you!
I love how you talked about what is a day to God because you put it how I want to but don't have the words.
So glad that resonated with you!

Aw thanks so much for being here!!! Your morning routine sounds lovely Deborah :)
My kids still get their names messed up all the time :) But that’s ok :)
Thanks for sharing!!
This video is a real gift to help folks understand Judaism - I am becoming more open with my own Jewish identity for this very reason (for example inviting non-Jewish friends over for Shabbat dinner). Thank you for the inspo Chana!
You’re so very welcome!!!! 💜💜💜
Much love 💕
Thank you so very much! I’m so glad you’re here!!!
I don't know exactly why but I find your videos to be comforting, like going to my grandma's house when I was a kid.
Aw thanks :)
I think it’s better to embrace our differences as women and men and just enjoy it☺️
Thank you so much Kelly! And yes, I totally agree with you :)
Absolutely love your content. I’ve said it before but your genuine and positive spirit is absolutely contagious. I hope you and your family have a great rest of the week 😊
Thank you so very much Kelsey! I really appreciate your kind words 💜💜💜
Bless you!
You are such a joyful person! I love watching your videos because your joy is contagious and it fills me up--Thank you!

You’re so very welcome Mackenzie!
Lol
After all those years I miss nothing perticular, I know how to make anything I want, but vegan.
I love that! Thank you for sharing! Yes, you totally get what I’m saying :)
Chana, thanks so much, I love these Q and A’s. When you were speaking about creationism it made me smile because I don’t know anyone around me who believes in that type of creationism like I do:)

Your honesty is refreshing.

Has anyone done a Purim velociraptor that you've seen, speaking of fun costumes? :)
(This question did make me google if anyone has ever asked a rabbi whether eating dinosaurs (other than specific kosher birds among their modern descendants) was kosher, and yes, this has been discussed, at length, and it's fascinating.)

Great question! We consider poultry to be meat for the purposes of kosher cooking. So we would not serve chicken for example with cheese.
"I don't need to go to the schul to have a relationship with God"

Lol 🥰🕊
