  • The tail end of the Summer has seen me continuing my saltwater fly fishing adventures and I've definitely been catching more fish later in the season. Lately I've also been fortunate to meet and fish with some great fly anglers and attended the Orvis Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival which was an incredible event.
I'm not sure how likely it is that I will get out on the salt again before the season is out, with the mornings and evenings getting darker fishing time is getting more difficult to find. I will however be looking to do some fly fishing for pike over the Winter so watch this space!
Thanks for watching and tight lines!

Great video Dan. Looking forward to my first salt water fish on the fly. A mullet would be amazing and a bass even better. 👍🐟🐟

Thanks mate, I fish the Itchen Navigation quite a bit as it’s waking distance for me but not targeted pike there much, will have to give it a go 👍

Hi Dan. I grew up in Portsmouth. Ace seeing the places you're fishing. Ive just been getting interested in saltwater fly fishing. Looking to get out in the Menai Straits and around Anglesey for Bass and Mullet.
What fly lines would you reccomend? Im on a bidget but wasnt sure if I need a saltwater line. Also, what do you recommend in the way of floating, intermediate or sinking, and what type of leader? I have a 9ft #6 rod coming as my #4 nymphimg rod is a bit light!
    Thanks

It’s great having so much water to go at, there’s enough marks between Southampton and Hayling Island to keep me occupied for a lifetime 😄 I imagine Anglesey has plenty of interesting water.
For fly lines a floating line will work for 90% of bass situations and I only use floating for mullet. I do like an intermediate for fishing deeper marks for bass but I’d also recommend an 8wt rod if you want to go down that road. For now I’d stick with a floating line on the 6wt and you can throw small to medium size baitfish patterns, small gurglers and mullet flies happily.
You won’t need a specialist line and I would highly recommend the Airflo Forge (I’m not affiliated in any way), it’s a reasonable price, casts well and will last more than one season if you rinse it off regularly. If you want to spend less money the airflo velocity is about £20 and it’s what I have on my mullet setup and I have no complaints.
Leader wise, for Bass you can use 9ft of straight 10-15lb fluorocarbon for ease but for bigger flies I’d recommend a 15lb tapered leader to help turn them over. I also use a small lure clip sometimes to make changing flies easier. For mullet I use a 12 or 15lb tapered fluorocarbon leader, usually sold as bonefish leaders, I cut them down to about 9ft and tie on 3 or 4ft of 10lb fluoro tippet and my dropper goes on where my tippet connects to the leader too.
Bit of a bible answer 😄 but hope it helps and feel free to ask anything else 👍
      Cheers

Hi! Would you mind posting Paul (Limitless Loops) contact details - if he gives consent? Great vid. Looking forward to more as I embark on my own saltwater fly fishing adventure.

Great video, good to see you catching bass on "the fly". May I enquire as to the rods you are using?

Thanks very much 🙏 it’s a steep learning curve to locate them coming from freshwater fishing but I’m starting to put the pieces together slowly.
My rods I’ve built myself, my main bass rod is a 9ft 8wt with a fairly fast action. The other rod in the video is an 8ft 5wt fibreglass rod that I built for mullet, it did a great job of taming a thick lip which you can see in one of my other videos 👍
