      To be honest as a Brit, Top Gear USA from say season 3/4 onwards is pretty decent. It's challenges every episode. It's definitely much better than Chris Evans Top Gear. They've grown into their own good chemistry now.

      Top Gear USA went its own route instead of trying to fill their daddy's shoes. Best decision they ever made.

      +Craig MacGillicutty I find it typical that you go on about "an American focus group", capitalizing on being American, rather than NAMING the blokes IN THE GROUP that actually ruined it.

    I was very disappointed with the US version. In the US version, they basically just use BBC Top Gear storylines and challenges with a very poor selection of talentless presenters .... all seems fake, forced and unfortunately....not very entertaining.
    I suppose if I had never, ever viewed Top Gear UK on BBC ... the USA version might not seem so gawd awful shitty.

    • @RustyShackelfurt
      @RustyShackelfurt 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They've moved away from the BBC version stuff lately and it's gotten pretty good. I'd also argue that the UK version was awful at first, especially the first series, until the presenters started to get more confident and familiar with each other. I think the same will happen with the US version.

      I wouldn't like to label those guys talentless, its just that they should have done their own thing rather than try to emulate what the three Top Gear UK guys did. Top Gear only works so well due to the three guys unique chemistry and personalities but it doesn't work when others try to fake it.

    It wasn't the viewers that didn't get it...it was the people who made the show. Nothing about TG America reminded me of the original. The banter, the comedy, the charisma, the tongue in cheek self awareness....these are what make Top gear so fun to watch and all were missing from the American show. I wanna hang out with the UK hosts, I wanna run over the US hosts with my car.

    Top Gear USA's underperformance has nothing to do with viewers 'not getting it' and everything with it's producers not getting it.
    What makes Top Gear UK so special is it has three eccentric blokes with unique and unusual but genuinely entertaining personalities who get to interact with each other around a subject they are genuinely passionate about, the silly stunts simply act as a springboard for them to bounce off each other.
    Top Gear USA mucked-up the format a bunch before finally settling on doing nothing but the stunts, dispensing with all of the other stuff that would help establish the USA presenters' personalities and their chemistry with each other, you're just not allowed to care about them one way or the other.
    The result is less 'An American Top Gear' so much as 'Jackass, now with more cars and slightly less vomit.'

    Jeremy doesn't like America or Americans, so of course his perspective is that the show failed because of the audience. But shows never fail because of the audience... they only fail because they suck, or because they're poorly scheduled or promoted. It's too bad, too, because he'd do well to recognize that why Top Gear is successful has nothing to do with the UK (or worldwide) audience, and everything to do with the absolutely marvelous chemistry between him and his co-presenters. As an American, I'd watch Top Gear UK over Top Gear America any day. It's a genuinely good show on its own with the hosts it has. It doesn't need an American version.

    • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They dumbed it down for the US audience. When I watched the US version all I could think about was that the producers changed it to avoid a lot of conversations and put in explosions instead. It is pretty insulting actually and the ultimate failure of the show should demonstrate that the US audience is actually more sophisticated than they assumed. The massive popularity of the UK show with US audiences is proof of that much. All the changes they did to try to make it appeal to a fictional stereotype of an American just made the show worse in the eyes of the actual audience.

    • @BelegCuthali0n
      @BelegCuthali0n 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jeremy Clarkson doesn't specifically dislike Americans or America. He slags off everybody, whether it's the Americans, Canadians, Australians, French, Italians, Germans, Dutch, etc... but most of all he slags off the British. I think that's why the original Top Gear is so successful, because they do not compromise out of political correctness. I think the problem with the American version was that they tried to copy the formula, but have presenters try not to offend anyone at the same time and that just doesn't work.

    • @brandonarmes9074
      @brandonarmes9074 9 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @KuntaKinteToby

    Problem with Top Gear USA in my eyes is the commentators/presenters try too hard to be funny and force chemistry. The funny moments between May, Clarckson, and Hammond, and their chemistry is not forced, it is natural and they are good friends in real life as well. You can't force that to happen, it just is or it isn't. Content wise the US version is good, their reviews are accurate and the challenges are interesting, its just the way its presented comes off as forced. Also like EVERY American show its cut to seem more dramatic than it really is, which I find annoying.

  • @toiletroom

    As and American, top gear USA is absolute garbage and top gear U.K. is genuinely my favorite show. Top gear USA is a complete joke, the producers are not funny and you get the sense that none of it is real. Honestly though American television is garbage so my fellow Americans just watch and simply don't get it.

      I will say sadly I see moments in their latest episodes some thing feel forced or just plain faked in the UK series, I love the UK series but I hope they don't keep.doing these little fake bits playing off their real. When they pee'd in Hammonds shower water it was clearly them squeezing water bottles and then they carried it through another bit that just felt fake. Don't get me wrong I understand it just wasn't for me but I wanna see them do their old school genuine shannagins.

    • @russellrummage
      @russellrummage 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a very long time ago since Top Gear was a genuine magazine show, it is now just an entertainment show. When I was a wee nipper, so I can't really remember when it was genuine. After a period of absence it returned in...I dunno, the very late nineties or early 2000's which is the current format, which has evolved more and more into a pure entertainment show. So it's very much faked (or at least heavily scripted is a better way of putting it), and the hosts admit it.
      But I will agree, I have seen a bit of the American version and they are as subtle as this simile is successful...

    The US version has been a disaster since day one. On the one hand it is a direct scripted rip-off of the UK version, pretty much devoid of any originality and on the other hand they sneer at all things British. The three actors chosen to take off the British trio have no chemistry, they don't seem to have a relationship other than working for the same program.
    It is interesting that most of the comments are about TGUSA when this was filmed in Australia. Clarkson is such a public school southern tosser, it's difficult to credit that anyone could be so crass.

      The largest portion of U.S. debt, 68 cents for every dollar or about $10 trillion, is owned by individual investors, corporations, state and local governments and, yes, even foreign governments such as China that hold Treasury bills, notes and bonds.
      Foreign governments hold about 46 percent of all U.S. debt held by the public, more than $4.5 trillion. The largest foreign holder of U.S. debt is China, which owns more about $1.2 trillion in bills, notes and bonds, according to the Treasury.
      In total, China owns about 8 percent of publicly held U.S. debt. Of all the holders of U.S. debt China is the third-largest, behind only the Social Security Trust Fund's holdings of nearly $3 trillion and the Federal Reserve's nearly $2 trillion holdings in Treasury investments, purchased as part of its quantitative easing program to boost the economy.
      So, We never borrowed money from China until recently. Yet they own and hold more US debt than any other foreign country. Currently the US Government has another debt ceiling limit coming up for a vote, and the government may yet again shut down......
      Hmmmm when I was younger the government NEVER shut down over debt limits.... I guess that must be a sign of positive progress!!!! LOL

    Top Gear America (I think that's the correct name of the show) is awful. Rutledge Wood is the only real "car guy" on the show, but he comes off as a computer geek who might fall asleep at any time. The other two guys are only there to fill up space, and don't seem to know anything at all about cars, and have no interest in learning. The guy with the Bronx / Jersey accent, whatever his name is, could use a good ass-kicking to set him right, and the other guy seems like a wannabe suit-and-tie business clown who hasn't found the correct cubicle to sit in.
    The whole premise of the show seems to be to see how many cars they can destroy, and often the cars that they mangle are good condition older or classic cars that could be restored or hot-rodded. They don't actually test or review cars, they just abuse and destroy them while pretending to have a purpose for their actions.
    I hope that in the very near future, Top Gear America will be cancelled. The show is an insult to the original BBC production.

    Okay, everyone. First off: I am as American as they come. I was born in the US, I was in Boy Scouts, I was in Explorer Scouts, and I own 6 guns, and more ammunition than socks and underwear. I absolutely LOVE my country.
    All that being said: the American Edition of Top Gear was absolute SHIT. I am SO GLAD they cancelled the show! Please don't EVER do another American Edition of Top Gear again! We Americans may be alot of things, but one thing we appreciate is Originality. That is something that the American Edition just didn't have. Keep it original, and keep it real.

    Speaking as someone from the states I am absolutely tired of out abysmal remakes of British shows. House of Cards is pretty good but most of the others are junk and Top Gear is no exception. Why would I watch some Americans trying to do the real Top Gear when I can just watch the real Top Gear. Seriously. They should just air British shows in the USA and give them a larger market share rather than spitting out these crappy renditions of them. P.S. I'm fully aware that they do air some shows on BBC America but BBC America is a joke. They play the hell out of like 3 or 4 British shows and then for some inexplicable reason they show us our own shows. Why the hell to I want to watch Star Trek on BBC America? Seriously? No, no, no. It's not US viewers that don't get it as previous posts have pointed it. It's most definitely the industry and producers, which doesn't surprise me at all as it's the US "entertainment" industry who would rather spend millions hassling downloaders, ISPs, and holding back internet infrastructure than to simply stream their shows so people can watch them when and where the want. It's the same backwards idiocy that fights the internet tooth and nail that is putting out the Americanized, formulaic and simply bad versions of otherwise good shows.

    We've been nicking British television for years, and with mixed results. "Three's Company", "All In the Family", those sort of worked out. The American attempt at "Life On Mars" was crap, and by the time they got around to trying to clone "Top Gear", they basically had cocaine apes sitting in a production office saying "Just do all the crashes and have them make remarks about them, you know, guy stuff".

    I’m an American and I will say the US version sucks. It doesn’t matter who you get. You can’t compare with Jeremy, James, and Richard. It’s like remaking and good old western you will never succeed in it.
    The 3 have something no other 3 car guys could possibly have. The antics the laughter the crashing into each other the beautiful country sides the wonderful cars. It all rolls together that’s why these guys work. America has tried actors, race car drivers, people from other countries and a host of other gimmicks but, failed everyone. America tries to imitate these guys. You have a brain, a driver, and a kinda goof you can’t teach that. You either have it or you don’t.

The US hosts do try but I think they are just too young and their humor is aimed at a younger crowd that probably isn't watching (hypercar gas guzzling Lambos are SO uncool to the wheatgrass chewing Prius driving generation) and they don't really get what makes the Brit show so much fun to watch. Its all too PC and too forced. I wish there was more spontaneous humor like on the Brit version.

    Spare me. Clarkson has raised deniability to the title line of his CV. Every word is cored with hyperbole, laced with irony and fired with the kind of Top (Gear) spin that makes it drop into a black hole he keeps in his shirt pocket, right behind his smokes. His whole theme is to be able to say anything and own up to nothing -- and get paid more with each and every new contract. He's the mouthpiece of every Anglo-chauvinist who rants in his cups that the American Revolution was the greatest miscarriage of history since the fall of Rome. To any Royal abject who has the courage to salute the inevitable, have a Guinness on my tab.

    America needs a Top Gear in the same way that Australia and East Asia need Top Gears. Driving culture is totally different in each of the locations, and they each have different cars that are dominant. America is one of the world's largest producers of cars and is home to three of the largest companies, yet the only thing Top Gear UK says about American cars is, "They can't turn, pause for audience chuckle, and now onto the BMW..." I agree with everyone that the current hosts just do not mesh. Part of the charm for Top Gear UK is that none of the guys have a real car background, they all went to art school. They're just three guys who really like cars. Top Gear US has Adam Ferrera who is a comedian, but then it has Rutledge and Tanner who both worked in the racing industry as an analyst and a freaking driver. Cut those two out, bring in Jay Leno and Adam Carolla, and try to make the challenges more America-centric rather than copying the British ones, and I'm sure that you'll have a show that's plenty good.

    Everyone I know watches the BBC Top Gear instead of the US version (which is pretty lame by comparison), but I can see why it doesn't catch on here in the States like it has throughout the rest of the world. Most Americans don't get satire. Unless you act like Stephen Colbert, and you're over-the-top with it, Americans will think you're being serious. And, in the case of Top Gear, a lot of Americans think it's "racist". They've had a very strong sense of political correctness instilled in them since childhood, and any kind of ethnic slur will make them feel uncomfortable. So whereas everyone else can laugh at themselves, Americans cringe and change the channel.

Essentially, the US version, will forever live in the shadow of the UK version and will most likely never be able to gain that type of reputation. TESLA LOST: "In my view the case pleaded in support of the claim for special damages is, to say the least, very thin on its own terms," said Justice Bick, who sat alongside Lord Justice Maurice Kay and Lord Justice Rimer.
    He added: "Moreover, on the basis of the material currently before the court I do not think that there is any real prospect of Tesla's being able to demonstrate at trial that it has suffered any quantifiable loss by reason of any of the actionable statements."
