Hey nice job and video.. I was thinking of swapping this into my 74 Toyota Corolla. Any way you could get me the dimensions of the engine ? i would appreciate it! Thanks
@@user-pd9vm9ts1o External dimensions on a motor like that really don't give you enough information to see if it fits. I'd classify this as a wide "big head" DOHC motor. You'll need at least 20" between the frame rails, 24" between the strut tower tops and 24" of height to fit it in. it's also 21" long but that dimension will definitely not give you a problem.
I am speechless. Very comprehensive initial video for an MR-2 SW20 2GR-FE build. You've covered everything up to the smallest details (what parts to shave off/grind when mating the engine with the trans, the bolts used, torque specs, common issues, etc.). This makes me confident to do it on my own! Now I just need an SW20 and the 2GR-FE. ;) Thank you very much!
Stumbled across your videos after watching some K-swap videos. I’ve always been more of a Mazda fan but I have a soft spot for the SW20. I still remember going for a spirited drive on a coastal (Australian) road years ago in my little turbo 4WD Ford Laser (same shell as the early 90s USDM Escort) and a SW20 easily kept up through the twisties. Nowadays my family car is actually 2GR-FE powered (Kluger/Highlander), this video makes me want to buy an SW20 and do the swap. I’ve always had a thing for small 6-cylinder powered cars, and the MR2 would be worthy of the effort at least, unlike KL swapping a 90s Mazda.
Thanks for watching my videos, i appreciate it. The 2GR really is a pretty fantastic motor and it makes the SW20 feel like a modern car. It's a perfect combination of big engine and little car.

I can't remember what video I saw where you are talking about upgrading the fuel pump, but you mentioned with the Aeromotive 50-1200 you may need to upgrade fuel return line size? I will be reinstalling the 5sfe, but want to just replace the fuel pump while the engine is out and prepare for a future engine swap. Can you advise on what exactly I should do to run the Aero pump with a 5sfe. Thanks!
I don't have specific instructions for that but you'll need to replace the return line to be big enough to handle the max flow of the pump. The quick and easy way to be sure is just to make it the same size as the feed line. Stock the feed line is 8mm and the return line is 6mm
So you said a 340hp beast. Is that just from the tune setup on the ecu you sale? Or did you mod the engine other than the bolt on from video? awesome though ill be waiting for more.
Matt, 340hp is the estimated flywheel horsepower, i haven't actually put it on an engine dyno but with my headers, tuned ECU, MAF pipe, Alex Wilhelm's y-pipe and a berk tail section it makes 290whp and Alex has actually been working on a few flow tweaks and he's even gotten it to 301whp. This is all with zero internal modifications, not even porting at this point though that's likely going to be necessary to push it much further in naturally aspirated trim.
@@mattpeebs32 Yeah, it really is. The only downside is this motor is an absolute screamer when you open it up. It sounds really good but not everyone wants to draw that much attention when they get on the loud pedal. @@FrankensteinMotorworks thanks so much for the reply, in the video you said this is the newer model e153. I got excited thought it was the version out of the v6 Camrys/Solara.

Also could just use a regular socket wrench but I can't find a female to female socket adapter! Am I being stupid and overlooking something?
I don't know the details of the Toyota Surf but the 2GR has the same bolt pattern as the 5VZ and has been mounted to the same transmissions with some clearancing to make the starter fit.
the bolt pattern is going to be very similar to the 5VZ so the truck transmissions that used that used the 5VZ may work. You will need to make sure you look carefully and consider the starter mounting.
This video has the previous version of my headers, the new ones are here. They flow a bit better and make about 5whp more: frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com/shop/2gr-fe-exhaust-header
Mostly just open up the exhaust but we run headers and a super short exhaust, a special MAF pipe with a velocity stack and an ECU calibration and the Venza upper intake manifold. Completely unopened engines.
Yes, you can mix and match parts with other e-series transmissions to get many other gear ratios and final drive ratios you want. There's also a few aftermarket gear and final drive options.
The 2GR-FE swap in the MR2 costs about $6000-7000 if you're doing it yourself. But that's if you're in the USA and i don't think you are so you'll have to make your shopping list and figure it out based on local parts availability.
You'd be surprised how often I get requests from the rav4 crowd. If I ever branch out from the MR2 crowd there's a good chance it'll be to the rav4 and/or the Avalon (yeah, I realize Avalon sounds odd but it's where all the requests come from). Meanwhile, if you want more power the answer is a custom y-pipe. the y-pipe on these stock applications are always awful and dramatically reduce available power.

Also could just use a regular socket wrench but I can't find a female to female socket adapter! Am I being stupid and overlooking something?
If you are careful to keep things aligned you can just use a crescent wrench.
@@FrankensteinMotorworks yea that was the last option I guess haha. Where'd you get yours to work with a socket wrench?
@@mushlove6933 i just used square drive sockets like these: amzn.to/3BgWCKA
@@FrankensteinMotorworks ohh yeah I always forget about 8 point sockets.. dang. I'll see if I have any. If not I'll order.. thanks marc!
What would I need to swap a 2gr into a1998 Toyota surf
I don't know the details of the Toyota Surf but the 2GR has the same bolt pattern as the 5VZ and has been mounted to the same transmissions with some clearancing to make the starter fit.
Hey bud whats a good toyota trans rear wheel drive ,that i caan use
the bolt pattern is going to be very similar to the 5VZ so the truck transmissions that used that used the 5VZ may work. You will need to make sure you look carefully and consider the starter mounting.
Where did you find the hoist brackets to lift the engine?
I just used a few pieces of scrap metal but if you want the official toyota parts, order 12281-31120 and 12282-31100
Is that Mr2 transmission the same used with the 2ZZFE
Unfortunately the 2zz's transmission is a completely different bolt pattern.
@@FrankensteinMotorworks so I guess I can't put this v6 on my celica
@@cesarortega6615 Correct, you would need to swap the transaxle also. The E series from a 2010 and earlier Scion tC would be a good fit for this.
Do you know if I can use a 3gr fse ? I have a Lexus gs300 with 2jz swap and I have the 3gr waiting for a car 😂👌👌 thanks
unfortunately not, the longitudinal versions of these engines are different than the transverse ones used for the swap.
@@FrankensteinMotorworks I think with some work in my workshop it can be done ✌🏻☺️
What are those headers from a toyota mr2?
This video has the previous version of my headers, the new ones are here. They flow a bit better and make about 5whp more: frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com/shop/2gr-fe-exhaust-header
Anybody have the model number or year for the latest Solara transmission??
The XV30 that ends in 2008 is the latest solara and it had a manual trans available until the end.
What's best oil in these motors ??
On the race track I use Klotz 5w20 and for the street I use Mobil1 0w20.
What do I need to install to a 2gr to get 340hp
Mostly just open up the exhaust but we run headers and a super short exhaust, a special MAF pipe with a velocity stack and an ECU calibration and the Venza upper intake manifold. Completely unopened engines.
Can you custom this box?
Yes, you can mix and match parts with other e-series transmissions to get many other gear ratios and final drive ratios you want. There's also a few aftermarket gear and final drive options.
And how much money will it cost?
The 2GR-FE swap in the MR2 costs about $6000-7000 if you're doing it yourself. But that's if you're in the USA and i don't think you are so you'll have to make your shopping list and figure it out based on local parts availability.
Yes, I already have a car, and I put this engine in this car. That's because I'm tired of changing machines. I want to put a mechanical box.
If I buy an e153 manual transmission, and it will ring a bell for me as well as you will with your alterations. I understand correctly.
You should 340hp my Rav4!
With the custom y pipe do you need a tune I assume?
@@Adam-di3mn No, the stock ECU tune is actually really good at compensating for those kinds of things.
im so confused what i just watched-
Hell no gotta have ac😅
