Honestly man can't thank you enough for this, I'm not a high end content runner by any means but it's absolutely refreshing to know that outside of leaderboard runs it doesnt matter at all what race you choose
When I made an arcanist, I hadn't looked at the arcanist class very much and I didn't know what I wanted to do in terms of mag or stam, so I picked a khajiit, since I already have too many dunmer. This turned out to be an awkward choice since arcanist gets 12% crit damage from their passives, in addition to khajiit. This made it so that on the dummy as a khajiit arcanist I am above the crit cap without allocating a single other source of crit damage. My max parse on khajiit hit around 101k, but when I noticed the situation with the crit cap and switched to orc, my max parse jumped up to 110k. This is probably a much more dramatic difference than race differences will almost ever make, and I realize that in less organized groups that lack minor brittle and elemental catalyst, I wouldn't be at the cap even as an arcanist. I do not do score pushing, but I am working on progging vet trial hard modes, and in these situations it's pretty likely that the group does have ec and minor brittle, and so for what I was trying to do I feel that khajiit arcanist was really suboptimal, and that I had to make that race change. But I think this is specific to khajiit arcanist, I think khajiit of all other classes are much better positioned. I would perhaps recommend to other players who want to pick pretty good races for their roles, if not the absolute best tool in the shed for all situations, to not pick a khajiit arcanist DPS.
in my experience it matters a little bit at a baseline level, but if you want to be a Nord mage or a breton stamblade, nothing stops you from doing that AND performing well while doing so. you may actually find that some builds are easier with non meta race combos. for instance breton magicka bonuses can help a stamina nightblade use its stealth ability more, which always costs magicka.
When I dps, I mostly just do 4 man, and 2man pledges. I recently tried changing my Stamina Sorcerer to Wood Elf because I found that my stamina sustain for Coral in content (using spell pots) required me to use sustain food on Dark Elf. I figured that being able to use bi stat, and gaining a line of pen for medium armor would be worth it. Boy was it. I know these aren't as helpful in trials but I don't really do those. Plus I just like being a wood elf 😅
I started playing eso a few months ago and chose a Breton mage arcanist. I always picked Breton when playing Oblivion and Skyrim because I love the druidic/Celtic inspiration behind their races lore. I didn't notice how OP they were until I played ESO. They're really stacked with magic, and their resistance to magic is wildly beneficial. Love the Bretons.
I pvp with a DK Argonian, no sustain on my build and I found it even better than when I was dunmer. They have access to so much sustain, it makes it better.
tldw; There are objective bests but it only matters if you're trying to min/max. For all other content, casual or serious, it doesn't matter. You can play a Magicka build with a race that has only Stamina passives and it won't ruin your character. I would like to note however that passives like fall damage reduction or successful pickpocket can make noticeable differences, but those aren't related to combat. You may survive higher falls as a Wood Elf or steal more successfully as a Khajiit but those things aren't going to effect how well you Heal, Tank or DPS.
I normally pick a race that supports my build style somewhat, but RP is fun when character designing so I kinda care for that these days unless it's for tanking lol! I'll pretty much always go Nord / Imp / Argonian for tanking
I know I'm boring but I just give my characters whatever playstyle they have a Racial bonus for. So Bosmer is a ranger, High Elf is a Sorcerer, Nord uses 2-hand, etc.
Its so true, I have 13 toons. I enjoy having 1-2 of each class, with a mag/stam variant using different races, sets and weapon types. Mostly aimed towards thematic builds like a bow/bow wood elf stam warden (cuz nature). I can tell you without a doubt, im almost always 50-70% of the group dps in random normal/vet dungeons. This is one of the only MMO's where no matter what you use, skill, rotation and game knowledge is the biggest deciding factor to DPS success. The average player (especially forum warriors) spend way too much time hyper focussing on DPS parse meta builds. Usually the difference between optimal sets and races comes down to 5-10% DPS. At bare minimum, a successful build is about 1: getting enough sustain that you dont need to heavy attack frequently, and can rely on potions/synergies to top up. 2: adjusting CP, armor and traits so that you're not constantly over pen or crit dmg cap. 3: A rotation that you actually enjoy and can reliably keep up in any scenario. All that being said, buff Redguard, Wood Elf and Argonian. They're severely outdated and poorly designed.
Ty Skinny as usual well done. I just wish you could adjust the passives to make every race viable to the content you want to do. Having a V HM trail with all Orcs or lizards would be cool instead of have to have must have Nord tanks for resists , must have this, must have that .. we have that with sets... Game need to open the flood gates a little, spice it up
Something you need to note also is that racial differences will feel more impactful in solo play, same as class choice and a variety of other factors. What i mean by this is that trial dummy buffs dial your dps to 11/10, but you wont have that in solo play. So lets say youre working with a base of 100 and trial buffs give you +10, or a base of 105 and get the same +10 from trial dummy buffs. The difference between 110 and 115 is smaller than the difference between 100 and 105. In solo play, and especially in solo arenas the difference between races is far greater than just 5% +/-, it can be monumental
Need zos to separate the passives from the races or remove the dps specific passives so people can truly play what they want. That being said my arcanist is going back to argonian from khajiit, simply because argonians look cooler lol
Best Races in Short: DPS = Dark Elf Healer = Dark Elf (can swap to dps if you want) Tank = Nord or Imperial. Solo Content = Khajit Overall doesn't matter much. Skill is 10000000× more important.
So, I've been a Redguard on my main Templar since I started. After Redguards were damage-nerfed and made into one of the sustain races, I was okay with that. I have been slightly tempted to race change recently, though, & abandon my repping, because Redguard's weapon skill cost reduction passive runs contrary to the new cool version of the Solar Barrage skill that increases damage of class abilities by 5% - class abilities are where it's at for Templar and most of those are magicka to boot (only Biting Jabs, PotL, Rune Focus, and Binding Javelin are stamina). Templar tanks are the worst in the game with no aoe crowd control, no health-based burst heal, or buffs that can't be applied by any other templar in group. So, I dunno. For anyone starting out at this moment in time, I would not recommend this combo. A much better one would be High Elf. In fact, pretty much any race besides Redguard on Templar right now is a better choice.
Hey, my templar is also a Redguard. Try some bow skills, they have quite a few dots and hit hard, together with deadly strike set my templar does very well in both PvE and PvP.
No. Video over. I play a Breton Bowblade, convince me that the extra magicka buffs aren’t useful, you can boil every race/class combination down to that component.
Not sure how it is nowadays but when I actively played ESO most raid leaders dont understand this concept explained in the video and flat out refuses to take people with "unoptimal" race, especially for DPS... So while its true you can donit with any race, you are still at the mercy of the community.
Your Dunmer name though-- "I Love Argonians I swear" hahahahaha. I wish they were your in game names as well. hahaha. My favorite is and will always be Bretons. But I have all races, because you know, with ZoS you never know what race will be the next top model, I mean, race. lol. Honestly, though, unless you're score pushing play any race, it really does not matter. But like I said, with how this game operates, it's just a patch away when your race becomes the next best race. So really it does not matter. hahaha.
Am I right on the math that the Redguard 's stamina recovery ability is equivalent to roughly 400 stamina recovery in an optimal scenario (dealing damage exactly every 5 seconds)? (My math is 1005 every 5 seoncds multiplied by 2 to get 2010 every 10 seconds. Then divide that by 5 to get an amount for a tic every 2 seconds) It seems like a lot of people hate on Redguard dps but, but 400 stamina recovery seems like a heck of a lot to me... .seems like since you can glyph jewelry for either stamina recovery or +damage, you could swap in more damage glyphs and not lose the sustain, which would more than make up for the loss in damage wouldn't it?
It's definitely good, but worse than your analysis makes it out to be. They need a rework/buff. Consider the following: 1. You need to constantly be fighting to trigger that. There is an infinite amount of fights and bosses where there is downtime in between in which you're not triggering it where basic stamina regen would work better. Handy for pvp and tanks that are blocking though since regen doesn't work there. 2. Yes, in a fight where it's triggered every 5s it is equal to 402 Stam regen.. however, that is after Stam regen modifiers. Consider the 258 stam regen from Wood Elf as a comparison. Most classes have +10% or more. A Stam potion is 30%. 5 medium is 20%. So that 258 is actually 413. Now imagine minor endurance, more medium and a better class passive and it's going even further than 413, active 24/7 fighting or not, the only drawback is blocking or sprinting which as a DPS you should be doing very little of. 3. The weapon cost reduction passive gets less valuable the more and more skills we get at our disposal. Hybridization has effectively killed this passive since Stam toons can now use their Magicka class damage abilities, at most today, I use 1-2 weapon skills on average. 4. Stam regen enchants aren't necessary for 4-12 group content due to synergies, group buffs, food, and hybridization. As long as you fit 1-3 Magicka skills in your rotation, even as a non Red guard/Woodelf with or without regen food, a regen enchant isn't needed. There is CP for an extra 150+90 regen and 1500 Stam on kill as well to help non sustain races, without sacrificing any DPS since it's from the red CP isntead of blue.
Also I'm not saying to never pick Redguard, pick what you find fun and what works for you. Just explaining some of the drawbacks and why they deserve a buff in the games context today. If you're playing PVP more than PVE, then Redguard as with many other races becomes a lot closer to "best in slot" because PVP builds require a lot more build variety than PVE DPS where you push as much DPS as possible with enough sustain to do so (fairly easy in 2023). If sustain in ESO was in a worse state, then Redguard's would get a lot more value for PVE.
@MarshallTeixeira thank you for breaking it down for me so well. This is exactly the kind of answer I hoped to get. I'm fully aware that the difference is minor and that, ultimately, you can make redguard work. The math in this video shows a 3% difference in pure dps potential, and that's definitely not very big. Still, it's good to know exactly why that stamina regen isn't as good as it appears. You had multiple reasons, each of which is valid on its own.
also, for vampires, dark elf wood elf and kahjit are solid choice. vampires have a permanent weakness to fire, meaning being a dark elf can help when facing huge fire damage. vampires being great for stealthy gameplay, kahjit and wood elf can also be great choice, since they have a passive skill making them harder to detect (as a wood elf, once set up, i can be right in the face of mobs and they still won't detect me and same for other players, when i tested in duels). as werewolf, wood elf is THE best choice. werewolf are most of all used as stamina dps and wood elf are great for that. werewolf also have a weakness for poison (only when transformed). argonians also have such a resistance, but aren't as great when using stamina. plis, for werewolf to be as useful as possible it's best to be fast to be able to not waste too much time when going from one group of mobs to the next. orcs are great stamina dps are have a speed boost like wood elves, but contrary to wood elves, orcs don't have poison resistance. as a woodelf werewolf, i was able to solo veterean dungeons all by myself and was able to do it while being transformed from start to finish, thanks to the speed boost. bonus. when a runner in cyrodil, carrying scrolls, wood elves is also the best race. many are the players who died from fall damage while chasing me, as i jumped from cliffs. i walked as fast as their mounts were running. as long as i didn't stop, they could not catch up. the very few who weren't killed by my allies were killed by jumping from cliffs. meanwhile, i survived these same jumps. 🙂
I’ve been playing since the time they had veteran levels before the massive changes. My main class is a DD Argonian DK but have a feeling that no matter what setup I used I always fall short on my damage output. I aim to build my character around dealing massive direct and AoE fire dmg but I am struggling with the right sets or combos. I feel as if my character is bugged
Skinny Cheeks - "Ok so we're discussing if your race matters..." Me - [glances nervously] Skinny Cheeks - "in Elder Scrolls Online." WHEW! For a minute I thought this was going to be an ENTIRELY different video. :P
People on console will want you to be a dps race for every hm or trifecta prog to not nerf group damage I'm not even talking about score pushes which basically no one on ps does anyway So if I want to play race I enjoy I'd have to either not do endgame or find a guild which allows it which is very hard. On console it's much more strict with races than on pc where you kinda can bing chilling because there's lots of groups and people are mostly super chill I guess I wish zos would just buff weak races tbh, it's been a long time without any racial changes
@@skinnycheeks I recently changed my stam Arcanist to imperial (cause I can't stay away from this race apparently lol) and I used sugar skulls, I was also vampire stage 4 at the time and I didn't notice my stamina going down too much. It's almost scary how much worse Magicka Arcanist is with sustain in comparison. Will test more properly later, no idea what food I may need, but magicka was more of an issue with the stam Arcanist.
Race is mainly for role play and looks. Just pick the race you like and have a good story for your character and build around that. You may have to look at your character for 1000+ hours of gameplay so, better play a character you really like and feel good about. People doing score pushing will have to switch race, class and weapon skills to keep up with the ever changing meta anyway, just have alts ready with combat skills levelled in case you need them for the next patch.. 99,9% of players won't ever do score pushing though..
In your opinion. If I want to fill multiple roles on one character, dps, pvp and tanking without changing races should I go dark elf or imperial. Looking at arcanist and my dk.
Short Answer: Not really Long Answer: Not really, but if you want 1 less thing to think about in difficult content be Breton(Mag DPS/Healer), Redguard(Stam DPS), or Argonian(Tank), Long Answer 2: If you're a leaderboard chaser then yes, you want the exact class and race your team needs you to be to get that .03s faster time
It is true what people say, Race doesn't matter... until it does :) In the beginning and the mid game it isn't relevant. But once you reach the end of your characters journey, min-maxing your stats, you will wish you picked the optimal race, just to get those last few points for your build.
eh I've done plenty of trial trifectas with off-meta races, and even often out DPSd other people using the meta options...so I don't think it really matters unless you are trying to get top scores for content.
Every race seems op except Breton the one i like, Breton's need more, let their spell ressistance get tripled if burned or concussed then we'll call it even.
You can play any race mag or stam because your max damage is scaled off your highest resource in pvp you should put 90% of your attributes in health you should have 32k minimum your damage will scale off your max health
In pvp race is 30% of your build. In pve is less but can be even 100% Lots of raids refuse to take you if you are not a bis race, Cats are send home and gl with nord dps, Tbf first come the race, and then you build around it. |
WTF Y is a human a different race from a human? .this game has too many humans trying to pass of as different races r the devs running out of ideas? Y no dwarfs or long list of acutely different races?
Nah i disagree. I think it does matter. Youre not gonna play stam with a breton. Or Mag with a Wood Elf. The passives wont help you much. I mean you could, its not the end of the world in lower end content. But youre gimping your potential. whats the point if your class passives are not working? Might as well not slot them then. Even if the benefits arent huge, why not take what you can get to get the best performance possible?
*You* are not gonna play stam with a breton. I just might, if that is a character fantasy that appeals to me. As clearly shown in the actual video, the actual percentage difference between the top and bottom race for any particular scenario is not particularly relevant outside of score pushing runs, so "gimping your potential" does not matter to the vast majority of players in practice. Yes, it's an MMO, numbers are important if you're playing combat-focussed aspects of the game and there is no getting around that, but what you seem to forget is that not everyone lets numbers dictate how they play.
Thanks for watching! Let me know what your favorite race is in the Elder Scrolls Universe!

Game need to open the flood gates a little, spice it up
Miraak Nord Arcanist DPS for some RP and fun to use with ult Gen
I like the passives, they give some identity to the race in line with the elder scrolls lore.
Passives are good but they suuuck when you’re forced to follow a “meta” and can’t use the race you truly want if you play competitively.
Best Races in Short:
DPS = Dark Elf
Healer = Dark Elf (can swap to dps if you want)
Tank = Nord or Imperial.
Solo Content = Khajit
Overall doesn't matter much. Skill is 10000000× more important.
im trying to heal and tank on one class, what race should i pick then?
@kyiambeckwith9960
It won't make or break any clear. With that said I'd probably pick Imperial or Argonian.
The answer in any elder scrolls games is always Dunmer
Argonian master race. Argonian best.
Not sure how it is nowadays but when I actively played ESO most raid leaders dont understand this concept explained in the video and flat out refuses to take people with "unoptimal" race, especially for DPS... So while its true you can donit with any race, you are still at the mercy of the community.
I've heard some people say Argonians are actually detrimental for healing when min/maxing, what do they mean by that?
Your Dunmer name though-- "I Love Argonians I swear" hahahahaha. I wish they were your in game names as well. hahaha. My favorite is and will always be Bretons. But I have all races, because you know, with ZoS you never know what race will be the next top model, I mean, race. lol. Honestly, though, unless you're score pushing play any race, it really does not matter. But like I said, with how this game operates, it's just a patch away when your race becomes the next best race. So really it does not matter. hahaha.
i ALWAYS choose dark elf on my dps characters.
the fact i 100% hate argonians and khajiits also helps with this decision 👍🏼
Am I right on the math that the Redguard 's stamina recovery ability is equivalent to roughly 400 stamina recovery in an optimal scenario (dealing damage exactly every 5 seconds)?
(My math is 1005 every 5 seoncds multiplied by 2 to get 2010 every 10 seconds. Then divide that by 5 to get an amount for a tic every 2 seconds)
It seems like a lot of people hate on Redguard dps but, but 400 stamina recovery seems like a heck of a lot to me... .seems like since you can glyph jewelry for either stamina recovery or +damage, you could swap in more damage glyphs and not lose the sustain, which would more than make up for the loss in damage wouldn't it?
It's definitely good, but worse than your analysis makes it out to be. They need a rework/buff. Consider the following:
+ Argonian are the best looking and have the best story 😊
i use imperial with stam + stam regen food. since they got hp. i don't need hp on my foods.
To be honest I just want to play imperial for everything when I get bored of DPS healing or tank on same race class
I have an orc/dragonknight healer... its mostly for fun lol
Skinny Cheeks - "Ok so we're discussing if your race matters..."
Me - [glances nervously]
Skinny Cheeks - "in Elder Scrolls Online."
WHEW! For a minute I thought this was going to be an ENTIRELY different video. :P
All the sudden I want to make an Orc Necromancer
I play almost every magicka and stamina damage dealer but I feel comfortable to play magicka templar. dps are almost same guys.
Very very very helpfull tyvm
People often forget that if you don’t have resources your damage output is zero😉
People on console will want you to be a dps race for every hm or trifecta prog to not nerf group damage
I'm not even talking about score pushes which basically no one on ps does anyway
So if I want to play race I enjoy I'd have to either not do endgame or find a guild which allows it which is very hard. On console it's much more strict with races than on pc where you kinda can bing chilling because there's lots of groups and people are mostly super chill I guess
I wish zos would just buff weak races tbh, it's been a long time without any racial changes
Are you going too post the EU vs NA event ?
Imperial forever! Btw, wonder how much that 6% would fair against say... wood elf stamina per second. I suck at math :(
Can’t really directly compare. Depends how costly and how often you are casting stam skills and also how much boosting to stam recov your build has
@@skinnycheeks I recently changed my stam Arcanist to imperial (cause I can't stay away from this race apparently lol) and I used sugar skulls, I was also vampire stage 4 at the time and I didn't notice my stamina going down too much.
Really either one. Dark elf will take the edge on dps but the imperial will be a little better at tanking.
Yes
Not really my brother plays argonian dps I mean unless you want to hit absolute max stats then yeah but most don't care
matters to those who play competitive gaming
It matters not only in ESO, but in real life
Why doesn't ZOS give us back old argonian swim animation?
Races matter ALOT more in pvp than PVE
Nice.
Short Answer: Not really
Long Answer: Not really, but if you want 1 less thing to think about in difficult content be Breton(Mag DPS/Healer), Redguard(Stam DPS), or Argonian(Tank),
Long Answer 2: If you're a leaderboard chaser then yes, you want the exact class and race your team needs you to be to get that .03s faster time
It is true what people say, Race doesn't matter... until it does :) In the beginning and the mid game it isn't relevant. But once you reach the end of your characters journey, min-maxing your stats, you will wish you picked the optimal race, just to get those last few points for your build.
eh I've done plenty of trial trifectas with off-meta races, and even often out DPSd other people using the meta options...so I don't think it really matters unless you are trying to get top scores for content.
race will onl matter till zos make a race stronger thsan others = cash yes spelling mistake
Is it possible to get these class armor styles from character creator?
Yes, though I don’t remember which ones specifically they are. Might have to google it.
Every race seems op except Breton the one i like, Breton's need more, let their spell ressistance get tripled if burned or concussed then we'll call it even.
Arcanist solo stam build? Are Nords/Imperial fine then? :o
Yes
Does race mattah when picking a partnahh!
You can play any race mag or stam because your max damage is scaled off your highest resource in pvp you should put 90% of your attributes in health you should have 32k minimum your damage will scale off your max health
👍👍👍 Jep Jep!
But skinny now that wep and spell damage are equalized are the races that have both, like dark elf , literally getting twice as much as before?
no, cause it picks your higher of the 2, they don't add together
@@skinnycheeks ahh alright 👍 thanks
Unless you re going to be a die hard telvar pvper, theres not a big advantage between races.
Imperial only here
Bosmer power !!!!!! :-)
Yes if your not kahjit you are doing it wrong
Daaamn, i'm early
I like pickles
nice
In pvp race is 30% of your build. In pve is less but can be even 100% Lots of raids refuse to take you if you are not a bis race, Cats are send home and gl with nord dps, Tbf first come the race, and then you build around it. |
Damn racists!!
I think racial passives are simply sucks for the game, and they make little sense based on tes lore. Best you can do is 100% ignore them.
no
If your trying to optimize to the fullest yes it matters but otherwise no
Orc Lives Matter!!
imagine playing argonian lmao cant be me
WTF devs Y no race trees? go play DDO devs. races with like 4 shitty buffs sucks lame devs lame i hope the clases have more depth
Ahhh yes, time to get racist
does race matter? hmmm
Everybody in this game is either Redguard Or Breton. :(
They really need to reduce dark elfs racials they are so overtuned. Their stats should be like +1000 +1000
Nah. They have no other strengths. They wouldn’t have a good reason to pick them unless they added something else in exchange for that
WTF Y is a human a different race from a human? .this game has too many humans trying to pass of as different races r the devs running out of ideas?
Let me save you 22 minutes of your life - yes.
